Quentin, if you didn't see it, Ann just said that she was running 32-bit Firefox on a 32-bit machine.

Seems that 32-bit Firefox is now having a negative effect on both 32-bit and 64-bit machines with anything past NVDA 2018.2.1. I, who am on a 64-bit Firefox with a 64-bit Windows 10, am not having said problems.

The other thing is to make sure you have restarted the computer since installing NVDA, as restarting fixes a lot of issues like this we see when people have updated but not yet restarted.

Also, if you restart NVDA with add-ons disabled (NVDA+Q then down arrow to that option and enter) it might indicate whether the issue is in NVDA or an add-on.  It is also worth checking to see if there are new versions of any of your add-ons.

Finally, if you could send me a copy of your log, I can have a look and try and ascertain what the issue is so we can fix it.

Kind regards

Hi.

I don’t know if you were responding directly to me, but as it happens I have a 64-bit Firefox and a 64-bit oS. I’m not looking for a solution to my JAWS problem on the NVDA list, although the mixed messages I am getting about Firefox screen-reader support are a bit perplexing. Still, there seem to be plenty of NVDA users having no trouble.

My questions below pertained to Waterfox, which I’ve never used, but some people here swear by.

Hi

If you have a 64 bit version of fire fox on a 64 bit operating system nvda will play nicely with it with nvda 2018.3

How ever it seems if you have a 32 bit version of fire fox on a 64 bit operating system it will crash. I only noticed this in the betas then the RC and now 2018.3

It did not seem to do it on the stable version of nvda 2018.2.1 or the alfa version. So some thing has changed between releases.

What, if any, advantage does it really have over firefox?

And how do they handle security updates/bug-fixes? If the versions were concurrent with Firefox at one time and they’re now at 56, that means they are lagging over a year behind the curve now.

Hi,

I also had major issues with the newest NVDA and Firefox.

I am running a 32 bit Firefox, latest version, on the 32 bit version of windows 10. Firefox crashes each time it's launched.

But, after reverting back to the previous version of NVDA, this never occurs, not once.

firefox crash with NVDA 2018.3
From: Clive Pallett

Hello everyone,
I updated NVDA to 2018.3 and tried to launch firefox.  The crash reporter screen came up and I tried to start a new session without result.  I have reverted to NVDA 2018.1.1 and firefox loads normally.  It also does when running NVDA 2018.2 which I was running before.  I have the installation file of the former version on my laptop so used that.  I noticed someone else having issues with firefox with NVDA 2018.3.  Is this a problem with firefox or with NVDA?
I will continue with NVDA 2018.1.1 until I can download the latest version and hope the issue with firefox is sorted.
Best wishes,
Clive Pallett

Hi. You’re not the only one having this issue, I am having the same problem as well. According to one of my friends, there is a way to do it but apparently it’s very complicated. If this could be fixed, that would be great.
Thanks.

Hi

Grab a 64 bit version of fire fox it does not seem to crash on it only
the 32 bit version.

I downloaded a portable version  which had the 32 bit and 64 bit version
of fire fox to see if i had the same problem.

Are you using a 64 bit operating system and if so is it windows 10? 8 or 7?

If so grab the 64 bit version of fire fox but if you are using a 32 bit
version of windows and the 32 bit fire fox browser crashes i guess there
would be more reports.

Hi Clive

I guess if it is the same problem one are you running windows 10 and if so which version or is it windows 7 or 8?

Are you using a 64 bit operating system?

I am guessing you are using a 32 bit version of fire fox on a 64 bit operating system? it seems to only have done this for betas and RC releases and now 2018.3 but not the alfa version.

It worked ok with nvda 2018.2.1 though.

A ticket has been made for this bug. It does not seem to affect the 64 bit version of fire fox though it works as normal.

Re: completely uninstall NVDA

Well you can delte the nvda folder in %appdata% and it will be gone, you need to run a portable copy of nvda first then you can totally nuke the nvda app folder and then you can restart nvda with initial settings.

if it is tthe same problem i have with it crashing it is when you use a 32 bit version of fire fox on a 64 bit operating system. in my case it is windows 10 version 1803.

I just tried it with the 2018.3 release of nvda on a 32 bit version of fire fox and it crashes but not on a 64 bit version of fire fox on a 64 bit operating system.

I have sent a log to mozilla fire fox  but does it from 60 to 62 but this is from the log it gave.

Ah that's right, someone else who had a similar problem has a 32-bit version of Firefox on a 64-bit version of Windows I think it was?

I can't remember whether any of the original people with the issue in this thread were in that category, but if so, the solution was to run the 32-bit version of Firefox only if you have a 32-bit version of Windows, and the 64-bit version of Firefox if you have 64-bit Windows.

If you're not sure, press WINDOWS+Pause / Break to open the system information and it includes whether it is 32 or 64-bit.

In Firefox, go to the Help menu (alt+h) then about.

Quentin.

Yeah, sure, try closing and reopening the browser, if that fails try
restarting nvda, and finally restart the computer if all other fails

Hi,
I just tasted the latest stable version of nvda, and found that NVDA
became inaccessable with Firefox.

It only say list and cannot interact with the page content.
Any advice?

Re: serious problem with nvda 2018.3 with firefox

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi Ron

It all most sounds like the bug i reported for mozilla fire fox.

It was more to do with the betas and RC release of nvda i have not tested it with the 2018.3 release of last night.

The problem i had i am running windows 10 version 1803. it was a 64 bit machine running mozilla fire fox 60 up to 62 a 32 bit version of it.

This was with the betas and RC releases of NVDA. When you opened the browser it would simply crash all together and would come up with a bug report.

It still does it on 2018.3.

Funny thing was it did not happen with a alfa version of nvda nor with the 2018.2.1 version of nvda.

But if you use a 64 bit version of mozilla fire fox now on a 64 bit machine it does not crash. But as soon as you go back to using a 32 bit version of fire fox on a 64 bit machine it crashes on my windows 10 machine.

I think if you use a 32 bit version of fire fox on a 32 bit machine i do not think you would see the problem?

Hello Quenton and List,

This is the first time I have reported any issues with NVDA and Firefox, but I do see in 2018.3 a major and terrible issue.  Every time I run and after using the dialogue to type in a new address or using the bookmarks in Firefox latest version, Firefox crashes.  This is consistent and absolute.  I did restart Firefox, the computer and then tried NVDA with all add-ons disabled.  Nothing solved the problem.  This is certainly a show stopper.

I am using Windows 10 latest version with a 64 bit 16 GB RAM 8 core Intel system.

Have you restarted the computer since you updated?  If not, please try that first.  Next, try disabling add-ons in NVDA - the easiest way is to press NVDA+q then down arrow to "restart with addons disabled" and press enter.

it's evidently the same problem that has been discussed today that seems to occur when running a 32 bit virsion of Firefox with the latest NVDA. This illustrates why I either don't think people should use an updator when updating a screen-reader or that if they do, they should take the precaution I discuss below. I would say to get the installation file and try it as a portable version first or, to always have the previous installation file so that, if you use the updator, you can uninstall the new version and reinstall the previous version if desirable.

At this point, you may need to use Narrator to download an older version of NVDA. If you need to know any Narrator commands, others can tell you the ones you need.

What's the exact issues do you get?
Also, you should look into the NVDA log, so we can help you better, then.
