Re: CAPTCHA Be Gone abandoned also?

Damien Garwood <damien@...>

Hi,
Again, unfortunately I have no firm evidence on this, but it does appear that CaptchaBeGone has also been abandoned. The following points lead me to this conclusion.
1. Out-of-date software (no support for Firefox above 57, no support for Edge etc).
2. Captchas never end up getting solved in the first place (though to be fair that could be caused by a number of different variable factors, including point 3 below).
3. Customers no longer seem to be billed (billing system comes up with "500 internal server error" and has done so for a number of months now).
4. Last tweeted 18th September 2016.
5. No reply when contacted.
I won't go starting a rant about the developer involved, however let's just say that these signs come as no big surprise to me, hence the reason I never donated to the NVDA Remote crowdfunding campaign.
That having been said, CBG was a good service while it lasted, and NVDA Remote will still work with NVDA 2018.2 (I just have a portable copy lying around with that installed so that I can still use it when necessary).
Also let's not forget that the Firefox addon interface has been completely rewritten. One of the biggest reasons I'm still stuck on ESR v52 is the fact that another addon I rely on doesn't work on versions later than 57, and the author has explicitly told me that it isn't physically possible to rewrite his addon with the new interface. So I guess this could also be a possibility with CBG. I just wish we'd been told, one way or the other.
Cheers,
Damien.

Yes agreed. No problem in the latest Jaws version apart from the way it decides where H is going to take you to!

If you use tab in a very unfriendly way on nvda it is possible by getting to an apparently non spoken line to get to the calendar without changing it, but any attempt to come up past that to the displaying events from results in the same problem again. Odd stuff is going on at the bottom too, but not actually figured that out yet.
Anyway ticket raised, no doubt somebody will ask a supplemental question about versions, but since it seems not to matter I did not mention it, I've gone back a couple of nvda versions and its always done it in ie and waterfox and firefox 52, but 62.02 is just the same on the new version of nvda.

I didn't test nearly as much with JAWS. If you try this with NVDA, you can move back to something like 4/15. Presumably, that is the earliest date on the calendar since there is no reason earlier dates shouldn't be moved to if they were available. But when I turned browse mode off, attempting to move did nothing. So what is the relation between browse mode, upward movement and the behavior? I don't have the technical knowledge to know if this makes sense but I suspect it is a JAVA script problem in combination with one or more screen-readers.

Well in the latest Jaws I have it is fine now. However when I tested it last
night it changed when moving down from the line showing dates from was
cursored don from and yes when you move back up it says showing dates from
that earlier date. Not sure if you can do this over and over till you reach
the start date of the calendar.

Could it be that the page somehow detects the cursoring as a mouse up or
something?

I'm not exactly sure when the date moving back problem occurs. It may occur
when I am on the first date and move up to the line that says something like
showing events after (a date.) Look for earlier events. When I move back
from the first event, or perhaps from the line about showing events though I
think its back from the first event, the date of events shown from changes.
I'm not sure to what extent this may happen using JAWS.

We need reports from other members. I'm using an old version of JAWS but I
see all headings. Also, when I press enter on the showing events line in
JAWS, the date line changes, as you would expect it to do. When I pressed
enter using NVDA on that line, nothing changed.

In both cases, I am using an old copy of both screen-readers and Chrome is
somewhat old as well.

I don't know this, but I suspect this may be some sort of JAVA script
problem. I found that the calendar doesn't display if I turn JAVA off.

Yes that is exactly what happens. I just tested it and yet jaws is fine on the same page with cursor control. I have raised a ticket. It seems not to matter which versions of nvda you use or whether installed or portable. Apart from the fact that in the previous stable of nvda Firefox never did work but does in this one as long as its the 64 bit version. 32 bit versions just say unknown like the previous nvda did, but this is a red herring in this case.

Re: contact you off list

Gene

Here is confirmation of what I suspected was the case and which I discuss in my message, quoted below this one.

the setting for telling Groups.io to send me my own messages or whatever the exact wording is applies only to GMail accounts.  Ordinarily, GMail doesn't send messages from lists to the sender.  I tried the solution that is often given for this problem which is to use the "recent" command that Google provides.  But I found that that command doesn't tell you whether the message reached the list.  It sends you a copy of any message you send to anyone.  I started receiving copies of messages I sent to friends and all nonlist mail.  So the recent command is useless for this problem.  I'm glad I found this out because now I won't suggest a command that gives the illusion that you are receiving your messages from the list when you are just being sent every message you send to everyone.  I just started using GMail so I tested out this often given possible solution and I found, as I said, that it isn't one.

The solution is briefly discussed in the following thread, as well as that only GMail users have this probem and that everyone else should receive copies of messages they send to the list.

When I started using GMail, I received all messages I sent to Groups.io lists so this setting is evidently on by default.  I don't know if it always was so people who signed up before a certain date may not be receiving copies of their messages and may want to change it.

