I do that from time to time. You clean out your chrome Hystery and data. I learned that when trying to study for my food save exam. The online instructor told me you have to clean your browsing hystery from time to time. I don’t know why but you do. Then it will run better.

I don't know what you read or where, but that isn't true.
I run it using 4GB of RAM, using Windows 7 and either it, or Google based browsers, and they run fine. I also have plenty of RAM to run what else I run. It may be that there are problems involving RAM. I don't know. There may be a memory leak, for example so using Google for long periods may cause it to use increasing amounts of RAM or maybe having a lot of tabs opened may use a lot of RAM, I don't know. But any browser requiring 8GB of RAM wouldn't be widely used..

In addition, it is generally stated that computers of today, running Windows 10 should have 8GB of RAM as the minimum, though you can use less.
\
I just checked. When I have Chrome opened and a web page loaded in one tab, my memory use, when few other programs are running is somewhere around 58 percent. If I close Chrome, it goes down to about 52 percent.

I honestly do not know.  I hope that someone else may.

That being said, there are many Chromium-based web browsers to choose from besides Google Chrome if that's the one you like and are used to.  Brave, Edge, and Vivaldi are but three, and there are others.  Consider giving one of the alternatives a go to see if it does not misbehave in the way that Chrome is.

Hi,

You can’t really turn off an add-on while using an app specific profile.

Louise,

I cannot find a tutorial that delves into this directly, but the NVDA User Manual States:  A configuration profile contains only those settings which are changed while the profile is being edited. Most settings can be changed in configuration profiles except for those in the General category of the NVDA Settings dialog, which apply to the entirety of NVDA.

Since Add-Ons manager is not a part of the General Settings category, I'd certainly just give it a try as far as creating a specific profile for the application, then disabling an add-on, saving the change, then hopping out of that application and back in again.  Try it with a single add-on as your "proof of concept" and if it does work then tweak the remainder.

As an aside, many Add-Ons do give you the ability to actually tweak their keyboard shortcuts, so if it's one you'd rather have all the time you could check to see if you can tweak the shortcut that conflicts with your application instead.

Hi.  Is it possible to create application-specific configuration profiles with certain add-ons disabled?  I have a couple of add-ons that have keystrokes that overwrite the application-specific keystrokes of some programs I use.

Thanks,

Well I didn't expect that! A reply from JSTOR arrived in the time that I was typing my message on this list! Although the solution is a tiny bit fiddly, the result is very acceptible.

This is what they told me:
Dear Giles,

Thank you very much for your message. We are always happy to provide you with screenreader-compatible copies of articles upon request and free of charge. You can email us at support@... or use the prompt that you hear on the article page to send us an automated request.

Alternately if you run out of JPASS downloads quickly as you download articles that do not feel relevant, we will replenish your downloads at no additional cost to you.

The article you requested today is attached to this message as a high-quality PDF. It is saved as the following file: 26779641.pdf

If you have any further questions, please feel free to get back in touch!

Kind regards,
EJ

* And I have downloaded the PDF file they attached and it is ordinary text, not a scan that needs running through OCR.

Reading JSTOR articles with NVDA

Giles Turnbull

Hi all,

as an author, I often need to research things for what I'm writing. In my sighted days I found JSTOR very useful and I'd like to use it again now. With a free personal account, it is possible to read up to 10 articles per month (100 at the moment thanks to an increased amount due to coronavirus).

The website is generally very accessible (there are a couple of "button" buttons, but that's the worst I've noticed).

I used advanced Search to find articles relating to the Irish town of Lisdoonvarna, which appears in what I'm writing at the moment. In the results was an article from the September 2016 issue of The Poetry Ireland Review. On that article's page I can find the text viewer frame, but the text appearing in that frame does not appear to be accessible with NVDA. I don't know whether you'll be able to find anything on this page unless you have a JSTOR account (free or institutional) but this is the link: https://www.jstor.org/stable/26779641

I have actually just purchased an annual subscription to the JPASS, which lets me download 120 PDF versions of articles per year, because I know I'll use that and I know I'll be able to read the text whether it's accessible text or in need of running through OCR. I just wondered whether anybody else has used JSTOR and found a way to read the text without needing to download the PDFs ... I don't want to download a PDF in order to find out whether there is anything in the PDF that is relevant to what I'm interested in!

The JSTOR Accessibility Policy page, https://about.jstor.org/accessibility/ says that their website is accessible to screen readers like NVDA and JAWS, but it doesn't say anything about the text viewer application. I have just emailed their support services for advice, but thought I'd ask here as well :)

Thank you,

Giles

If you go to https://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ you’ll find books covering how to use NVDA, and using it with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Hope this helps.

Spin-off of Topic: fields don't read when creating a distribution list in winword

Hi, as you are talking about Spreadsheets, can you give me a brief description on how to creat them and use other features, or failing that do you know of a spreadsheet or Excel Tutorial please? Do you use Access and if so can you shed any light on using databases, etc. I am totally blind, use digital hearing aids in both ears and am a wheelchair user and live on my own although I do have two carers and others who voluntarily help me but none of them use the programmes I relate to, so hoping you or someone else on this list may be able to help or know of someone who can.

Yeah I just created the spreadsheet by hand. It was easy enough to do, then connected the list. I didn't send the messages, but let me let you know, they will be in your outbox and they will send. One day maybe those fields will read, it's too bad they will not.

Blessings.

Are there any extensions for LibreOffice?

Richard B. McDonald

Hi!

I am using Windows 10, NVDA 2020.4 and LibreOffice 7.2.  Are there any extensions for NVDA that improve its accessibility with LibreOffice?  In particular, LibreOffice has a spreadsheet application, Calc, that has some material accessibility issues.

Thanks,

Richard

Re: Excel: Stop Saying "Formula Bar"

Well, Here's the odd thing. I have the "edit directly in sells" unchecked and mine still says the "formula bar" prompt. I’m not in a formula bar. I'm entering in emails in this case. Is there anything else I can check to see in my case what is going on and when the edit direct in cells check box is not checked? It still happens with all add ons disabled and when I run the com reg tool.

I'll google on how to do this. I read an article on Microsoft's help page but I was even more confused. It's a shame those fields will never be able to read. And when I try and use outlook I get "no tables found" even though I have over 900 contacts in there. Oh well. I'll investigate this further.
