Add-on compatibility notice: NvDA Remote Support add-on 2.1 is not compatible with wxPython 4, new release recommended

Hi all,

The below notice is considered critical:

It’s happening again: with the introduction of wxPython 4 in next snapshots, users of NVDA Remote add-on are having startup issues related to missing attribute in wxPython 4.

I propose the following solutions:

  • I highly recommend releasing Remote add-on 2.2 to fix this issue.
  • Perhaps adding a statement on nvdaremote.com website explaining that Remote add-on should be disabled if using recent NVDA next snapshots.
  • The community should release an updated version of this add-on with permission from add-on authors and maintainers.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Problem with last "NVDA next" and "Remote Support

Hi,
And there has been no update since then? Looks like another community ad-on compatibility notice is in order...
Cheers,
Joseph

NVDA and Google Play?

David Russell

Hi NVDA Group,

In April, I signed up for, and purchased two books to read from my
desktop on Google Play. All was well until last evening when I could
not access either title. It had been a couple weeks since I had read
one of the two titles there.

Everything appears "collapsed" contents, navigation, and any other
identified links when using the up or down arrow keys when in Google
Play itself.
When going to previous or next page in the document, NVDA reads, Oops
page cannot be opened - or something like that.
Of course, getting help from Google is near impossible. Trying to
refresh FireFox with the f5 key from both the address bar, and in
Google Play itself, does not change things.
Any ideas on how to make reading once again accessible?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Addint a Desktop Shortcut for Programs or Apps under Windows 10

Ervin, Glenn

I don’t make folders often enough to have known that command.

We have so many things to remember as it is in our daily lives including all the passwords and changing systems that we have to draw the line sometimes.

On the desktop and elsewhere, I just found it easier to unselect anything and use the applications key to go to “new” and then enter on “Folder”.

I expect to see such commands documented when moving threw menus and submenus.  It should not be necessary for a skilled user, who learns a lot about Windows and programs by looking through menus and dialogs to have to look at a commands sheet when it is expected that accelerator or shortcut commands will be shown in menus.

Also, material that I consider to be among the best produced doesn't mention this command.  I doubt that more than perhaps ten or twenty percent of blind users know this command.

Well, I still am.   CTRL+SHIFT+N has been on Microsoft issued keyboard shortcuts lists for a very long time now.

If you go to the Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows webpage, as it exists today, it shows up whether you choose All Products, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 from the dropdown for Product Version at the top of the page.

They've also been calling these keyboard shortcuts for as long as I can remember now, but I do recall the "accelerator command" terminology in the mists of memory.  I think that went out as of Windows XP, but can't be certain.  It may have been with the introduction of Windows 7.

Re: Path On Portable Copy

Ervin, Glenn

What I had to do was to group the folder by date, and at the bottom of the list was:
"today"
And I just deleted that, since the only thing I put in that folder that day was NVDA.
That was scary, not knowing all the things you are deleting, because on a portable drive, the way my computer is set up, there is no recycle bin.

No it never did this, it was a bit of an argument about whether it should or
not but it seems the result was inconclusive. personally I'd have preferred
that it defaulted to nvda, and gave the option to change it much like zip
does for extracting files, but I never did see this done.
Basically you can normally tell the files by their dates and times, so one
can easily remove them or more usefully copy them to a new folder called
nvda. At least then if it won't work you know you missed some!

Hi,
I just tried to make a portable copy of NVDA, after updating my local copy.
I gave it the right drive path, but I did not specify \NVDA
This made a mess in my drive and I hope I only deleted the NVDA files in
order to re-do it.
I have made portable copies of NVDA many times before.
I thought that it automatically made the NVDA directory.
Did this change?
I would think that by default, it should create a folder called \NVDA.

Actually, you can partially view it by reading the FileZilla status bar

hmph one skype alternitive down

Hi.

Miranda ng and skype web don't work, tried and failed to signin.

The plugin hasn't been updated in ages.

The only thing I got was several attempts from microsoft on my account asking if I had in deed signed in from new zealand on an unknown brouser.

I confirmed it was me, since well it was me, my country was listed in all attempts.

I will not be retrying this again.

The last thing I want is my account to be put as hacked which will report my google as hacked and a lot of other stuff.

It took me changing a lot of passwords and reloading a lot of programs to get things to work.

