The Gamages

Hello Steve and all,

Sorry, my mistake, it lands me in a search box so of course it doesn't
speak at that point, pressing tab takes me to the menus etc, it even
works with NVDA,
stranger and stranger.

What version of JAWS are you on? If 2018, you should update to the July

Re: nvda and microsoft word

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Lisa,

You describe your use of the print and read modes of the word document itself. Do you use NVDA's browse and focus modes? When I use a form, I find that the editor (usually wiziwig) in the edit box is not fully accessible and so I keep browse mode on as I move around the form so that I can read the headings and get a feel for the document. Since Word has to be in print mode to allow editing, I keep Word in that mode as I work through the form. When I need to find an edit box in the form while I am in NVDA browse mode, I can press the letter "e" to jump to the nearest edit box and keep pressing "e" until I get to the box I need. I might actually use numpad "-" to bring NVDA to the part of the form where I need to be and then the letter "e" will land on the edit box that I need. Pressing enter here opens the edit box and turns on NVDA Focus mode which allows me to edit the box.

You may already follow this procedure yourself. The main point I am making is that navigating with Word in print mode might be tricky unless the NVDA browse and focus modes are carefully managed.

Is this any help to your query?

All the best,

Cearbhall

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies, ideas and help.

I have windows 10 on both my laptop and desktop, with NVDA 2018.2.1 and word 2013.

This is what I have achieved so far.

Firstly, this is an assessment work book for my course, which you have to fill in to have your assessment done, so you have edit boxes and some combo boxes. So far I have managed to get the document to read fairly well on my laptop, but not my desktop, which is just weird since they both run the same setup. In reading mode of word I can read the document and it will show me the edit boxes and combo boxes, some of which are set out in tables. To fill them in I need to put word into print layout view in order to write in edit boxes, or choose combo box type answers. A little fiddly, but probably not impossible :). In prin layout mode it will default to reading the edit or combo box, so using the key combination to read tables is how you read the label for each thing. Ok, so it's not perfect, and probably should read better, but the fact that it does read, and can be used is definitely a plus :).

On the desktop, the edit boxes and combo boxes do not speak, but there is NVDA plus H which will give focus to those boxes, and tell you to type here. Work arounds yes, and if anyone has any more ideas tips or suggestions on this, I know it's a little complicated, please let me know. I'm sure there's something I probably haven't tried yet :).

Hi Lisa,

I would like to try to help with this, if I can!

Can you say what version of Word you are using, What version of Windows and the version of NVDA that you are using? This will set the grounds for investigation

I use Word 2016 with the latest NVDA (version 2018.2.1) and windows 10.

I often get word files as attachments to emails and Windows always puts them into protected mode (this is the default action). When I unprotect them, I can read them fine. That is why I would ask you to describe your actions step by step from the point of opening the word file, how you unprotect it. Tell us what you expect to find in the document and what you are not hearing after that.

I have a Microsoft word issue I could do with some ideas on if anyone has any.

I have a document I can read fine with NVDA in protected view mode, but when I take protected view mode off to edit it, NVDA stops being able to read it properly. Run out of things to try.

Any ideas? [smile].

Re: Windows Repair

Well you could always just delete the vm and try again.

Personally ie was never fully stable even in 10.

I use it for spaciffics, gmail on some sites is one, some of my update sites if I want to autoinstall things but its slow, crappy and clunky.

Its only good because a few things still need it and its crappy interface like pcpitstop.

For those places that it is still happy with its a dream.

So perhaps deactivate Windows, create a new VM and then reactivate it? Is this workable?

Hi,

I don’t like the inconsistency of the four cells.  Every time you look at the time or a notification with it, in the unit I saw, the cells were inconsistent in the up or down position.  Some were up more than others, so you got inconsistently nasty Braille.

That’s just my view though.

Hi Larry,

As Simone said, there isn't currently a way to do this.  Perhaps a good question to follow up with is, why do you want to?  Either there might be another way to accomplish what you need, or, of course if there is a good reason to do this, it could be something to consider adding.

Kind regards

Hello,
you can't do it, and I really don't imagine a reason so you want to miss all contents.
The only thing you can do is pressing nvda+space in a webpage, so you go to focus mode for that page.
I have a website in Google Chrome in which only in focus mode I can find 4 links, but this is an exception, not the rule.

app is not readable by NVDA. However, you can restart this app 2 or
more
times to make it readable. I don’t know, whether this is the problem
with the last security updates of win10. or something is wrong with
some
addons, I doesn’t tri with addons disable

Hi,

Using Windows 10 V1803, I notice that when you tab round in settings
now, none of the lists or tabs are voiced by NVDA at all. I do have
App
Essentials installed.

Any thoughts? They are still voiced by JAWS.

Thanks.

Windows Repair

E.T.

This is not directly related to NVDA so please reply off list if you will. I suspect there are some very knowledgeable folks here so am hoping for some badly needed help.

Internet Explorer under Windows 7 running in a virtual machine on the Mac crashes. I need to boot from the Windows 7 disc from the VM so I can run a repair. Since IE cannot be uninstalled this seems the only option. But there does not seem to be a way to actually boot from the disc in the VM.

So perhaps deactivate Windows, create a new VM and then reactivate it? Is this workable?

Re: New Google results page??

