Strange is that I had this safe mode speech working with earlier versions of Win 10 and NVDA.

I don't recall if I ever saw anything definitive about this, but I've seen comments that this method only works with one brand of internal sound card.  It's a widely used brand, Realtech, but this may be the cause of the problem.  Does anyone know if it is definitely true about the limitation?

I had already installed the .reg file to activate sound in safe mode. I had also went to the boot part of msconfig and checked the two options you indicated and after hitting the OK button restarted windows and got into safe mode.  However after getting to the desktop and hitting enter on the NVDA icon and trying to use the NVDA shortcut key I got no speech.
Running latest Windows 10 and latest released version of NVDA.

If that was not tried, I suspect that revo or other will have somewhat burned the bridges here.
I allways look at the ad remove to see if its there, but sadly some apps simply contain no uninstaller.

You said you tried a third party uninstaller. You didn't say whether you had tried the Windows uninstaller. Try it and see what happens if you didn't.

Hi, everyone,

Can you recommend a good program for uninstalling the free youtube to
mp3 converter classic? I tried a program called special uninstaller but
that didn't help at all.

Thanks in advance.

Well, as its windows 10, use narrator to go to the thumb drive and open it,
go to the nvda folder and open it then find nvda.exe and run it. After that
you just need the nvda menu and tools etc as previously described. Of
course if you have UAC on you may get an invisible window for that as you
presumably have seen before. I'm assuming this is an admin account you are
installing into.

If I understand what you're talking about:

1. Login to your new profile.

2. Run NVDA from the USB drive.

3. Go to the NVDA menu, tools, and pick install, or whatever it's called. I
can't tell you because I'm running an installed copy. Install, tell it to
copy your addons or whatever you need.

4. You're done, enjoy NVDA.

Re: My computer still freezes about some time out of use

I'll try to follow these suggestions.
Well my log level is set as default since I haven't changed it.
I don't remember to have any copy of Firefox running at the moment, but I can't say it precisely.
Anyway thanks for the help :)
Em 01/07/2018 05:44, Brian's Mail list account via Groups.Io escreveu:

Well, I think you firstly need to reboot nvda with all add ons disabled, then launch firefox and work as usual. if things still do not work then, its a mystery, but here is a known issue that if you start nvda with a copy of firefox running some strange things can occur. You are using the release candidate here, I notice. this should not really matter but you may like to use the very latest nvda 2.1.1.

The best approach when you start to get weird errors is to only change one thing at a time. Keep it simple. Turn off any kind of extras like add onse and see if you have the problem if all goes well you can turn on  add ons one at a time.

Actually I tend to turn them off in the add on manager rather than keep on trying to use the reboot with add ons disabled as this does not allow you to find the culprit.
However if the problem persists, in the simple set up then something else is involved. This could be corruption in the settings saved or something odd elsewhere. its very hard to tell. most of the errors in the log you sent seem to be a problem identifying the screen content and navigating within the buffer as it seems Firefox is running at start up.
Try booting in Firefox after start up and see if that fixes things.
What have you got logging level set to? I use Debug when I need to figure out complex issues. There is I think an option on the exit menu to boot with debug level.

Well, as its windows 10, use narrator to go to the thumb drive and open it, go to the nvda folder and open it then find nvda.exe and run it. After that you just need the nvda menu and tools etc as previously described. Of course if you have UAC on you may get an invisible window for that as you presumably have seen before. I'm assuming this is an admin account you are installing into.

Re: trying to uninstall the free youtube to mpp3 converter classic

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Is it a 64 bit or 32 bit program?
Is it a real program or is it something within a browser as an add on. I'm not familiar with this software.
My feelings are that browsers can uninstall add ons but if its a 32 bit piece of software then good old old version revo is your friend, as it can uninstall almost anything. However for 64 bit programs, you need the bulk crap uninstaller which is actually more difficult to use.
This is of course assuming its got a real uninstaller somewhere.

Re: My computer still freezes about some time out of use

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Hi,

Layer commands: that is likely what will happen in the future. Three authors (I, Tyler Spivey, and Derek Riemer) wrote add-ons that use layer commands (I borrowed ideas from Tyler). Currently, the way you set up layer command structure requires understanding how gesture assignments work behind the scenes, but in the future, I’m hoping that we can make it way easier for authors to write layer command structures.

Cheers,

Joseph

There needs to be a way to have more commands such as in JAWS.  In JAWS, JAWS key space bar, as I recall, is the first part of layered commands, followed by a second command.  In NVdA, NVdA key space bar is used to toggle browse mode off and on so another first layer command is needed.  But it's clear from the discussion that we have reached the practical end of single commands.