A friend had this among other issues, and she simply had to reformat and reinstall windows and reformat all her windows mobile phones and reinstall apps and everything.

She got it fixed but it wasn't really worth it.

I rechecked with normal skype and it still works which is fine by me.

As an alternit, a few have used google hangouts, and I know jabber can be used for chat in miranda ng however I really don't know if I should bother as such.

Maybe hangouts will have to be the new skype if it ever gets to that.

Re: Addint a Desktop Shortcut for Programs or Apps under Windows 10

Well windows 7 is not a piece of utter crap just like xp is now total crap.

Its got at least 2.5 years before it becomes rubbish for all time.

Its still a good os till the wrecking ball hits it and thats not for a bit yet.

I will keep using it either till it becomes to insecure to use it or my cpu explodes.

This is a 6 year old 3rd generation intel so any of those things could happen.

The following uses JAWS commands for a couple of things, but any NVDA user should be able to "translate" to NVDA with relative ease. *

Creating a Desktop Shortcut for a Program/App Under Windows 10*

by Bill White

1. Go to your desktop and make sure nothing is selected. To do this: press CONTROL plus SPACE, then JAWS (or other screen reader) should say, “Not Selected.” If you need to, hit CTRL+SPACE again.

2. Press Applications/Menu Key or SHIFT plus F10, and Arrow down to the New Submenu, then press ENTER.

3. ARROW down to Shortcut then press ENTER.

4. When it asks you to type the location of the shortcut, type: %windir%\explorer.exe shell:Appsfolder

5. TAB to the Next button then press ENTER.

6. When it asks for a name for the shortcut, press the DELETE key then type: AppsFolder

7. TAB to the Finish button, then press ENTER.

8. Now, on your desktop, you will have a shortcut that reads: AppsFolder

9. If you press ENTER on this shortcut, a special Windows system folder will open containing all of your apps.

10. Now, create any shortcut for an app as follows:

11. Press ENTER on the AppsFolder icon.

12. Use First-letter Navigation to find and select the app for which you want the shortcut on your desktop.

13. ARROW down to Create Shortcut, then press ENTER.

14. When it tells you that a shortcut can’t be created here, and it asks if you want a shortcut on the desktop, press ENTER on Yes.

15. That’s it. Now you will have a shortcut for your desired app on the desktop, along with the AppsFolder shortcut, which you can use later when you need to create another desktop shortcut.

Re: its beginning

The thing is that the skype7 powerfull features like keys, etc just didn't make it in other versions.

With the death of skype kit its not like someone could port skype over and convert it to a windows app.

Thats a thought, I do wander if people could ask microsoft to at least port the classic skype interface over for us if not the entire thing, menus, shortcut keys, sound, accessibility, and a few other things like lists of things and the windows and panels as well as boxes.

I do wander what is needed to convert something like skype with the classic app converter to a windows store app, that at least for us on 10 would fix things.

It would be better if ms well ported things over.

Skype does face stiff competition from other previders.

Just about everyone I work for and with uses whatsapp.

Bar family recordings and the like most of my stuff is handled with sightling help via whats app or standard phone calls.

Team talk does the same, incidentally, but I was very impressed by a friends Face time  system, its a pity Apple does not make this system work on other platforms.

Hi.

Microsoft pushed out skype 8 preview today to me when I looked for updates.

I can't find how to turn it off the options are not in advanced, luckily I can still get classic skype, but if this really becomes a problem, my plan will to unsubscribe from the nvda group, its about the only thing and reason I have skype classic now.

After that I will use skype classic for amily things till microsoft finally pull it, however, I suspect its going to be a smart device, skype and maybe whats app pritty soon.

Its also clear that microsoft is now no longer keeping it a secret on skype7's death.

They are not updating it anymore.

Thats fine as long as we can still get it and never get an update for it again.

Re: end of the line for nvda skype group

It looks like its not completely the end.

It appears for 7 and 8 users we will have to just not install the skype classic update.

For 10 users, it appears microsoft have left us alone.

Previded we can get the skype classic program, ms doesn't ask us to switch over to the universal.

So at least for the moment they are leaving us alone who knows how long that is but still.

I have not as yet tried this.

The nvda skype group didn't have much traffic and I was thinking of pulling out anyway.

Skype isnot a real issue for me as I hardly use it.

