Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>

This link:
https://blog.twitter.com/developer/en_us/topics/tools/2018/discontinuing-support-for-twitter-kit-sdk.html
talks about why they are discontinuing support for one of their SDK tools.  It will still continue to work, it's just hat twitter themselves won't be contributing to it anymore.
On the link:
https://developer.twitter.com/en/pricing.html
you can get details on exactly what they're charging for, and how much, though it's not laid out in a straightforward method, you need to select the various features, and their level to see what the fees are.
It actually looks like twitter has been targeting fee based services for quite some time now.  As far back as 2010, twitter was charging for access to historical data for researchers, commercial developers who wanted back history, and the like, so this isn't anything new. Last march, twitter had run a series of surveys, asking if users would be willing to pay for different components of the twitter landscape.  I didn't find anything breaking down what those responses were, but it isn't surprising that the questions were being asked.  After all, every company has a need to make money, or they won't remain a company for very long.
But, as far as the impending charging for access goes:
https://www.xda-developers.com/twitter-new-api-third-party-clients/
seems to indicate that the fees for a standard twitter client aren't trivial, and seems to contradict what I read earlier about clients simply not being able to get realtime updates.  It appears more digging is necessary.
Apparently, twitter is trying to herd users into using official twitter clients only, (or the web site), but as of now, I can't say whether this is true or not, since there seems to be more knee jerk reactions to the announcement than actual facts.  I suspect truthful information will slowly filter it's way into the general populous over the next few months, then we'll know for sure what the deal is, but for now, just keep using the client of your choice, and wait until it breaks ... (if it breaks) ... before spreading possibly untrue information about the change.

Re: Problems with NVDA and latest Windows 10 1803

Hi Jackie,

Steve, may I ask if you're running NVDA as portable? Truthfully, I personally cannot replicate any of the problems you're having w/my Windows 10, latest build,. Can you tell us:

Firstly, I am not running as portable on the machines tested.

1) How are your views set?

Details, This PC by default, no Preview Payne, no Navigation Payne.

2) What details do you have enabled?

All of them I think.

3) Is your File Explorer maximized?

Yes. I even tried Windows+Up Arrow to make sure it was.

I do know that portable NVDA just does not read lists as well as when it's actually installed. I don't know if this is because it's better able to hook into various machine processes or what, but that is something my experience has definitively shown me.

Well I haven't found portable to be any worse for me thus far, but now, Explorer is completely unusable on all my machines. When you enter a folder, it reads out the first file name, but from then on, it is silent.

All the best

Steve

I just close file explorer and reopen it when it starts acting funky. either
that, or I shut down NVDA and restart it. Alternatively, I can sit here and
stare at the computer for a few minutes, until it decides to behave itself,
which it does eventually do. It has to be an NVDA thing, though, because it
doesn't do this with System Access at all. I have trouble alt tabbing
between windows when it wants to act up, and then I have trouble going
through list items. It's like the cursor doesn't want to move through them
but it actually does; it's just NVDA isn't reading me the items. I also find
that if I have more than, say, two or three windows open and I close one of
them, it starts working fine again. It's random, though, so I never know
when it's going to misbehave. It's not aggravating enough to make me switch
screen readers, though. I just figure it'll be fixed in a future update and
go with it.

Evening nvda list subscribers

I am Marisane from SA.

I've just bought a win10 machine.

I've had it for a month now.

It's been giving me problems I've not experienced in my life of using
windows operating system machines.

This win10 machine consumes more data than I can understand.

I am contracted to one of SA's network operators (Vodacom).

I receive 4 gb (2 gb per day and 2 gb per night).

The minute I connect my mobile wifi modem, much data is consumed.

What is win10 doing different from what was done by win7?

What extra apps are installed/updated?
Can I delay the update or will this disadvantage my machine? In other
words, will my delaying the update lead my machine to being attacked
by viruses?

How many times should this data-consuming update happen in a month?

What setting do I have to turn off to save data?

Your assistance in this regard is appreciated in advance.
Marisane

Re: Using NVDA with a Twitter Account

Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>

Wrong.

twitter is not charging for api usage, as a whole, it's only charging for certain aspects of the api, which will (at most) limit functionality of third party twitter clients, not make them unusable.  According to the site I read, it's mostly related to realtime interactions, and refresh times of tweets, that's all. Your twitter clients aren't going to magically stop working, they just won't update instantly anymore.  Personally, I don't find this to be a problem in the least, but that's just me.

I am using TW Blue and find no keyboard method of "following" or "unfollowing" a source. Even the applications key fails to offer such an option.

