Please, people, take a look at the page for a given add-on, in this case Mozilla Apps Enhancements, before asking questions like this.  Most add-on developers for the "officially vetted" add-ons document each and every command you can use with it, and this one is no exception.

See the commands listed under the Thunderbird section, In messages list subsection.  The moving of columns is covered there.

I describe how in my message. Also, this is a very common method for something to work. You are presented with a list of items, you select an item in the list and you then tab through the fields to see what you can do. That is how the add-ons manager in NVDA works and a lot of other interfaces.

Re: Is anyone using a password manager?

I've been using Password Safe, and its Android port, for many years now.  I have my vault synced/stored on my Google Drive, though it can work with any one of a number of cloud based services.  I do this because I want access to my vault on the fly and want updates done on Android to show up on Windows and vice versa.  Both the Windows program, and Android app, both keep local copies that they sync with the cloud, in case you were to be in a situation where you had no internet service and needed access.

It's been a while, but I believe I have had a couple of blind clients using this, and given the "old style Windows" interface under Windows I'd be shocked if it were not accessible.  I've never played with the Android port, or iOS port, with TalkBack or VoiceOver, respectively, so cannot speak at all to their accessibility.

Re: NVDA Is Very Sluggish in Thunderbird

Hi.  Give Thunderbird a chance to download all your emails. Everything about Thunderbird gets sluggish while mail is being downloaded, hence NVDA's slow response.  Also, while you are writing mail, it continually copies your message to draft.  These are Thunderbird specific ptasks and not I think, anything to do with NVDA.  We sometimes have to differentiate between NVDA's sluggishness from those caused by  the programs it is supposed to interpret.  NVDA can only respond as smoothly as applications will allow it.  If, However NVDA gets sluggish while you are not actively engaging your system, then the fault lies with NVDA itself, since anything that can go wrong during installation will go wrong.  Cheers!.

Re: how to reorder columns in Thunderbird

The easiest way is to use the NVDA add-on Mozilla Apps Enhancements. You can get it and read about it here:
https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/mozillaScripts.en.html

If you use NVDA key h, a dialog will come up. You are in a list of columns. To get the from line to appear before the subject line, find subject, then tab to and use the move down button. Pressing it once may be enough. As I recall, the dialog has an ok button. You must change the order in every folder. If you want the change to be made in the inbox and other folders, in other words, you must be in the message list for every folder you want to change and make the change.

I really think there is no excuse for Mozilla not to have made changing column order accessible. The program has been in existence for years and they must have gotten many complaints and requests over the years.

Re: Is anyone using a password manager?

Hello,

I have tried many of these things out, including Lastpass, 1Password, Dashlane, Roboform, Bitwarden, and Keypass, as well as other Keypass derivatives. Dashlane is not accessible, roboform is painful, Keypass requires using another cloud service to sync your database which is more work and, in my view, not as safe as you are now trusting your own back-up and another cloud provider other than your Password manager with all your passwords, although some may feel differently about that. Another issue with Keypass is the mobile apps are 3rd-party apps. Lastpass used to be more accessible, and it is usable at present, but it has gotten more painful. They have also had a number of security breaches over the years, so I've stopped using them. Bitwarden is usable, but its desktop apps aren't accessible, and its Android app for auto-fill is fine, but 1Password is better. I have interacted with the 1password devs on a number of occasions through their forum, and through Twitter. They do care about accessibility, their desktop apps are accessible and offer keyboard shortcuts, they work on all platforms with equal accessibility, and they are quite secure. They are also very highly rated, and give the option to use your own cloud provider if you wish, or to use them to help sync your data. Their extension, 1Password X, is usable, but it has a way to go, and could do with more keyboard shortcuts. The one benefit of using that particular extension is the integration with privacy.com for creating virtual cards, which is a service I also use.

By the way, if you would like a demo on 1Password and Bitwarden on Windows, Android, or iOS, check out the BlindTechGuys podcast as about a month ago, we had a number of podcasts where these two password managers were demoed and discussed. www.blindtechguys.com.

To tie all of this to NVDA, 1Password is the easiest to use with NVDA with the desktop app, but Lastpass and Bitwarden are doable, as is Keypass. Unfortunately, Dashlane is not usable.

Thanks.

I think nvda crashes because if tts crashes, nvda would become silent. But, there nvda does not become silent. Rather they hear turn on sound of nvda. They use espeak and aliquent tts. How can I send log on behalf of them?

Hi, Rich,

I had the problem of sluggishness but when I unchecked the status bar, that solved the problem. It's slow at first when I open it but once all the messages are downloaded, it works perfectly with     NVDA.

Hope this helps.

I don't know what the problem may be. for now, write e-mails in Notepad and paste them into a message you have begun.

While I don't have a solution, try Thunderbird portable. That will allow you to keep your current installed version and test to see if the problem is Thunderbird or NVDA.

You can download Thunderbird portable here:
https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable
If yu have problems finding the download link, ask here. You don't need to download anything but the actual portable program.
