Odd that it's just the menus. Is this a situation where Java RTE and Access bridge are required to obtain access to the menus?

Hi, everyone,

I have a friend who just got a refurvished computer from Computers for
the Blind in Texas. She said they installed libre office on it but she
can't make the menus talk. Other than that, she said she can work with
the writer word processer and the spread sheet with no problem. Is there
a way to make the menus talk?

Thanks for your help in advance.

The menus in Libra Office writer do talk. The behaviour on the launcher is a little non standard it is true but it does talk
This screen appears blank, but you can make the drop down menu work in the normal way, if you choose not to select and escape, you can tab around some buttons on the main screen. I think this is merely a focus issue at launch.
I'm using the portable version of Libra here.
If its not working could they have installed some old version on the system?
It no longer seems to need Java.

I'm running on windows 7, which is often what these refurbished machines come with, at least in the UK.

Yes subject drift to wider discussion has occurred here. I too, thing that any kind of keyboard interactions need to be displayed in info easy to access on all add ons so one can decide whether to get an add on which conflicts and have to modify one or the or the or just avoid the add on.
I do not like the unassigned key idea as it can be quite annoying to redefine or define a key sequence only to find it gets in the way of something else. At least if they have a default you can use it by disabling the one the conflicts and then decide. Brian

I believe what was being requested though, was add-ons being able to
detect hotkey conflicts and notify the user. I definitely would love to
see this feature. It would have saved me some grief while
trouble-shooting why Clip Contents Designer suddenly stopped working. I
did need to update it, but evidently, which ever add-on gets updated
last takes over functionality. I first thought that NVDA upgrade broke
it, but, removing Golden Cursor resolved it permanently.

each having this self-monitoring feature.

Hi,

Not all add-on authors provide this functionality. I do know that at least four add-ons do provide this: StationPlaylist Studio and Windows 10 App Essentials from me, Braille Extender, and WeatherPlus. In case of Windows 10 App Essentials, it is necessary due to continuous delivery in place due to the fact that Windows 10 changes its interface and features constantly.

I've never seen any add on prompt to say there is an update. I imagine that there is no way for older add ons to notify nvda of their version to trigger an update. Personally, I'd rather decide myself. At the moment you can get bamboozled into it and end up with a problem. Take Focus Highlight version 5 for example the debug logging code was left in making the resulting log of nvda very verbose with lots of pen colour lines in it. 5.1 fixed it and 5.2 seems more snappy than the previous one. I'm not sure if Joseph has updated this yet. I actually do not enable it unless I have a sighted person hee as if they are using it sightedly and turn off the sound they still get the pretty lines and this confuses the poor dears. Grin.

Re: Golden Cursor: Revisited

Hi,

Layer commands: that is likely what will happen in the future. Three authors (I, Tyler Spivey, and Derek Riemer) wrote add-ons that use layer commands (I borrowed ideas from Tyler). Currently, the way you set up layer command structure requires understanding how gesture assignments work behind the scenes, but in the future, I’m hoping that we can make it way easier for authors to write layer command structures.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,
Sorry, NVDA+Shift+C is taken, too.
Whenever you define a command for a global plugin, it is applied everywhere. This means it'll override contextual commands such as when using applications, interacting with specific controls across applications, browse mode commands and what not. For this reason, whenever I assign commands to add-ons (or reassign existing commands), I look at all available commands (not just global plugins, but also app-specific and control-specific ones), thus I try my best to avoid commands that are used in specific situations.

Re: Windows 10 App Essentials 18.07.1 #addonrelease

Hi,

Right, and my apologies for not making this clear…

ARIA specifications state that, when an alert should be presented to web browsers/screen reader combinations, browsers should present (fire) appropriate alert event. In case of Microsoft Edge, it fires live region changed event, which causes screen readers such as NVDA to announce whatever text is presented to them.

A few days ago, I was chatting with someone on Twitter who pointed out that this does not happen with Edge+NVDA. A debugging session revealed that this was caused by the fact that the actual element that fires this alert event has no text at all, but its child elements do contain fragments of text to be announced. I then wrote a fix for it and presented a try build of my add-on to this person, who came back and said NVDA will now announce ARIA alerts on Edge. However, because I know that Edge elements are used in other apps, I expanded my fix to cover other cases.

I’ll include the above notes in an upcoming revision of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on internals article.

Cheers,

Joseph

If I understand what you're talking about:

1. Login to your new profile.

2. Run NVDA from the USB drive.

3. Go to the NVDA menu, tools, and pick install, or whatever it's
called. I can't tell you because I'm running an installed copy. Install,
tell it to copy your addons or whatever you need.

4. You're done, enjoy NVDA.

If it is a word specific key stroke, you could use it other places for other things. If not that one, how about NVDA+SHIFT+C etc?

Hi,

Could the Golden Cursor key strokes be reassigned to ALT+NVDA+C, etc?
Are there already add-ons that use this model?