I get copies of my own messages on this and all other lists I have been on.  therefore, it is reasonable to assume that this is the expected behavior in general.  It may be that those using GMail may not get copies of their messages and I suspect the person who asked this question is a GMail user.  A lot of GMail users have complained about this in the past.  Checking the send me a copy option may solve the problem for Groups.io lists but not for other e-mail lists when using GMail.

This will be my last message regarding "the footer issue" until or unless Mark comes back with something indicating he's made a change.

First, I will apologize to folks, because my memory of "the footer cluster" only applies to HTML formatted e-mail messages from Groups.io.  This is the default format, and the vast majority of traffic I see from all groups when I'm in individual message mode comes to me this way.  That being said, if a user changes the "send format" that they use to plain text email under groups.io the "Reply to Sender" link/function will not be available at the end of plain text messages.  I have never been on any group, including this one or any of the blind and low-vision technology groups, where the bulk of the membership in said group has gone in to their account settings on the Groups.io website and set their e-mail send format to plain text.

Mark has said he will look into trying to create a function in the plain text messages that would allow for the "Reply to Sender" function, or something quite similar to it, that's part and parcel of each and every HTML e-mail that goes out from Groups.io to be available in plain text messages as well.  My guess is that this will be at or near the bottom of the priority list, since relatively few users choose to set their send option to plain text so relatively few recipients ever get a plain text message from a Groups.io group.

If you have an individual message from Groups.io that does not have a "Reply to Sender" link after the main body of the message the only reason that should occur is if the originating party has tweaked their Groups.io account preferences (https://groups.io/account?page=prefs), Post Preference item to "Plain text."  As an aside, I have seen someone recently asking why they did not get a copy of their own message when they posted.  That's not the default behavior, either, since it is reasonable to believe that most are not interested in seeing what they've written themselves.  There is a checkbox at the bottom of the preferences page for, "I always want copies of my own messages," and it is unchecked by default.

Hi.  I use Visual Studio daily for my work.  My advise to you is not to

download the latest update of vs2017 as it crashes with both your Jaws

and NVDA screen readers after you create your project.  Go to

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/productinfo/installing-an-earlier-release-of-vs2017

and download the earlier version before the 15.8 calamity, which is

15.76.  That version works fine with both Jaws and NVDA.  Cheers!

https://www.josephsl.net/files/nvdaaddons/remote-2.1wxPy4-1807.nvda-addon

Hope it will work with NVDA 2018.3.1!

I just went onto the site and went to the events heading and dates semed ok here.

Our charity has a page with an events calendar on it at

www.kingstonassociationforblind.org

Now with nvda, I can navigate by header to the  frame with the calendar in

it. I can hear it say the date its showing events from, with a clickable if

you wish to change it, but when I cursor down, it seems that the calendar

date is a month before the date its supposed to be.

With me so far?

However just powered up jaws 2018 and tried to do the same thing. Headers

do not seem to work to that point. I need to stop before it and go down, but

I'm still cursoring down and this time the event in the calendar does not

alter at all. This is in the latest version of firefox and the latest

version of Waterfox. Both seem to behave  the same, ie differently on the

calendar.

Its as if the calendar thinks I've hit the scroll up in nvda but  is OK in

Jaws. About the headings, well I am not an expert on Jaws, so I might be

missing something.

So what is occurring, our site builder is beginning to lose his mind!

Hi, Brian,

Maybe you could try the site in internet explorer. Give that a try and let
us know if that worked.

Well maybe, but the whole point is for it to work in all browsers. I realise its a Google device and choices may be limited, but to me, Jaws and nvda really should not be allowed to alter the displayed content.

Re: NVDA 2018.3.1 crashing when changing to Focus 40 Braille Display

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Well not that I can see. My observations are that the machine seems to be running slow and there are pending updates to install, and there are sundry other errors going on, possibly due to the slowness.
Maybe if its absolutely duplicatable, you can reboot nvda do the functions that crash it, then assuming you can, maybe hit esc and reboot it and go to %temp% and get the old log, which might be short enough to be more understandable. It says at the start no Briale I notice, I would imagine when you start to use it would you not need to reboot nvda in any case? I do not use Braille myself.

I'm rather intrigued by the slow boot up and constant watchdog interruptions usually due to the machine being slow that was all.
Not to mention all the errors in pump cycle etc that are a bit bizarre.

Subject: [nvda] NVDA 2018.3.1 crashing when changing to Focus 40 Braille Display

Not sure if the log entry below will help at all, since I'm not sure it
captures NVDA's crash when I tried to activate my Braille display. I had to
reboot to get things moving again--NVDA just stopped working completely and
I couldn't restart it. Is there a known issue with this version? I was
attempting to change from no Braille to the Focus, and as soon as I pressed
enter after choosing it, NVDA crashed.

Hi, Brian,

Maybe you could try the site in internet explorer. Give that a try and let
us know if that worked.

Subject: [nvda] Need some browser and screenreader input on a page

Brian
