Re: NVDA links and buttons on websites

Laughing Thunder

Short of having NVDA route the mouse pointer to the inaccessible item, and clicking the mouse, no. It has to do with the way the website is coded. These things happen when websites are not coded properly to support screen readers. I see this all the time.

Minor thing — NVDA and Windows Hello

Luke Robinett

My work laptop is running Windows 10 Pro and has Windows Hello enabled for face recognition at the logon screen. There are three messages spoken aloud as the system attempts to authenticate you: ”looking for you,” ”making sure it’s you” and ”hello (username).” NVDA repeats each of these three phrases exactly 3 times. Not a big deal and certainly doesn’t impede functionality, but obviously a bug so I thought I would share.

Can any of these "certain websites" be shared?  It's far better to have an example to work with whenever possible.

NVDA has problems with Braille in Excel and Windows Mail App

Cristina Ebetiuc

Hello all!

I have two Problems.

1. For some weeks I can't navigate by the Routing-keys when being in edit mode of a cell. I have tried to activate or deactivate the direct editing of cells in the advanced Settings. It doesn’t work. How can I correct this Problem?

2. Since yesterday I can*t read the Content in the Windows Mail App on the Braille line. It either says Nothing or it Shows mail or notifications which I get. I don't believe if that could be the problem.  But could this be because I reinstalled Office yesterday?  Ah and the reinstalling of Office doesn’t solve the Problem in Excel.

My System:

Windows 10 the May update I think, Office 2016, NVDA latest Version, Windows-Apps-essentials latest Version, Braille extender latest Version.

Thank you in Advance for the help.

Greetings
😊

Hettie, at times you might need to use the NvDA key + numpad /, to route mouse cursor to current position, followed by just the numpad / to then click the mouse button, or else, try the NVDA key + numpad enter key combo to perform default action?

And, sometimes you might need to actually use the tab key to land on a control and just hit the primary enter key to activate it - really depends on what the specific site is doing that is interfering with interaction.

Re: McAfee Antivirus does not work with NVDA

Gene

That's not surprising. Increasing numbers of antivirus programs don't work with screen-readers. It may work with JAWS; you might want to try JAWS to see but I'm far from optimistic.

If you are using Windows 10, Windows Defender is highly rated and well thought of. If Malware Bytes is still accessible, you may want to use that as well.

It looks as though the new McAffee antivirus doesn't work with N'Vda.
It simply says: "Chrome: Cannot read old Chrome."

Re: NVDA links and buttons on websites

Another way that may work is to move the mouse to the control and clicking it. If the person is using the desktop layout, do the following:
Be on the control.
Issue the command numpad enter numpad star. That is, hold numpad enter, then press star.
That moves the mouse to the control.
Click the mouse using just the star key.
So the seaquence is num;pad insert num;pad star, then star.

If that doesn't work, be on the control, turn off Browse Mode, then press the space bar on the button. If it’s a link, try enter.

Also, some links may not work unless you move beyond the first letter of it. While in browse mode, right arrow once past the first letter, then try enter.

The website may be refreshing, but may not be alerting him to the fact that changes have occurred. Otherwise he could try focussing the review cursor on the button or link (Section 5.5 of the NVDA user guide), and either left clicking, or activating the current navigator object.

Activate current navigator object
Desktop: NVDA+numpadEnter
Laptop: NVDA+enter

Left mouse button click
Desktop: numpadDivide
Laptop: NVDA+[

Re: A possible problem with the beta

Gene

I noticed the problem with a version that was older than the current version of betas but I didn't pay much attention to it because I use a much older version of NVDA usually. It does everything I want and its just easier to keep using it. But the recent nonbeta version I noticed this problem on has the same problem. I haven't tried announce cap for capital letters. I'll try it but I'm sure it will work.

Just checking Gene, the subject says possible problem with the beta, but in the message you say it's been an issue in recent versions - Is something different in the Beta? Does it recognise if you use one of the other options to report capitals (say cap or beep)? And can you otherwise change the pitch of the voice?

The last SAPI 4 issue I recall being involved in was this one: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/8400 interestingly also about pitch - there was a problem if you set pitch to 100% (because in rounding it ended up trying to set it to 101% from memory, which was out of range). Actually, I never did get confirmation from the original user whether that issue was still present - so if you are interested, if you could check that issue out as well that would help too please.

Kind regards

Quentin.

The capital pitch change doesn't work. I've verified this by trying many
pitch settings. Is this a more general problem or does it only affect MSAPI
4 or MSAPI4 when used with Via Voice? Which is another way of asking if the
problem is so limited it may not be worth addressing or if it’s a more
general one.

I've noticed this in recent versions of NVDA. I wonder if it is related to
the change in Python.

Hi Afik,

When you press the arrow keys on your QBraille, does it emulate cursor movement? Have you enabled hybrid mode?

Do you still have a Braille connection to NVDA? Does the same behaviour occur if you restart NVDA with addons disabled?

Thanks

Sam

office 2019 word and nvda

Hi.

I have not got a log for this but it happens every time I open office 2019 and then after closing it.

Nvda will stop responding for 10 seconds like look as if it just died but will eventually come back.

After that, nvda will not read the search box in windows properly in the start menu till I restart nvda.

I am not an office user though just an admin for a few systems with it.

Its happened on a couple systems and now another user on another list I am on reports this.

So I think it can be reproduced.

I have yet to look for a log, but since its happened on 3 other occasions I thought I'd ask here and see if someone else can confirm it for me and either get me to report it or set the ticket.

Re: NVDA Highlighter Window

Quentin Christensen

If it happens to come back and you happen to have NVDA set to record logs at Debug level, I'd be interested in a copy of the log.  It's not the desired behaviour (normally focus highlight doesn't require its own window), so if it does happen in a particular situation (and even better if we can narrow down what causes it) we can investigate.

Regards

Quentin.

If you have it set to highlight the focus, or browse mode cursors visually, that’s what this is. If you turn those off in the visuals category of the Settings dialogue, the window will go away. Otherwise, just ignore it as it’s related to the focus highlighting.

Windows 10 App Essentials: 20.07.2 is on its way, 20.08 to require NVDA 2020.1 or later #addonrelease

Hi all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 20.07.2 is on its way – I expect it’ll go live later today. This release includes latest translations and Open With dialog fix that was originally sent to version 2004 users will now show up for folks using Version 1909.

IMPORTANT: version 20.07.2 is the last version to support NVDA 2019.3. The next release (20.08) will require NVDA 2020.1 or later due to add-on support policy (Windows 10 App Essentials supports current, immediate past, and development versions of NVDA; by August 2020, this set will consist of 2020.1 (immediate past), 2020.2 stable (current), and NVDA development snapshots).

Cheers,