Skype web via miranda works for text, now if I can use it to call skype then fine I guess.

There is zello but I have never figured it out as such.

On the other side those of us on android and ios devices will still be able to use skype,.

This seems to effect desktops, that is windows, mac and linux only.

For group chats there is teamtalk, and tthub.org are offering competitive rates right now.

I am interested though in some kind of voip or sip app that is easy to use, accessible and can use as a protocol skype calls, messages, groups and file shares which are the only things I ever use.

If that can be done and if I can login with my skype account then fine.

Right now skype classic still works.

Eventually that may die but who knows.

The skype interface with miranda ng is a bit different, I will have to get used to it but right now well.

I don't use skype enough to justify upgrading to anything new, I barely use that much of skype's power as it is.

I have to say its not been used here for almost a year now.
I find it irritating that such a simple system is not being made available in a basic form for low tech users and without the flashy front end changes every fortnight. Skype always had a reputation of bringing out improvements that broke it, and it seems this has not stopped with Microsoft owning it, sadly.
So what else is out there for desktop machines for good quality audio over the internet free?

Hi all of you.

Pulling out of nvda skype group now because of 1, skypes uncertain future and 2. the fact I hardly contribute to it, I will shift all my conversational contributions to this list from now on if I havn't allready.

I will still use skype classic for family, but due to things as they stand I may have to remove skype from my contact and other info, it will be email for internationals only, skype if they need, but I will no longer advertise.

Microsoft has lost another user, skype classic interface is easy to understand, the new one I just don't care for.

Its a pitty its got to end this way but I may as well cut my losses right now rather than having to bother with things going bang.

I will have to either search for another solution or start paying high charges for international calls because skype new versions are inaccessible.

Way to go ms.

Can't skype classic just be pulled from the update loop and still be kept active?

somthing that I have noticed is that if I ping a web site in the comand prompt it will read the numbers very slowly then I will not have any nvda at all not even control alt n will always restart my nvda. Somtimes it will but other times it will not. It occures every time I try to do a ping test on any web site it causes nvda to stop working. I will have to do a hard shut down and restart my pc to get my nvda back.

One also has to say that my shortcut for create a new folder will work on windows 7 as well, and is why I remember it. Not much good learning it on ten then when you get on a 7 machine it won't work!

You are definitely correct that ALT+number row 2 is for the second item in the QAT, but every instance of Windows 10 I've dealt with, as shipped, has only two items in the quick access toolbar for file explorer: Properties (1), New Folder (2).

There are six functions one can check or uncheck to include on the Quick Access Toolbar: Undo, Redo, Delete, Properties, New Folder, Rename in that order from top to bottom. The order in which one checks the various items if all are unchecked determines which position number each will have, 1 through 6 [or whatever number you have checked] on the QAT visually and their invocation via ALT+number row 1 through 6.

But, by default, and unless the system has been customized, ALT+2 should be New Folder.

One of the reasons for the many roads ethos is in case of clashes in apps orf course.

I mean I doubt if the Windows cannot create a shortcut here, would you like it on the desktop was actually invented, more like it happened as a development of windows not being able to make a shortcut when in a certain folder in a certain mode, ie maybe having opened the file internally and locked the folder its in.

The following uses JAWS commands for a couple of things, but any NVDA user
should be able to "translate" to NVDA with relative ease. *

Creating a Desktop Shortcut for a Program/App Under Windows 10*

by Bill White

1. Go to your desktop and make sure nothing is selected. To do this: press
CONTROL plus SPACE, then JAWS (or other screen reader) should say, “Not
Selected.” If you need to, hit CTRL+SPACE again.

2. Press Applications/Menu Key or SHIFT plus F10, and Arrow down to the
New Submenu, then press ENTER.

3. ARROW down to Shortcut then press ENTER.

4. When it asks you to type the location of the shortcut, type:
%windir%\explorer.exe shell:Appsfolder

5. TAB to the Next button then press ENTER.

6. When it asks for a name for the shortcut, press the DELETE key then
type: AppsFolder

7. TAB to the Finish button, then press ENTER.

8. Now, on your desktop, you will have a shortcut that reads: AppsFolder

9. If you press ENTER on this shortcut, a special Windows system folder
will open containing all of your apps.

10. Now, create any shortcut for an app as follows:

14. When it tells you that a shortcut can’t be created here, and it asks
