Re: How to click on links when they won't click

Jonathan COHN

The only option I didn’t see you list was to route the mouse to the navigator item and then click the mouse button.

I have seen one style of graphical link that Firefox screen readers can’t seem to use at all.

These links have a graphic that is a background image (thereby occupying no real space and then the link is labeled for screen readers with “off screen text”. I think Firefox knows the text is out of the view port but the scrren reader commands to move mouse to content and then click perhaps are trying to move the mouse to the entirely wrong place. On the sites I help with accessibility on, we were able to tell the developers to use an aria-label instead of off screen text and this solved the problem.  But unless you can talk to the developer of the site I guess you can’t go that approach.

In which case the only other solution I can think of is try another browser or screen reader.

Take care

!

Hi all.

I hope someone can help me here.

Once in a while, more and more lately it seems, I can not click with the enter key, or control enter, or the space bar and even with the num pad using numpad 0 enter.

So how do you click on a link in that case?

Thank you

Hi group,

I’ve run across a problem and I can’t quite figure out if it’s just me or happens to others. I was on my website, www.dragonsofmyth.com and found NVDA reading  “table”, “table with 1 row and one column”, “table with 3 rows” over and over again, then reading the text on the page. This only happens on specific templates for the site. I know for a fact that there are no tables on the page as I made the site. This is a new problem, that I only noticed yesterday. The only thing I can think of is NVDA is picking up the images that are used to visually delineate between columns and is recognizing them as “tables”. I would really appreciate it if someone, or several someone’s could confirm this? I’m hesitant to alter anything at the moment, as if it’s just me, I’ll deal with it 😊.

Thanks so much,

Rayn

I’d download 8.2.5 Brian. Its great and works great with NVDA. Its like using a web page. Eventually MS will kill off Skype Classic.

Hi Joseph

Just downloaded the screen curtain add on hearing screen curtain on and off i like that much better than the beeps.

I also checked out the documentation as well and had a quick read.

I think maybe some people may know or some will not that you can asign a short cut key to turn it on and off. There was no mention in the help section or where to go if you are a new user of the add on.

I Until i looked under the gestures section then tools then screen curtain i did not know where this could be done.

Some people may not be aware you can asign a gesture to some of the add ons.

Do you reckon it needs to be mentioned or not just looking at it from a new user.

Hi all,

Screen Curtain August 7th build will hit the air in about half an hour from now. This build includes following changes as a result of basic add-on review:

  • Settings: now configurable. You can now ask NVDA to not enable screen curtain when it starts (default behavior from now on). Also, the add-on is ready for configuration profile switches – that is, you can enable or disable screen curtain while in certain situations (using an app, for example).
  • Documentation: greatly improved. It now mentions new settings, toggle state, and a link to the actual NVDA issue is provided.
  • Toggle messages: instead of playing a tone whenever screen curtain is toggled, a message will be spoken and brailled. The tone will be heard if screen curtain is enabled when NVDA starts.

Also, this add-on will once again show up on add-ons website under development section as it has gone through basic review process.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

NVDA 2018 and a touchscreen tablet

David Mehler

Hello,

I've got a surface pro tablet running win10 (soon to be 1803), that
I'd like to get NVDA going on. My goal is to use the tablet
keyboardless or at least with the option of going keyboardless. I was
wondering are there any audio tutorials of NVDA users demo touchscreen
with win10?

Thanks.
Dave.

Actually there are 5 different menues in Skype Electron.

All the menues access with alt key.

Alt+e for edit menue.

Alt+f for file menue.

Alt+h for help menue.

Alt+t for tool menue.

And alt+v for view menue respectively.

For details, go to those menues and discover how much those menues are accessible.

I’m very sorry to let you know that most of us do not like to spend sometimes to explore new things and want to stick with old technology.

At the end all I can is “No gain without pain”!

StationhPlaylist Studio add-on: checkable list box field testing begins with August 8th add-on development snapshot

Hi all, especially those using StationPlaylist studio add-on:

I’m about to start conducting field testing for checkable list box implementation:

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7491

Background: a checkable list box is a list of checkboxes arranged vertically. The best example is Disk Cleanup where you’re presented with a list of checkboxes for selecting which files to delete.

At the moment wxPython 4’s native implementation isn’t accessible to screen reader users, but two NVDA code contributors found a way to change that (with a combination of MSAA code and some edits here and there). I have also managed to package their edits in a format that can be imported by other add-on authors for testing purposes.