Gene

I see no problems with how it works with scripts enabled.  There are some categories you can choose from above the main results such as images and others if you want to filter results in that way.  if you don't choose one, it uses the all results choice and, in the small number of tests I did, I found little or no difference.  More testing may reveal more significant differences with other searches but I'm skeptical and, though I'll keep an opened mind to good evidence, I doubt anything has changed to any extent.

I guess that will maybe done in the next update to that add on?

It did make me laugh i had the monitor off as that is the way i usually do

Hi Quentin. Thanks for the reply. I’ll send the log. If that happened again.
And yes. Creating that kind of algorithms is dangerous too. If you create an

Firefox. Which service should I use. As you know. The webvisum is gone. And
it can no longer useable with latest Firefox. And about the flexible web.

Hi Abdul,

1) I haven't been paying attention, I'm not sure what Flexible web is?
2) There is a screen curtain feature being tested currently. You can read
more and try it here: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7857
3) Image description: Good idea, There was an issue created awhile ago, but
it doesn't appear anyone has looked at the current situation:
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7671
4) Re OCR has gone downhill. I'm not sure. It's not even something that's
easy to replicate
5) There are several performance issues with Office we are slowly working
on. If you have a particular one in mind, search for it on our Issue
tracker and you will hopefully find a relevant conversation to follow:
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues
6) Unlikely. The problem is that CAPTCHAs are designed to make you do
something that proves you are a human, so bots and computer generated
algorithms can't get past them. Ergo, WE can't write an algorithm to defeat
them (and if we do, they will change the test, because if we can, the
spammers can too). The best approach is to advocate for change in
addressing the problem that CAPTCHA seeks to solve.
7) Not sure off the top of my head. After it happens, if you could send me
a copy of your NVDA log, ideally at debug level (to
info@nvaccess.org<mailto:info@nvaccess.org> ) I can have a look and try for
you.

Kind regards

Quentin.

2. What about the screen curtain addon for NVDA?

doesn’t have this important feature in NVDA?

4. In the early updates of win10. When the win10 OCR implemented on
NVDA. It recognize almost everything, for example, the photos in photos app,
even I used it for reading video games menu. But now, its very laggy. And
doesn’t recognize as it was before. Why is that?

5. In Microsoft office 2013 or 2016, the NVDA has so many delays, while

6. In the modern browsers like the Firefox quantum, solving captcha

7. Last question, I’m using Microsoft mail app. And I’ve created a
sepret profile for it. Sometimes after reading or replying to a mail. When I

Hi. I have noticed that Google has recently changed it's search results
criteria. Yes, there is more emphasis on video and pictoral results. A
few things you can try.

1. Press the windows key plus up arrow to maximize the search page. I
am not saying it will yield better results, but it might help some.

2. try ending your search word or phrase with a question mark, like
"Fishing lines?" or "Household Gadgets?"

3. Even if you are given a video or picture search result, there is no
harm in clicking the page in question. There might be textual answers
that might lead you somewhere.

4. You might find your answer in a page other than the first one, like
in page two or 3 of the search results. Sometimes, patience can be a
virtue.

5. If all else fails, or if you are in a hurry and do not have the
patience to persevere with Google Search, then resort to using other
search engines like Bing or Yahoo. These are my strategies, and they do
work for me most times.

search engines like Bing or Yahoo.  These are my strategies, and they do
work for me most times.

Cheers!

Re: New Google results page??

Gene

All maximizing a page does is make it larger.  it doesn't change content.  I do what I have done for years, use the letter h to move by heading.  There are some different headings than before.  Then there is a heading that says something like web results.  I haven't done searches to compare, but the one or two searches I've done seem to show the same or about the same results below the web content heading.

I'm skeptical that the actual results have changed.  See this article:

Changing the results would mean a major change in how google decides to show results in terms of their order.  I doubt they would do it and this article not saying anything appears to be strong evidence against it or against any major change.

Are you looking above the section of web results and seeing differences?  The sections above web results are not the search results people have been using for years.  Those under the heading appear to be.

Gene.

Cheers!

Is there any way to get the traditional system back or does one have to
figure out the new choices system after a log in to actually make it act in

a sensible way?

Re: List of Annotations in Word

It sounds like this is an issue across the board, because it sounds like JAWS is having a very similar issue with Word and track changes.

You're welcome - it used to be easier.  Those shortcuts have changed (and got longer) since I last used them.

Quentin,

Whanks for the shortcut. I have used the review tab, but wasn't aware how to bring up that list.

Hi Kelby,

It is an issue we are aware of.  The issue and associated conversation are at: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/6297

Basically NVDA gives the process 20 seconds to run and if it hasn't finished in that time, it cancels it so that the user isn't left with an unresponsive system for too long.  We're looking into how we can improve that.

Word's reviewing pane lists all the track changes etc.  You can get to that from the reviewing pane, and the easy, quick and logical shortcut* to get to it is alt+r, z, t, t, p, enter

If you want to "clear" track changes so you can just see comments etc, you can press ALT+r, a, 2, s to accept all tracked changes and turn off tracking.

*Shortcut may or may not be easy, quick or logical

When I am in a Word document with a lot of annotations and press NVDA+F7, then check the radio buttons for "annotations" nothing shows up in the list. Is there a way to fix this?