Re: Using NVDA with a Twitter Account

Clare Page <clare.page@...>

Hi!
Judging from what I have heard recently, third party client developers having to pay exorbitant fees to use the new Twitter API is only part of the story.
I gather that third party Twitter clients should still work after 16 August, but, as the new Twitter API replaces the streaming API we've had for some years now, not having the new API in third party clients means that they will no longer be able to stream tweets: in npractice, this simply means that users will have to wait longer for tweets to come in, which was the case when I joined Twitter in 2009 anyway, so it's not a big deal-breaker for me.
As for Twitter with NVDA, to get back to the subject of this list, I do not know, as a Windows 7 user, whether the Windows 10 Twitter UWP app works well with NVDA, but NVDA users should still be able to use the currently accessible third party Twitter clients after 16 August, but without streaming of tweets, if I understand right. So there may not be a monopoly on Twitter after all.
I hope this reassures anyone on this list who uses third party accessible Twitter clients at least a bit!
Bye for now!

It affects all third party apps wherever they run.
its the old API which is deprecated.
The new one to do the same sort of thing has to be paid for by the app
makers and twitter have made the cost so high, I suspect only themselves
will be able to use it and hence make sure you get the promoted adverts by
default. its what I always said about the one game in town syndrome. You get
your monopoly then you cut everyone else out and coin in the dosh.

What is the easiest way to "follow" and "unfollow" sources with NVDA. The
official Twitter web site merely advises to "hover over the person with
your
mouse", offering no keyboard option. I am using TW Blue and find no
keyboard method of "following" or "unfollowing" a source. Even the
applications key fails to offer such an option.

NVDA updated to eSpeak 1.49.2 in NVDA 2017.4.

eSpeak 1.49.3 is in development but not yet released.  So they may have addressed some of the issues but they haven't released them yet :)

Is there a strand of Windows 10 that will work like old windows, IE not forced to get the 6 month updates but still get security patches, so one can use it without worrying about it having to effectively re install and change lots of stuff when it does?

Hello Marisane.
Read this page. It might help you. https://www.techyuga.com/stop-windows-10-from-using-so-much-data/

I experienced something similar when I first got this machine and was having trouble with my ISP. I set Windows to use my mobile phone's data connection, and it promptly maxed me out for the month. I set the connection to metered .. a little too late, but at least I know to do it if I ever need to tether to the phone again. Now, the page above is somewhat out of date; I believe mS has made some changes in the last year, due in parts to complaints like yours. If you get stuck, do a google search for something like "setting metered connection in Windows 10" and you should eventually be set straight.

Evening nvda list subscribers

I am Marisane from SA.

I've just bought a win10 machine.

I've had it for a month now.

It's been giving me problems I've not experienced in my life of using windows operating system machines.

In other words, will my delaying the update lead my machine to being attacked by viruses?

How many times should this data-consuming update happen in a month?

What setting do I have to turn off to save data?

Your assistance in this regard is appreciated in advance.
Marisane

Well, I don't use feeds for anything I don't think, but if I did, I
might use it. It would be a quick way to get to feeds. For instance,
suppose I'm reading a couple of news feeds. It would probably be faster
to use the addon and browse headlines and hit just the stuff I care
about, than to open a browser and do it that way. This way I'm only
opening a browser for full articles that I'm interested in reading. It's
just another way for people to get stuff done. I mean, what's special
about the Twitter clients for the blind? We can all just go to Twitter's
website now. But the clients make it easier.

It affects all third party apps wherever they run.
its the old API which is deprecated.
The new one to do the same sort of thing has to be paid for by the app makers and twitter have made the cost so high, I suspect only themselves will be able to use it and hence make sure you get the promoted adverts by default. its what I always said about the one game in town syndrome. You get your monopoly then you cut everyone else out and coin in the dosh.
Cynical? me?

Hello,

Does this effect android apps as well? So, August it sounds like your
saying it's the win10 app or nothing on that platform or the web site?

Thanks.

Hi. Just wanted to let you all know if you didn’t know already as of the
middle of August we will no longer have access to the 3rd party apps that
work with Twitter such as TW Blue etc. So if you are on WIN 10 use the newly
improved Twitter UWP app which is accessible. They are changing their API
for 3rd party access so if you want to complain to Twitter do so in the
appropriate places.

I use Chicken Nugget on my Windows machine and it works great with NVDA.
Usually the follow/unfollow commands are on the user details or profile
screen, so find that screen in TW Blue and you should be able to find the
buttons for following.

Whatever you do with third party twitter apps is going to change very soon as Twitter are removing access to the API and charging huge megabucks for the new one. Methinks they want to make sure all their adverts are seen. Cannot think why! grin.
I don't do it myself, but I know several people who think twitter will be useless in August.

However the microsoft web cams the live series runs on just about everything and is good enough.

Possibly something you have installed or updated recently. Maybe see if

and see if you can find anyone else with the same problem.

Since yesterday I just can't shutdown my NVDA by the task manager.
When I tried "taskkill /f /im nvda.exe" it gives me a error message.
And that's the only way I found to fix the bug that freezes my computer
'til I restart it. If I can be faster than the bug, I'm able to give
