Hi all,

Screen Curtain August 7th build will hit the air in about half an hour from now. This build includes following changes as a result of basic add-on review:

  • Settings: now configurable. You can now ask NVDA to not enable screen curtain when it starts (default behavior from now on). Also, the add-on is ready for configuration profile switches – that is, you can enable or disable screen curtain while in certain situations (using an app, for example).
  • Documentation: greatly improved. It now mentions new settings, toggle state, and a link to the actual NVDA issue is provided.
  • Toggle messages: instead of playing a tone whenever screen curtain is toggled, a message will be spoken and brailled. The tone will be heard if screen curtain is enabled when NVDA starts.

Also, this add-on will once again show up on add-ons website under development section as it has gone through basic review process.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hey Joseph

The add-on works like a charm on my Lenovo laptop. I have also set up a toggle hotkey, Windows key+s in my case. I am thrilled about this add-on, because I often have to work with confidential information and one never knows when there might be prying eyes around.

Excellent work!

Brian:
- The problem regards only NVDA and Microsoft Word. I don't need to reboot the machine, all other applications works correctly.
- If I restart NVDA sometimes Microsoft Word unlock and I can continue to work normally. Sometimes Microsoft Word crashes and automatically reopen the last saved file. I lose from 0 to 1 minute of job, because I've set auto save every 1 minute.

Quentin:
- If I alt+tab and back in Microsoft Word it doesn't fix.
- As said above, if I restart NVDA sometimes Microsoft Word works again, sometimes it doesn't. Most of the time it doesn't.
- It happens with any document, both my company documents and new blank document. I want to specify that my Microsoft Word installation is a standard installation with no adon or particular setting. The problem appears also if Microsoft Word is launched in Safe Mode.
- I can't recognize a regular reason why it happens, it seems random to me. Sometime 3 times per day, sometime 10 times. If I type the same text I typed before crash, it doesn't crash again, so it doesn't depend of the specific text.

Travis Siege
- I work alternately on two machines which has the same applications installed and same setting. One is a laptop Asus Zenbook CPU i7 6700HQ and 16GB Ram. The other is a small workstation CPU i7 8700, 16GB Ram. On both the machine the same exact problem.
- The document I work with has no online connection, I mean that if I want I can work offline.
- When Microsoft Word is blocked, I've opened Windows Task Manager to check CPU, GPU and RAM usage, but the percentage is low for all the components.
- Usually I create diferent Microsoft Word document. I mean that I don't work on the same for hours and hours. I produce multiple documents, and each time I close and reopen Microsoft Word. I work on one istance of Microsoft Word at time. The crash happens also in documents that I've opened since few minutes.
- I've tried to work using Windows Notepad application for one day, just to test. I simply pasted the text typed from Notepad to Microsoft Word continuosly. No crash in this way. Of course the workflow is slower.

I've set log mode to debug.
I've attached the two files (nvda.log and nvda_old.log) from the %temp% folder.

This is the steps
1. Run nvda
2. Start to type in Word
3. Word stop working.
4. Wait a while but no audio feedback from NVDA and Word not working still.
5. Restart NVDA with CTRL+ALT+N
6. Microsoft Word automatically reopen last saved document
7. Copy paste nvda.log and nvda_old.log from %temp% to a new folder and attached to this post.

So you are saying just go into that folder and delete the mail program executable? Or is it going to be more complicated than that, involving registry entries etc?

You should remove the 32 bit version first.

Doing so only removes the main 32 bit application files stored in Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird. It doesn't remove the important user data files (Profile settings, custom filters, current mailboxes and content.) stored in the Users\<YourName>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird folder.

Hi can I install this version of Thunderbird over the version 54 that I currently have?

Or is it better to uninstall the version that I am currently using and then install the newer version of Thunderbird?

Re: Screen Curtain August 7th build: to go live in half an hour, website entry will return at the same time

Hi Joseph

Just downloaded the screen curtain add on hearing screen curtain on and off i like that much better than the beeps.

I also checked out the documentation as well and had a quick read.

I think maybe some people may know or some will not that you can asign a short cut key to turn it on and off. There was no mention in the help section or where to go if you are a new user of the add on.

I Until i looked under the gestures section then tools then screen curtain i did not know where this could be done.

Some people may not be aware you can asign a gesture to some of the add ons.

Do you reckon it needs to be mentioned or not just looking at it from a new user.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Long Live Classic Skype

I think, to make sure that Microsoft takes accessibility into consideration, we need to get as many blind and vision impaired users into the insider program as possible, so we can give a lot of accessibility-related feedback to Microsoft. If they were genuinely listening to all feedbacks, they should listen to feedbacks relating to accessibility from blind and vision impaired users as well.

NVDA and windows 10 question.

Hans <lasthans@...>

Hello,
I have a question. I am running windows 10 on a HP laptop. My email client has been windows live mail. Over the past couple of days, when I open windows live mail and view the inbox, everything is fine. When I open a message however, I get the message not responding. Even opening windows live mail, NVDA seems to be very sluggish. I can't even open it the usual way. And faxed the search box isn't even being read. I have to use the windows 10 default mail client to read my email right now. Other than navigating around the desktop, taskbar and notification area. NVDA seems to be going very sluggish. Any ideas what's going on? I have heard somewhere, that this may have to do with an update from either Microsoft or NVDA. Could somebody clear this up for me please.

alfa or beta snap shots

Gene New Zealand <hurrikennyandopo@...>

hi guys

I just looked up where the snap shots are and noted the alfa last
release was on the third. I then looked for the beta version and it
seems a few weeks back maybe 3? give or take.

Has the crash in the beta version been fixed yet it is when you go to
open up the whats new section and the browser comes up  then it crashes
the browser.

About the same time maybe the other page comes up about usage statistics
and it will not let you tab or any thing to try and close it or even to
get it to remind you later.. This is not good if beta quality.

I am guessing it is still the same page for the snapshots.
