Need to speed up Slow voice on Windows start-up

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Hi,

Ive been unable to find an answer to this anywhere on the web for some time now, so, I hope someone on the list can advise me what to do.

I am running Windows10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.165)

with NVDA Version: 2018.2.1

I have Windows speaking the password prompt at bootup. The system is using a completely different voice from the Eloquence that I use in NVDA. That makes me think this is a Windows setting rather than an NVDA setting. I cannot find where the system voice is located or how it is managed so that I can adjust the speaking rate. Any ideas where I can find it and how to adjust the rate?

All the best,

Cearbhall

After reading your further messages, perhaps turning off Braille messages by setting the timeout to zero in the NVDA Braille settings panel will give you the results you want.

That is an improvement, thanks. The good news is that new braille messages
don't snatch me away before I can finish reading.
The bad news is that braille messages no longer appear in the "tnpe a message here" window.
I have to flip back and forth between two windows--one to read and one to type.
Maybe there are keyboard commands for this that will make it quicker.
I type on the pc which is way faster than using my braille keyboard.
The other big problem of extra unnecessary repetitious words in each braille message remains.
I guess this is about the best It can be with current software.
We sure need a braille filtering system to eliminate excess verbiage.

To a sighted user or even an audio user this all will seem picayune no doubt, but braille is just slower.
Message arrives. I take my hands off the typing keys and grope the braille;
then I scroll up or down to find the message because it is not usually right on the display;
then I pan left or right to find the actual words among the clutter of padding from the skype program.
Hurray--I have read one message. When nou have six or eight people jabbering away every small speedup helps.
I can keep up in irc on linux, but not really in skype yet.

Re: Screen Curtain

Hi,
The API this add-on uses is available on Windows 8 and later. The person who is in charge of the overall framework (not me) for which this add-on is a part of is investigating how to bring this feature to Windows 7 users too.
Cheers,
Joseph

Why does Screen Curtain only work on win8 and later?

would be cool if it could be made to work under 7.

Its not just windows 10. I use 7, and sometimes I get the long period when nothing will work. sometimes it says unknown, then start, then a pause then desktop and sometimes landscape too. I have discovered that most of this silliness is due to a driver Jaws added onto my machine. although I do not have jaws set to come on at start, I recently took advantage of a very cheap licence for it and it seems to have added a video driver without asking. I thought these  display drivers all went away after Windows XP, but it seems not. I think the loading of this slugs te machine and causes stuff to be spoken not previously seen.

Hi All,

Does anyone experience this:

After I turn on my laptop, enter my password, it goes to the desktop and
NVDA voice comes up;

Then a long silence during which no key works;

then a message announcing the size of the window;

then long silence; and finally the desktop is working.

Is there anyone to disable the announcing of the window size?  Any other
suggestion?

Many thanks

Re: Does anyone here use EaseUS To Do Backup?

I do not typically do "bump posts," but I'm making an exception as complete radio silence is quite atypical and I'm wondering if my original query, pasted below, might have landed in the cyber bitbucket the first time around.

--------------------------------------
. . . if so, can you explain to me how you navigate the main controls for setting up a system image backup, file backup, or disk partition backup (among the other options there).

I have no problem once a backup is actually set up navigating all of the controls to either recover from it, run the backup again, or control advanced options for said backup, but I cannot seem to navigate the main control column to the left side of the screen where one selects the kind of backup one wishes to set up.

-------------------------------

I guess if it's radio silence again I can safely presume the answer to the question posed by the topic itself is, "No."

Re: The Way NVDA Announces Punctuation As I Type

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

This is not what he was asking though. I think he was asking why a word is presumed to have ended by an apostrophe and then on the typing of the last letter and space spoken again.
its debatable which is totally correct. In one case, ie Jaws, it seems to look for a space to say the preceding word, but on nvda it seems any punctuation also invokes speech. I actually like it as it is, but it can be odd to those used to other ways.

Hi

If you use the nvda key + 2 key it will turn speak typed characters either on and off. If you use the nvda key + 3 it will either turn the speak typed words on or off. The nvda key is a modifier key which is either the insert key, the extended insert key or the caps lock key..

You could also try using the nvda key + letter P. This will toggle between how much punctuation is spoken.

Hi,

I’m a relative NVDA newby just trying to navigate my way through the transition from JAWS.