How it impacts Studio add-on: at the moment there are three places where a series of checkboxes are used to let you change add-on settings: metadata streaming, column announcement for track info retrieval, and playlist transcripts. Due to limitations with wxPython 4’s native checkable list box implementation, I’m using checkboxes laid out horizontally. When I first wrote these code fragments in 2015, I envisioned that eventually I’ll be using checkable list in the future, and that future is now. Visually, checkable list box is laid out vertically.

What’s exactly different: starting from StationPlaylist Studio add-on development build for today, I changed metadata streaming checkboxes to a checkable list. To test this, after installing today’s build (requires NVDA 2018.2 and later and you MUST be running StationPlaylist Studio), open Studio, open add-on settings (Alt+NVDA+0), then go to metadata streaming category. Press Tab twice, and you’ll notice that a series of five checkboxes representing stream URL’s is replaced by a list box with five items, each one next to a checkbox. To enable a stream for metadata output, just check the checkbox. After you select OK or Apply, changes will take effect immediately.

The checkable list box code may or may not make the cut for the upcoming stable (and long-term support) version of Studio add-on, most likely it’ll be included in that version. If this field test is successful, I’ll apply this change to other parts of the add-on where checkable list makes sense.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

The add-on works like a charm on my Lenovo laptop. I have also set up a toggle hotkey, Windows key+s in my case. I am thrilled about this add-on, because I often have to work with confidential information and one never knows when there might be prying eyes around.
Excellent work!
Kind regards

Hi Joseph
Just downloaded the screen curtain add on hearing screen curtain on
and off i like that much better than the beeps.
I also checked out the documentation as well and had a quick read.
I think maybe some people may know or some will not that you can
asign a short cut key to turn it on and off. There was no mention in
the help section or where to go if you are a new user of the add on.
I Until i looked under the gestures section then tools then screen
curtain i did not know where this could be done.
Some people may not be aware you can asign a gesture to some of the
add ons.
Do you reckon it needs to be mentioned or not just looking at it
from a new user.

enable screen curtain when it starts (default behavior from

switches – that is, you can enable or disable screen curtain
while in certain situations (using an app, for example).
* Documentation: greatly improved. It now mentions new
settings, toggle state, and a link to the actual NVDA issue
is provided.
* Toggle messages: instead of playing a tone whenever screen
curtain is toggled, a message will be spoken and brailled.
The tone will be heard if screen curtain is enabled when
NVDA starts. Also, this add-on will once again show up on add-ons website
under development section as it has gone through basic review

Does anyone here use EaseUS To Do Backup?

. . . if so, can you explain to me how you navigate the main controls for setting up a system image backup, file backup, or disk partition backup (among the other options there).

I have no problem once a backup is actually set up navigating all of the controls to either recover from it, run the backup again, or control advanced options for said backup, but I cannot seem to navigate the main control column to the left side of the screen where one selects the kind of backup one wishes to set up.

Re: Long Live Classic Skype

This makes me miss skype kit even more, because of things like GW Connect. It was light and not bloated, and it even had better call quality! But I'm just amazed at how these kinds of tech companies always stick their hands in things but then don't even improve on them. Sigh. For now, I use Google Voice and Google hangouts, and teamtalk. I have not touched skype in years for calling people. I use the Miranda NG version to text chat with people. Holy cow, though. If they opened up their platform, I guarantee people will make a better version of the existing platform. Sigh. Oh well. I'll keep using TeamTalk and Google stuff for now.

Re: rude braille

Jonathan COHN

Hello,

Need a few more design considerations.

When we are talking about chat programs there are usually 3 components, functions, message history and message input.

I expect when you are typing input especially from the bralle keyboard you would want the bralle display to have your input.
It could also be beneficial to know how many messages are in the chat history and how many are unread. (perhaps a few status cells for this and also to indicate if viewing history or input. How would you format the status i

Generally converstions can get a bit verpose like saying emogee and giving full name / e-mail address along with time stampts. (often not cared about)

Also, since there are several chat systems out there it might make sense to create a generalized object that could handle what I describe above and then have app level functionality for Skype / AOLM / MS Teams / Skype for business, Slack.

Any other ideas on a generalized braille chat interface?

Jonathan

hi guys

I just looked up where the snap shots are and noted the alfa last
release was on the third. I then looked for the beta version and it
seems a few weeks back maybe 3? give or take.

Has the crash in the beta version been fixed yet it is when you go to
open up the whats new section and the browser comes up then it crashes
the browser.

About the same time maybe the other page comes up about usage statistics
and it will not let you tab or any thing to try and close it or even to
get it to remind you later.. This is not good if beta quality.

I am guessing it is still the same page for the snapshots.
