Read Metadata in Switched Language

Rechell Schwartz <rechell_schwartz@...>

Hello,

When I have the screen reader read Spanish content with the eSpeak profile,

although it is reading the screen text properly, it is saying the metadata in English (e.g. “visited link”)

in English. Is there any way to configure so that even the metadata is read in Spanish?

Thanks,

Hello all,

Sorry for the O.T., but I think this may interest many of us not living in the U.S..

I got my access last night, and am about to try this out.
It's a great opportunity for us blind, visually impaired, and people with other print disabilities to access a world of books.

Ciao, enoy!

Low Vision? Disability? 1.8 Million digital books free, now Worldwide

<http://blog.archive.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Raphael-cropped2.jpg>

You can take action now to expand access to 1.8million books worldwide.

Individuals can qualify now
<https://archive.org/details/printdisabled&tab=about> to access 1.8
million digitized books, free.   Internet Archive has recently expanded
its program
<http://blog.archive.org/2018/10/11/internet-archive-expands-access-to-millions-of-books-for-people-with-disabilities/>

for those with low vision and disabilities.

Libraries, hospitals, schools, other orgs (worldwide!): can now sign up
to authorize users
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfClhUkTvF5z29hhxoi5UgaB1_50lr8F7HV5Cq0ABdztX9CkA/viewform>,

as well as get digital files for further remediation for qualifying users.

Publishers, please contribute your books
<mailto:info@archive.org <mailto:info@archive.org>?subject=I%20have%20ebooks%20for%20the%20disabled>
for this program!

Service organizations, please host your digital books
<mailto:info@archive.org <mailto:info@archive.org>?subject=I%20have%20ebooks%20for%20the%20disabled>
on archive.org <http://archive.org> to make seamless access to all books. Free.

Press: please help get the word out, let us know how we can help
<mailto:info@archive.org <mailto:info@archive.org>>.

Donations needed <https://archive.org/donate/> to get 4 million more
books. Donate books or money (about $20 per book).

Now available for access by anyone with disabilities worldwide… or for
anyone to contribute books for people with disabilities: both helped by
the US recently adopting the Marrakesh Treaty
<http://www.wipo.int/treaties/en/ip/marrakesh/summary_marrakesh.html>.

<http://www.worldblindunion.org/English/our-work/our-priorities/Pages/right-2-read-campaign.aspx>

Now is our time to bring together a great library for those with
disabilities.

Together we can.

Hi!
I use the Mail app all the time, and I definitely have the messages show in
conversation view. You can delete a whole group of messages at one press of
the delete key.
You have to press the left arrow a couple of times before you read the next
message.
The mail app opens the conversation by itself, so you have to press the left
arrow a couple of times really quickly and press delete very quickly if you
want to delete that entire conversation of messages.
I use NVDA with character typing, so I am not sure about word echo.
Sometimes, to read a message, you have to enter on the message, then shift
tab, and tab back to the message, press left arrow a couple of times to
close the conversation, and press enter two or three times quickly to open
the message.
The Mail app s not going to give you the same result all of the time.
You have to get creative and find work arounds as you go to get the most out
of it.
You can press the applications key or shift+F10 on a folder, and get many
choices like:
Create a sub folder, add the folder to your favorites, and more.
You cannot make rules in the mail app itself.
You have to create the rules on the web site, and they will import into the
mail app.
Good luck, and ask anymore questions!

Re: Games for the blind

Hello,
Assuming you're already familiar to the concept of the blind gaming, I'll just write about the suggestion. If it's not the case let me know and I'll do my best trying to help you from the beginning.

Some "old but gold" games include:
Dark destroyer - You have to kill the alien ships before them come to earth.
Last Crusade - A traditional RPG where you have to face many enemies in 3 different stages.
Top Speed - Car racing game
3d Snake - The traditional Snake game from the old cellphones
Duckblaster - You have to hunt and fire against ducks
Light Locater - You're an agent trying to disarm a bomb in a building with many floors.
Pigeon Panic - You have to fire against pigeons.
Super Egg Hunt - You have to collect eggs as much as you can.
Tarzan Jr - Well, I don't know how to explain this game since it's about various gaming styles in a single game, so I'll just say you give it a try.

P.S.: I don't know if it's on the topic of the list so you can write me privately if you want.

Cheers,
Marcio

Subject: [nvda] Introducing Add-on Updater 18.10 stable release #AddonRelease

Hi NVDA community,

A few months ago I announced a prototype of a feature under development, packaged up as a proof of concept add-on. I'm delighted to announce that, starting this very moment, everyone using recent NVDA releases can enjoy this feature: ability to check for, download, and update add-ons with Add-on Updater 18.10 stable version!

