Re: VLC media player

David Moore

Hi Rosemarie!

I use the VLC media player with Windows 10 as my main video and audio player!

Just download version 3. So and so, and it will work with windows 10

It does amazing things, but it plays all kinds of media, and there are key commands like space bar, plays and pauses, Alt+right and left arrow, forwards and rewinds 30 seconds,

Just right and left arrow forwards and rewinds a few seconds, and so on. It has very easy to follow menus just like on older programs.

I just love it!

Hi, everyone,

I just looked at the site for VLC media player but it doesn't show a version for windows 10. Is there something else I can use to watch this movie? I just had my sighted nephew go on the computer with team viewer and he said that the DVD is in a weird format. It's really too bad that I can't watch the movie now.

Is there a version of VLC that works with windows 10?

Would be worth it though. You could easily watch videos of all kinds once
you get the hang of VLC.

It's not region locked that I know of. Now I'll have to tell my sister that
I'm very embarrassed. She was hoping I'd be able to enjoy the documentary
but I'll have to fess up and tell her the truth. I was hoping I could watch
the movie too but no go. I don't want to get a third-party program just for
that.

Well if its region locked you will have to use vlc to handle it or specially
modified dvd players.

You should be able to play the thing with windows media player, however I
have brought dvd audio extracter and while that can't always get the stuff
off especially if its fully encripted it can crack most dvds its
40 bucks though.

Although I’m not sure the “open with” method actually works in this case. I will have to test it. I usually access through the media menu in VLC.

Try Media Player first I suppose, since you probably already have that. I never use that programme but I admit VLC can present a bit of a challenge for first-time users.

Hi, everyone,

I know I have a CD DVD drive on this computer but I can't watch a documentary my sister gave me for my birthday. Is there something I might not be doing right? I don't want to have to tell my sister that I can't watch the documentry. It's supposed to be a really good documentary about the life of Janis Joplin.

Thanks for any help you can give in advance.

The box is checked to play CD's and DVD's automatically but it's just not happening for me. Maybe I disabled it by mistake--who knows. How do I enable it to start automatically?

Usually by default, unless it’s disabled, it will start playing in media player when you insert the DVD.

I usually disable this.

Re: Ribbon disabler and more.

Glenn,

No you don't get conventional menus because such have not existed "everywhere" in Windows since the advent of Windows 7.  I really don't see the point of this software.  There is a toggle button (and, yes it is an actual button that performs a toggle function) on File Explorer that allows you show/hide the ribbon.  This isn't only available in File Explorer, either.  I have yet to encounter a program that has a ribbon where CTRL + F1 doesn't act as a show/hide toggle for it.

In most, and definitely in File Explorer, if you hide the ribbon and exit the program when it's opened again the ribbon remains hidden. If the ribbon is hidden, hitting ALT makes all the tabs, each of which has a ribbon, appear and picking a tab, either via the letter shortcut or arrowing to it, causes its corresponding ribbon to appear for access and then disappear again once your choice is made.

Re: problem with the blind mice mart site and nvda

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi

It does not worry me if the field names are not spoken out when either you tab into them or use the E key for edit areas or F for form fields.

If i use the nvda key + down arrow key it reads out the whole form so you know what is there. I do also have mine set to automatic.

Even if say i tab down each field to find out what each field is even though it is not spoken out it is only a seconde to press the up arrow key to hear the right name then down arrow key to type in what they want.

At least i know it is the correct field for that edit area.

If some one is that worried the form is in exaccessible  because the form fields is not read out when you tab into it I have seen far worse.

I have used other screen readers and in cases what is spoken out does not go with the field and in other cases it does.

if some one has the smarts and is that worried about the field names not been read out they can make a add on for it then the people who want to use it can and the ones who do not do not have to install it.

Yes, it does so automatically and I think that is a terrible feature to have on when teaching someone to use the Internet.  the person has enough to learn without worrying about things like that arrowing causes this to occur and that tabbing doesn't.  I don't know what happens when you move using quick navigation commands but I suspect you stay in browse mode.  It would be really inconvenient if you wanted to move by edit field until you find the one you want and to have browse mode turn off every time you type e.  And not using this automation allows the user to reinforce the difference between browse mode and forms mode and when you use which because changing the mode is not automatic.

Does NVDA have an auto edit mode in web pages like JFW?
I usually arrow down the page and Jaws automatically goes into edit mode when it moves into an edit field.
The only time this is a pain is when I'm on a page with a lot of edit fields, and I can't seem to get out of them because every time I arrow down the page it pongs into another one.

I never ever use tab only to navigate forms. In fact, I never ever use tab at all to do so. Too much info can be missed by not reading the entire screen. I use arrow keys and spacebar. Tabbing, some say, is the most efficient way to navigate forms mode. I say that tabbing is the most efficient way of missing what is not being read on the screen when using the arrow keys, or object navigation, in some extreme cases like Amazon, will pick that up.