Hi,
Sorry, NVDA+Shift+C is taken, too.
Whenever you define a command for a global plugin, it is applied everywhere. This means it'll override contextual commands such as when using applications, interacting with specific controls across applications, browse mode commands and what not. For this reason, whenever I assign commands to add-ons (or reassign existing commands), I look at all available commands (not just global plugins, but also app-specific and control-specific ones), thus I try my best to avoid commands that are used in specific situations.
Cheers,
Joseph

If it is a word specific key stroke, you could use it other places for other things. If not that one, how about NVDA+SHIFT+C etc?

Re: making the menus in libre office talk

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I can confirm that its not so much that the menus need the JRE, but the data base is created using Java by the looks of it. I've never had much luck with anything Java even going back to xp, so I tend to not use the Libra/open office database.
When you go to save a database as a new item in any of those programs, a little message pops up saying jre required to create this database, or similar. I have also encountered it locking up nvda or being unable to close after this due, no doubt to the confused state of windows at this point.
If anyone actually feels that databases created in Libra Office are workable even with JRE installed, then say so. I have to say I'm not impressed at accessibility in previous attempts, but most tend to stick to spreadsheets and word processors and maybe get some other software more amenable for databases.

That's probably right. My friend said she'd ask the lady in Texas.

It might be but I don't know for sure. I'll ask my friend when I talk to her again.

Hi, everyone,

I have a friend who just got a refurvished computer from Computers for
the Blind in Texas. She said they installed libre office on it but she
can't make the menus talk. Other than that, she said she can work with
the writer word processer and the spread sheet with no problem. Is there
a way to make the menus talk?

Thanks for your help in advance.

No, I have neither on my machine and they work. Indeed its a portable version so can be used on any machine java or not.

The menus in Libra Office writer do talk. The behaviour on the launcher is a little non standard it is true but it does talk
This screen appears blank, but you can make the drop down menu work in the normal way, if you choose not to select and escape, you can tab around some buttons on the main screen. I think this is merely a focus issue at launch.
I'm using the portable version of Libra here.
If its not working could they have installed some old version on the system?
It no longer seems to need Java.

I'm running on windows 7, which is often what these refurbished machines come with, at least in the UK.

Yes subject drift to wider discussion has occurred here. I too, thing that any kind of keyboard interactions need to be displayed in info easy to access on all add ons so one can decide whether to get an add on which conflicts and have to modify one or the or the or just avoid the add on.
I do not like the unassigned key idea as it can be quite annoying to redefine or define a key sequence only to find it gets in the way of something else. At least if they have a default you can use it by disabling the one the conflicts and then decide. Brian

I believe what was being requested though, was add-ons being able to
detect hotkey conflicts and notify the user. I definitely would love to
see this feature. It would have saved me some grief while
trouble-shooting why Clip Contents Designer suddenly stopped working. I
did need to update it, but evidently, which ever add-on gets updated
last takes over functionality. I first thought that NVDA upgrade broke
it, but, removing Golden Cursor resolved it permanently.

I've got several installed that have done this in the past, and the
Windows 10 App Essentials add-on did just that this morning.

I don't know what's involved in getting this functionality integrated
into a given add-on, as I don't write them, but Joseph Lee and several
others definitely do. There is no conflict between add-ons as far as
each having this self-monitoring feature.

Yes at the risk of generating hate mail, this is the one aspect of current Windows that has kept me on windows 7.
To have to be faced with a new windows every six months is really just a step too far for me at the moment.

Hi,

Not all add-on authors provide this functionality. I do know that at least four add-ons do provide this: StationPlaylist Studio and Windows 10 App Essentials from me, Braille Extender, and WeatherPlus. In case of Windows 10 App Essentials, it is necessary due to continuous delivery in place due to the fact that Windows 10 changes its interface and features constantly.

Cheers,

Joseph

Your call. I have no idea whether this would ever be made core functionality of NVDA or not, and given the history of add-ons in general, I think not.

No but is a hell of a distraction to keep getting alerts, then allowing them to find some subtle change has stopped you doing what you want to do!

I've never seen any add on prompt to say there is an update. I imagine that there is no way for older add ons to notify nvda of their version to trigger an update. Personally, I'd rather decide myself. At the moment you can get bamboozled into it and end up with a problem. Take Focus Highlight version 5 for example the debug logging code was left in making the resulting log of nvda very verbose with lots of pen colour lines in it. 5.1 fixed it and 5.2 seems more snappy than the previous one. I'm not sure if Joseph has updated this yet. I actually do not enable it unless I have a sighted person hee as if they are using it sightedly and turn off the sound they still get the pretty lines and this confuses the poor dears. Grin.

Again I'm finding they don't update by themselves using latest NVDA, thus I guess they're not compatible yet with the new AddOns updating feature? I restarted NVDA but no go. Should it ask me or let me know that an AddON update is available?
