Oh right, thanks, when I tried it initially, it said not compatible on this platform or something similar but that was before lots and lots of Windows updates, it is a new build.

Re: new member with tons of question on NVDA.
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
Well you download as you did before. However what synth you get depends on your operating system. if you are running windows 10, you should find that the windows voices are used by default. If you are running 8 or 7, then its still espeak but it often is that people never actually try the voice variants in Espeak. The current default is a very rough compromise selection that works for most languages, but if you go to voice not only can you change the language but in English you can also change the accent and indeed the voices completely. As I've said here before, the current default is headache inducing on, say a laptop, I designed Quincy voice for this precise reason. Now it could be of course that after trying all sorts of voices you still have issues. On the nvaccess web site the here are details of many synths. Many are not free, no, not even eloquence. jaws tends to default to this but under the terms of their licence they have blocked its used by other programs, including nvda.

you can buy it though from at least two vendors. I'll let fans of this voice explain as personally I cannot stand it. Each to their own and its a very personal preference. there is no one size fits all with speech voices. Brian bglists@blueyonder.co.uk Sent via blueyonder. Are they not based on the same system? Might be worth putting up with one of the many Espeak voices long enough to see if the same problems happen there or not.

I had the same issue with my bluetooth headset and NVDA not talking in the headset but in the speaker. To solve the problem, go to nvda settings, chose the speech tab, synthesiser, chosse change, and tab to "output device". Choose the one that is accurate, then ok, and it should work. I have never been aware of this output device before, but since I changed it, this works. Best Sylvie

Hi, Jim,
What I do to download something is to save it to my downloads folder. Then I install it from there. You could do that with the latest version of NVDA.

Since you're running Windows 10, Jim, the default synth is 1 core now.

You'll like it better, I believe Some resources for you are: http://www.josephsl.net/tutorials/ The user guide is in the NVDA help menu, ie, nvda+n, then h, then hit enter on u for user guide. There is also a command quick reference, accessed similarly to the userguide, but press q instead of u. These are all free. NV Access also sells some training materials, available at: https://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ Buying them helps support the project. HTH.

Hi
Have you already got a copy of nvda already? if not you will need to get a copy from http://www.nvaccess.org It can be found under the downloads section.
To get into the preferences of NVDA after it has been started it is the nvda key + letter N then arrow down to help and a sub menu will come off it that is where you will find the user manual.
If nvda is not running it is the alt key +ctrl key + the letter N to start your copy of nvda.
To quit your copy of nvda it is the nvda key + letter q.
Where i refer to the nvda key this is a modifier key and can be the insert key, the extended insert key or the caps lock key.
You would use what ever one you chose to say quit nvda for example insert key + letter Q
For windows 10 users now the default voice i think is set to windows one core voices.
Otherwise earlier than that is e speak which i use all the time.
Just to give you the heads up also when you go into the preferences part of nvda then arrow right it will now take you into the settings. Here you can arrow down and up these sections.
To go into any of the sections use the tab key and tab through each part of that section. You will see what i mean.
You can also use other sapi 4 and 5 voices along if you want to pay for either vocaliser or eloquence voice not charged by nvaccess.
If you grab it from the website after it has been downloaded and the file clicked on and started it has a talking installer. You will need to agree to the documentation then after that it will give you 3 options one to install to your pc, the second to make a portable copy and the third to run as a temp copy pick the first option and follow directions to install it to your pc.
If a UAC screen comes up for security use the alt key + letter Y to allow nvda to be installed to your pc.
I do have other material on how to use nvda on my website if you are interested but is only for a desk top user both in audio and written. Gene nz

Hi Jim,
The ugly voice is e speak. To get a new voice;
Open the nvda menu with insert+n, Arrow down to preferences submenu, Choose synthesyzer, You will find a sapi choice ther,, choose it with eenter, Open preferences again, Now arrow down to voices, Chose a voice you like, hit enter, Open nvda menus again and choose save changes on exit.
This should work, if it does not, I know there are people on this list who will help further.
Just about all the basic commands for working with menus, docs and reading and avigating text are the same as jaws.
You will not be disappointed.!!

Hi all, I tried downloading NVDA once a couple years ago, and couldn’t stand that double ugly voice that came out of my computer when I tried to do what I was supposed to do to get things going. So, first question. What’s the easiest way to download the latest version of NVDA? Second. How do I learn the commands to make it work? And finally how do I get rid of that terrible voice and get one I can understand and tolerate? I am running windows ten, and jaws 2018. Jim

Re: Question regarding NVDA and speaking message columns in Outlook
Jonathan COHN
Was this done by reducing the number of columns in your Outlook view? In JAWS the column that indicates an attachment is present in a message is only spoken when there is actually an attachment. Also, the status column is not spoken for messages that have been read and no other action has occurred on the message.
Thanks, Jonathan Cohn
