Whynot connect the xbox to the network and stream the window to the computer via the xbox app. I’ve done ocr wiht nvda on that window and it works for what it does.

Use  a keyboard for narrator all the time. Read the help, but basically it’s capslock up and down to move through  the items words characters etc and narraotr left right to move through said items. Ther are other key strokes I dont’ know, things ot do with mouse mode and curser review but yeah I need to sit down and memmorise.

Hi,

In the future, is there any way that NVDA could be an app in the xbox one s app store? Then I could maybe use NVDA’s windows10 OCR feature to read game menus to more easily play games like madden nfl 2018 and others. Xbox one s runs on windows10.

One of the real advantages of having automatically save settings off is that you can experiment with different settings and never worry about accidentally saving them.  Or you can intentionally make changes intended only for one session and not forget and accidentally have them saved if you close the program or shut down the computer, which would shut down the program.  Users should be expected to learn certain basic things about the programs they use.  I consider it a real disservice to users to have automatically save settings set as the default.  There is such a thing as too much automation.

A user might set something like voice speed, or the voice to be used, or punctuation level, or who knows what manually and accidentally save something there was no intention of saving.

autosave is turned off some options like this one need to be staored or a
warning to the effect that it was not stored spoken?
I always leave  the auto store on as otherwise things get very confused.

Which version are you running. All people with the last stable were asked as I recall. Its nothing sinister, its just feedback to find out where things are being used, what synths and what browsers etc I think. It will aid prioritising features and fixes and also can be pointed to if nvaccess are looking for funding.
The European regulation is called the General Data Protection Regulation and it merely formalises the provisions in the data protection laws across the EU
It says everything that is or may be considered personal data has to be done as an opt in selection by the person whose data is being collected.
It should eventually mean all EU web sites cookies policies must come clean and not install them if you opt out of those cookie policy reminders you are seeing a lot of now. Of course world wide it really depends on who adopts similar legislation and as this is a thorny subject I'll stop it there!

Hello to NVDA developers on the list

I understand the need to get a user's permission to collect usage data,
but popping up that dialog at every start-up of NVDA is totally over the
top. Please please please don't do that. Please include a "Don't ask me
again" checkbox in the dialog and retain the option in General settings.
This is not something on which one would regularly change one's mind. It
is really annoying and irritating to have this dialog pop up with every
start-up. If you feel it is necessary, pop it up during installation and
during an update or provide the option not to be asked again.

You should not have an issue if you deal with the dialogue as normal.
I've been trying to duplicate this with both alpha and beta new branches but its not showing up more than the one time.
I'm certain it was in the last release in any case, and since the snap names are now different it should pop up once per branch but not after that.

It will only ask once if you have NVDA set to automatically save settings on exit. I did not have mine set that way and I didn't think of manually saving settings. That was why I got it every time around.

No it should not be. I don't think anything has changed from the old rc branch. However it might be some error that is caused by manual download being needed at the moment. I am not convinced its anything intentional. If it is an issue then it will be fixed as these are betas not releases after all. At the moment I've not been able to update master to beta in auto update form so its a bit early to say. What I'll do is go and look at the snap.

Like I said. those using snaps will see it now master is beta and next is alpha, but hopefully not again as long as nothing but the version of the snap changes.
I cannot test master yet as it fails to update as in the previous thread, but I see not reason why it should act any different to the old ones and I just agreed to it the once and it stood as agreed for ever.

Hi Christo
I am not a developer but a regular user and don't get such behaviour when using NVDA. The only thing I can think you are alluding to is the Welcome dialog box, which contains a check box entitled "Show Welcome Dialog At Start up", or something similar, which you should uncheck. I think the setting for this is stored in the NVDA.Ini file.

Cheers
Chris

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

It only asks me once here as long as its the samebranch or snap or whatever that is being run. If you are getting it all the time then something odd is going wrong. I've seen it when the new version came out and also on the new snap branches but that is all.

Re: nvda on xbox one s?

Josh Kennedy

well windows10 has its own built-in OCR. and xbox one s and xbox one x run on windows10. so maybe OCR is built into the system? if not, maybe in the meantime an iPhone or android phone with good cameras and an app could be used to OCR the screen of the game menus and other stuff?

Re: nvda on xbox one s?

Josh Kennedy

My son has both his xbox controller and a full computer keyboard plugged into his xbox one s. and they both work very good. so if nvda could be on there to OCR in-game-menus...

Re: A plea to NVDA developers

Hi,
You're welcome as always. When in doubt, manually saving settings is one way to really make sure NVDA remembers your preferences in the future.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hello Joseph

I gave the Save settings command and restarted NVDA and no more did the dialog bother me. Sorry, I should have thought of that myself. Many thanks for your helpful response. My only excuse is that we are having a terrifically cold winter and that my mind is frozen.

* Under Settings/General panel, is the last checkbox named "Allow the NVDA project to gather NVDA usage statistics" not checked?

Hi,
Correct: it is part of 2018.3 to comply with privacy regulations among other things. At the moment the best person who can give you a definitive answer is out of town for a few days, so don't take my answer as official.
