NVDA and Google Play?
David Russell
Hi NVDA Group,
In April, I signed up for, and purchased two books to read from my desktop on Google Play. All was well until last evening when I could not access either title. It had been a couple weeks since I had read one of the two titles there. Everything appears "collapsed" contents, navigation, and any other identified links when using the up or down arrow keys when in Google Play itself. When going to previous or next page in the document, NVDA reads, Oops page cannot be opened - or something like that. Of course, getting help from Google is near impossible. Trying to refresh FireFox with the f5 key from both the address bar, and in Google Play itself, does not change things. Any ideas on how to make reading once again accessible? Thanks in advance. -- David Russell david.sonofhashem@gmail.com

Re: Addint a Desktop Shortcut for Programs or Apps under Windows 10
Ervin, Glenn
I don’t make folders often enough to have known that command. We have so many things to remember as it is in our daily lives including all the passwords and changing systems that we have to draw the line sometimes. On the desktop and elsewhere, I just found it easier to unselect anything and use the applications key to go to “new” and then enter on “Folder”.

I expect to see such commands documented when moving threw menus and submenus. It should not be necessary for a skilled user, who learns a lot about Windows and programs by looking through menus and dialogs to have to look at a commands sheet when it is expected that accelerator or shortcut commands will be shown in menus.
Also, material that I consider to be among the best produced doesn't mention this command. I doubt that more than perhaps ten or twenty percent of blind users know this command.

Re: Path On Portable Copy
Ervin, Glenn
What I had to do was to group the folder by date, and at the bottom of the list was:

"today" And I just deleted that, since the only thing I put in that folder that day was NVDA. That was scary, not knowing all the things you are deleting, because on a portable drive, the way my computer is set up, there is no recycle bin. Glenn

hmph one skype alternitive down
Hi.
Miranda ng and skype web don't work, tried and failed to signin. The plugin hasn't been updated in ages. The only thing I got was several attempts from microsoft on my account asking if I had in deed signed in from new zealand on an unknown brouser. I confirmed it was me, since well it was me, my country was listed in all attempts. I will not be retrying this again. The last thing I want is my account to be put as hacked which will report my google as hacked and a lot of other stuff. It took me changing a lot of passwords and reloading a lot of programs to get things to work. A friend had this among other issues, and she simply had to reformat and reinstall windows and reformat all her windows mobile phones and reinstall apps and everything. She got it fixed but it wasn't really worth it. I rechecked with normal skype and it still works which is fine by me. As an alternit, a few have used google hangouts, and I know jabber can be used for chat in miranda ng however I really don't know if I should bother as such. Maybe hangouts will have to be the new skype if it ever gets to that.

Its got at least 2.5 years before it becomes rubbish for all time. Its still a good os till the wrecking ball hits it and thats not for a bit yet. With the death of skype kit its not like someone could port skype over and convert it to a windows app. Thats a thought, I do wander if people could ask microsoft to at least port the classic skype interface over for us if not the entire thing, menus, shortcut keys, sound, accessibility, and a few other things like lists of things and the windows and panels as well as boxes. I do wander what is needed to convert something like skype with the classic app converter to a windows store app, that at least for us on 10 would fix things. It would be better if ms well ported things over. Skype does face stiff competition from other previders. Just about everyone I work for and with uses whatsapp. Bar family recordings and the like most of my stuff is handled with sightling help via whats app or standard phone calls.

It looks like its not completely the end.

It appears for 7 and 8 users we will have to just not install the skype classic update. For 10 users, it appears microsoft have left us alone. Previded we can get the skype classic program, ms doesn't ask us to switch over to the universal. So at least for the moment they are leaving us alone who knows how long that is but still. I have not as yet tried this. The nvda skype group didn't have much traffic and I was thinking of pulling out anyway. Skype isnot a real issue for me as I hardly use it. Skype web via miranda works for text, now if I can use it to call skype then fine I guess. There is zello but I have never figured it out as such. On the other side those of us on android and ios devices will still be able to use skype,. This seems to effect desktops, that is windows, mac and linux only. For group chats there is teamtalk, and tthub.org are offering competitive rates right now. I am interested though in some kind of voip or sip app that is easy to use, accessible and can use as a protocol skype calls, messages, groups and file shares which are the only things I ever use. If that can be done and if I can login with my skype account then fine. Right now skype classic still works. Eventually that may die but who knows. The skype interface with miranda ng is a bit different, I will have to get used to it but right now well. I don't use skype enough to justify upgrading to anything new, I barely use that much of skype's power as it is.