A few things to note:

a.. Even though this is now a stable add-on, Add-on Updater is still tagged as proof of concept. Once add-on updating comes to NVDA itself, Add-on Updater will be discontinued.
b.. Not all add-ons you've got will be updated. At the moment only the add-ons listed on community add-ons website (addons.nvda-project.org), along with Remote Support add-on will be subject to update checks by Add-on Updater.
c.. You can ask NVDA to never check for add-on updates on per-add-on basis, as well as ask NVDA to look for development snapshots.
d.. If you disable any add-on, Add-on Updater won't check for updates for these add-ons. If you happen to disable Add-on Updater, you won't be able to check for add-on updates via NVDA. There are several add-ons that does come with their own standalone update check facility, and if Add-on Updater is turned off, these standalone update check features will kick in (unless you turn this off from add-ons themselves).

Requirements:

a.. NVDA 2018.2 or later
b.. Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or later

Add-on page:

https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/addonUpdater.en.html

Source code:

https://github.com/josephsl/addonupdater

For people wishing to provide pull requests: feel free to provide pull requests for issues except: requesting update checks for add-ons not hosted on community add-ons site. If you do ask for that in your pull request (or as a new issue for this add-on), especially adding packages from a certain website (yes, I'm sure you know the site I'm talking about), I'll close them without comment. This restriction is mostly for quality control.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hello,
It'd be due an add-on called Speech Output Copier. Try disabling this add-on at the add-on manager which is located in tools' menu, or just doing a test, try to activate NVDA sleep mode, press the key, then turn the mode off and see what happens.

Re: nvda and google docs sheets and slides

Hi Sally!

I use Google Docs a lot with NVDA in Google Chrome.

The command you spoke of helps a lot in Google apps.

When you press NVDA+SHIFT+Spacebar, the editing functions work so much better.

Also, the commands for spell checking work great!

To get the correct formatting, though, I find that I have to press the Google command to hear formatting. That is:

Holding the alt and control, and pressing A, then F.

That gives better results than pressing NVDA+F to get formatting details.

Great to talk to you Sally. I am working on tutorials on using Google apps with NVDA and Chrome.

I've historically had pretty good luck using docs and sheets with chrome and chromevox but admittedly do not rely on them. I haven't memorized many of the hotkeys since chromevox next came out because the documentation I found didn't seem to keep up with the new keymap and although I have Chrome and Chromevox on windows and Mac too, I usually default to MS office, pages, or numbers when on those machines.

Sunday, I found that some websites are working best with Chrome and NVDA instead of Firefox and NVDA or Chrome and ChromeVox. I will be playing with the hrome and NVDA combination now.

Is it possible that the NVDA+shift+space hotkey to deactivate single letter navigation will help improve docs and sheets functionality?

Last night, I debued a new Laptop with Windows10, and am using its Mail app. HOwever I?d like to see what settings you’drecommend to get the best working experience? Firstly let’s say I?reading Emails a thread, and when the thread ends, it seems to put me out of the Email bodies, with the button that in Spanish, atlesat, it says something about Navigation expended, orNavigation contracted.I’d like for the Mail program, like it has donewith allthe Mail programs I’ve used over the yearsI’ve been using Windows, to until I’mdone Reading all the Emails, it’ll take out of the theirbodies. My method is to first delete all the ones that don’t seeminteresting, and only readthe apparently interesting ones. Can this be done? And lastly the most frustratingexperience I’m having with the Windows10Mail app is that NVDA doesn’tread the words upon spacing! Yes I’veactivated and deactivated the option of NVDA+3, with nodifference! So what tips/tricks do you guys recommend to get the most out of Windows10’s Mail app?

Subject: [nvda] Introducing Add-on Updater 18.10 stable release #AddonRelease

Hi NVDA community,

A few months ago I announced a prototype of a feature under development, packaged up as a proof of concept add-on. I’m delighted to announce that, starting this very moment, everyone using recent NVDA releases can enjoy this feature: ability to check for, download, and update add-ons with Add-on Updater 18.10 stable version!

A few things to note:

  • Even though this is now a stable add-on, Add-on Updater is still tagged as proof of concept. Once add-on updating comes to NVDA itself, Add-on Updater will be discontinued.
  • Not all add-ons you’ve got will be updated. At the moment only the add-ons listed on community add-ons website (addons.nvda-project.org), along with Remote Support add-on will be subject to update checks by Add-on Updater.
  • You can ask NVDA to never check for add-on updates on per-add-on basis, as well as ask NVDA to look for development snapshots.
  • If you disable any add-on, Add-on Updater won’t check for updates for these add-ons. If you happen to disable Add-on Updater, you won’t be able to check for add-on updates via NVDA. There are several add-ons that does come with their own standalone update check facility, and if Add-on Updater is turned off, these standalone update check features will kick in (unless you turn this off from add-ons themselves).