One thing I’m struggling with a bit is the way NVDA speaks as I am typing. For instance, if I want to type a word with an apostrophe in it, as soon as I hit the apostrophe key, NVDA announces the word to that point, and then announces the rest of the word when I press space at the end.

So don’t is spoken as don t, which is kind of off-putting when word processing.

Is there any way around this?

I have NVDA set to only announce words when I type.

Also, if possible I’d quite like NVDA to announce punctuation that I type, but not punctuation as I read. So I might want the reassurance of hearing NVDA say period or question mark when I enter them at the end of a sentence, but I wouldn’t want it to read out every full stop and question mark in text that I am simple browsing or reading.

Any thoughts welcome.

Cheers, Will.

Hi Diana,
Preferred settings means the synth settings you need to switch between. To configure speech settings, open NVDA menu and go to Preferences -> Settings... -> Speech. If your mum needs automatic switching between English and Mandarin ,try vocalizer expressive on https://vocalizer-nvda.com/
As for OCR ,add a Chinese keyboard layout in Windows language settings and Windows will download data for Chinese OCR and install it. It may take a few minutes.

Hi Larry,

Yes, the add-on is loaded and enabled ok. And I hear “three” with Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+3, “four” with Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+4, “five” and “six”. I don’t see where to configure Preferred setting though.

BTW in Settings / Windows 10 OCR, the Recognition language is English but there’s an option for Chinese.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Diana,

Is this addon enabled and loaded successfully? If so.

After pressing NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+3  if the slot is empty ,you will hear three. Then you can config a preferd setting.Press NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+V ,you will hear "Saved".Repeat this procedure on other slots  then  synth setting will be switched to corresponding slot after press certain hotkey.

I can’t switch to a slot to configure synth settings. Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+1 does nothing, nor Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+2 to Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+6. I tried this in the Add-ons Manager, same thing. Any other suggestions?

Will bookmark nvdacn.com for my mum (I don’t read Chinese).

Hi all!

I just installed the NVDA screen Curtin add-on, and it works great. Traci, my wife confirmed that the screen went dark, and I was able to assign a gesture to turn it on and off.

It seems like it is all working well for me.

I am using the latest alpha snap shot of NVDA, and Windows 10 1803.

Have a great one, guys, and thank you for all of your work!                                                                                                                                                                                                                Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Hi folks,

I've installed the screen curtain add on.

It appears to be running when I go in to the add on manager, but it

doesn't appear just under the tools menu. Also, it does not appear

when I search for it in the gestures / tools area.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

By the way, my Firefox just updated to 61.0.2, and now Ctrl+D works as
expected. Who knows what was wrong... Never mind; the main thing is that
the problem solved itself.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is a problem with your system, I
don't know what it might be. Did you do the test of turning off browse

Scott,

The site you list has another twist on the hover over theme
but it's not hover over. That page is, overall, one of the most
complex I've encountered in a long time.

It's difficult to know what to experiment with. If you have
a specific control you'd like for me to explore to start let me know
what it is.

I should add, and others with more technical knowledge will, I hope, comment on this, that when I try to connect to the site using Google, I get a message that a secure connection can't be established and no connection is allowed.  I can connect on Firefox.  I don't know if the site is actually insecure enough to worry about or if an older protocol is being used that Google doesn't work with any longer because it isn't as secure as whatever is generally being used these days.  If you are going to send personal information to the site, you might want to wait until more information is available.

The links appear to work.  But you won't know it unless you look below the links.  For convenience, move to the repetition of links like getting started, install a server, choose a server, and I'm not sure if there are any other repeated ones
Press enter on one of the repeated links.  I say to use them because they are so much closer to the content.  Then look down from there.  Try getting started first.
Now go back to the join a server link and follow that one.  Look down and you will see that the page has changed.

If you try to follow a link to a server at some point, you will see a registration form.  You may have to wait a little but it will come up.

I haven't looked at the site in enough detail to be sure it is accessible enough to use but the links do work.  They are like links in a FAQ where, once you follow them, part of the page changes and part of it doesn't.  But you won't know that part of the page has changed unless you start looking down.  for example, following one link changes the page so you will see something that says whatever the name is for organizations.  Following another link shows text that says whatever the name is for individuals.

If you wish, you can see if you can do what is necessary to sign up and use the service.  But the links do work.
