user account won't speek in nvda

Bobby Vinton <vinton.bobby5277@...>

Just to let you know I had to install nvda from scratch and when I was on the log on screen nvda would not speek and also user account won't speek at all and every thing is at all defaults.  I am wondering what could be causing this.

No, unfortunately the left and right arrows did not work in this situation.

Maybe tab would take you to the next number box in the sequence? It makes sense that the arrows aren't working, since the arrows spin the numbers. I've never seen anything like this way of putting in a code, but maybe tabbing through once you set the first number will work. Just a thought.

When I go to the edit box to enter the number it gives me 000000 and expects me to spin the zeros into the numbers in the code. When I go to the first zero and I spin it with the up and down arrows to the first number in the code, I can’t move to the next zero to enter the second digit of the code. If I move with the right arrow and I spin it rotates the first digit instead. Have anyone seen such a weird way of the two factor verification on any web page like this? How did you manage it? I deleted the zeros and typed the number in their place but it did not take it. I am afraid if I continue to try they would block my access and it would be a hassel to unblock it.

Reviwing messages in Microsoft Teams chats

luciano de souza

Hello all,
When interacting with Microsoft Teams chats, my experiences have been
really unpleasant.
I want to review a long text chat I had yesterday. Being on the field
where messages are listed, in NVDA focus mode, I can press arrows to
move from one message to another.
However, it's very unsuitable the way NVDA reads the set of messages.
Suppose someone says me: "Hello". Focusing on the message, I listened:
"Chat Content Ana de Almeida Albuquerque Sampaio Nunes de Carvalho:
Hello!".
I had the bad luck to contact a person with one name and five last
names. The result is a tremendous frustration. I simply can't advance
without much waste of time.
Afterwards, I ask to myself: "And if I could copy the messages and
paste it on Notepad? Being on the message list, I've pressed
simultaneously shift and the upward arrow. In fact, messages are
copied, but when I pasted it on Notepad, only a small part of
conversation were really copied.
I've undestood Teams doesn't load all messages, but in stead of it, it
loads then as soon as necesary.
At last, I ask: is there a way to copy all messages to Notepad or read
then on Teams environment without the described problems?
I use Windows 10, NVDA 2020.3 and the last version of Microsoft Teams.
Best regards,

Re: Spinning numbers on a bank page?!

Ring your bank and explain how inaccessible that is.

Ask if you can login without this stupid code or type it in like other 2 step codes.

My bank doesn't have this stupidness at all.

I do need help entering pins for things when I need to make new pins, I'd usually would do it in a terminal, but covid,= going out, to wash hands, to stand in a cue to access, an eftpos terminal, to wash hands, to take my mask on and off just to activate a stupid debit card aint worth going out to do that.

I did it but needed sight for the pin entry.

On my bank with withdrawls, you can enter a net code but you can do without it.

I know its not secure to stop this stuff but if I had this issue, I'd just do without it.

Basically you need to tell your bank tha  because of their security system you can't get access to your account and you have a right to do that, so they can either remove it or get you to bypass it or fix it.

If they don't then time to change to another bank and give them a bad rating.

Re: NVDA Keyboard Issue

Quentin Christensen

Is NVDA set to desktop or laptop keyboard layout?  It gives you the option to set it when you install, but if you hit next without paying attention the default is Desktop.  Press NVDA+control+k to open the keyboard settings (your NVDA key will be either INSERT or CAPS LOCK, and that is independent of the keyboard layout).  The first option on this screen is keyboard layout.

Note also that for historical reasons, NVDA out of the box, will still retain the "desktop layout" number pad functions even in laptop layout - there is an add-on if you want to disable that - https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/numpadNavMode.en.html

Kind regards

Quentin.

So, to the issue. I can move by character, word and line but only using the number pad on the right not the original NVDA laptop layout commands. I tried going to the NVDA preferences>settings>keyboard but I couldn’t find anything that could fix the problem.

I think it may be a problem with my laptop keyboard and not NVDA. Has anyone else had this problem?

If NVDA is reporting unknown then definitely the first thing I would try is NVDA+N, then T then "Run COM Registration fixing tool" - that's basically exactly the description of the problem it was designed to fix.

Also, if you haven't restarted the whole PC since updating Firefox, do that first as well.

Spinning numbers on a bank page?!

Re: loss of shortcut keys

Quentin Christensen

I just commented on the linked issue, not sure if it's useful, but what I said was:

"As you noted in the log, at one point, eery keystroke includes the Windows key.  I have had keyboards in the past where they seemed to get a modifier key stuck down (shift, alt or control, etc) - in that case, what I did was very technical, but basically I just kept pressing the offending key quickly  and repeatedly until say a dozen times in a couple of seconds and it usually sorted itself out.  If you try that with the Windows key when this happens does it make a difference?

Otherwise, a log with add-ons disabled would really help confirm this is NOT caused by an add-on."

And Gene, it's still worth reporting issues in Windows 7.  Obviously if the issue ends up being with Windows itself, you're probably not going to get much resolution, but NVDA still supports Windows 7, so we are willing to look Windows 7 issues (and for an issue like this, if we confirmed that it happens across Windows versions is potentially useful)

Quentin.

3. press alt plus tab to find the dialog box.

in normal cases, when you press nvda plus q, nvda dialog box is

Re: message announced by NVDA

Quentin Christensen

In the User guide under object presentation settings: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html#ObjectPresentationSettings

Report Object descriptions is described as:

"Uncheck this checkbox if you don't wish to have the description reported along with objects (i.e. search suggestions, reporting of whole dialog window right after the dialog opens, etc.)."

So my reading is that you are encountering exactly what the option says will happen if you disable it?

Perhaps the question then is more what do you want read differently when you have this option enabled / disabled?  And / or in this case, if you largely want it off, but want it on in one program, using a configuration profile might be the option here.

Quentin.

Hi to all.
I am sharing with you an observation I made concerning the announcement of messages by NVDA and which may be the subject of a PR.

When the option "Report object descriptions" is disabled, NVDA does not speak the text in dialog boxes.
This is annoying when it comes to a message informing the user or questioning him.
For example:
- following a manual search for update request.
- when an add-on uses "gui.messageBox" to query the user.

In this case, it is necessary to read the contents of the dialog box using "NVDA + b".

I think that any message emitted by NVDA should be announced regardless of the state of activation of the option.
What do you think ?
And if you agree, please do the PR.

best regards.
Paul.