Requirements:

  • NVDA 2018.2 or later
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or later

Add-on page:

https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/addonUpdater.en.html

Source code:

https://github.com/josephsl/addonupdater

For people wishing to provide pull requests: feel free to provide pull requests for issues except: requesting update checks for add-ons not hosted on community add-ons site. If you do ask for that in your pull request (or as a new issue for this add-on), especially adding packages from a certain website (yes, I’m sure you know the site I’m talking about), I’ll close them without comment. This restriction is mostly for quality control.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

Does anyone know if Pastel works with NVDA, as it is a popular fincial accounting application in South African businesses?

Thank you.

Re: nvda and google docs sheets and slides

Sally Kiebdaj

Cheers,
Sally

Well, since they are not going to support chromevox for a while (they are putting that in chrome os only now) I woudl hope they fix the issues most of us are having on the native mac invironment.

My problem is I've read the documentation and none of the keyboard short cuts work for mac os and google chrome. I reported this about 2-4 years ago but still have had no luck. It is still as inaccessible as ever, and forget about google forms. Those are inaccessible to create. I should know, I tried, about 3 months ago.

Hello all,

I use Google Docs and Sheets both with Firefox and Chrome and NVDA without any difficulties.

I had some language issues in Chrome, that I reported to the Google Diasability accessibility team, and it was corrected with Chrome's last version.

I also could not, not on chrome, firefox, safari, or edge. And this over 2 years of trying. I talked to the google srep that was at one of our conventions in 2014 and all I got were a horable pair of free headphones and a "we'll look into it."

Hi,

What wweb browser works best with google docs sheets and slides? Freedom scientific said to use firefox, but that document came out 3 or so years ago, so it may be a little outdated. NVDA and chrome seem to work good with google office, now. Or is the latest firefox still best?

Re: Sluggish browse mode keystrokes in Google Chrome

Ditto. I had been turning off browse mode entirely. This is much nicer.
Thanks!

I didn't notice whether anyone had mentioned this, but since it's something not everyone knows about, for the benefit of anyone reading who wonders how GMail's (or any site's) built-in keystrokes work with NVDA's single letter navigation (eg H for heading, E for edit box, etc), the way to do it is to disable NVDA's single letter navigation.  To do this, press NVDA+SHIFT+SPACEBAR to toggle NVDA's single letter navigation.

I know that your example of Gmail was just an example, but I generally find that the built-in keystorkes that Gmail provides are significantly faster to navigate mail with than using the screen reader functionality.

Essentially, one can open a thread with "o" close a thread with "u", browse through the list of threads with "j" and "k" and navigate individual messages in a thread with "n" and "p".

Of course they also have keystrokes for replying, forwarding, deleting, archiving, and ignore thread.

Take care,

Jonathan

    Hi all

I have been noticing lately that many browse mode shortcuts are
sluggish in Google Chrome, especially on large web pages. Let me try
to explain what I mean with an example.

Suppose I open a large email thread (say 20 replies) in gmail in
Google Chrome. If I press H and then K, my cursor is supposed to find
the next heading, and then find the next link after that heading and
stop there. However, if I press them quickly one after the other, then
the after finding that link the cursor would jump back to the previous
heading as if I had pressed Shift+H afterwards. In other words, the
cursor would frirst find the heading, then jump to the next link, and
then it would mysteriously jump back to that heading again, all within
a short time, like within a second. I mentioned H and K just an
example - it seems that this issue can be reproduced with almost any
two browse mode commands, such as F, E, G, and so on.

Has anyone been aware of this issue? Are there any known workarounds?
One obvious workaround is for me to wait  after every single browse
mode keystroke, but that would make using Chrome too anoying - I would
have to wait for about a second after pressing any browse mode
    keystroke.

Actually I could reproduce this issue on the other browsers too -
Firefox and IE, although on a much lesser scale. In both Firefox and
IE you need to press these keystroeks really quickly together (maybe
less than 0.1 seconds apart to reproduce it, which  probably wouldn't
affect anyone. This bug is only bothersome in Chrome.

I'm using the latest NVDA 2018.3.2 and the latest Windows 10. I have a
modern laptop, so this is not an issue of running out of CPU or
memory. I don't have too many tabs open and I don't have other
    programs running.

    Best regards
    Tony
