what is speech refactor and what will it do? what are its advantages?

Re: how to filter brailleoutput

Gene

How many people use Braille in combination with speech and in what combinations?  If you don't use speech to any extent, this wouldn't pose a problem.  If you use speechenough to change how words are pronounced, than any change in the speech dictionary would change Braille output.  If you change the pronunciation of a word, it will be spelled incorrectly in Braille.

And Braille users may use a machine with speech users as well.

Therefore, a separate dictionary should be made available for Braille users that will only effect Braille if that is possible.

Hi Joseph

This one is to do with the screen curtain.

I have noticed when nvda boots up the screen curtain is on. I have been told by my sighted partner.

this is when you turn on the computer for the first time and not stand by.

so to make her happy i went to tools then screen curtain and pressed the enter key on it so it would turn it off.

I then saved the configuration so it would not come up.

Computer gets turned off have a cup of coffee then boot back up the computer from off.

When it boots back up the screen curtain goes back on so then if the wife wants to use it i  will turn it off.

She says she can not see the screen to do it lol rof. I use it all the time that way i tell her.

I think may be the default should be off until you turn it on.

I am guessing if the sighted partner wanted to use the pc and did not know they would be stumped. On my computer when ever one of my computers boots up nvda comes on and so would the screen curtain until things are ironed out.

Will a short cut be created so it can be turned on and off quickly with out going through the menus?

By the way where i hear the beeps could down the track maybe have it say screen curtain on or off?

I do not know what others think but but would be easier than the beep. I think it is high beep for on and low for off?

fI am going to get her to see when i go into other screens etc if it stays on permanently until it is turned off I am guessing it will.

One thing that has reached my ears from several people using, particularly laptops using relate sound hardware is that the hardware goes to sleep after a few seconds of no sound, probably due to some driver feature, and these means it seems there is a latency when new audio or speech is played even after a few seconds. Obviously not being a 10 user I cannot tell.
One luminary, who lives in New Zealand has called the current state of Windows 10 audio 'a dogs dinner' compared to windows 7.
I will say no more!
Maybe Microsoft need to check drivers more thoroughly before approving them. The person concerned returned a Surface series laptop due to this issue, but more recently others have mentioned it. I using 7, am feeling just a little smug, or I was till it did its woopsie on the a couple of days ago of course.

Once 2018.3 is finalized, we will look at getting speech Refactor into NVDA master as soon as we can, so that it will be available in 2018.4.

Hello,

This question is for NVDA developers. At NVDACon it was announced that there is going to be a new speech framework in NVDA. I assume it's this
issue:

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/pull/7599

However, there is not much activity in this issue lately. I am wondering if NVDA is still planning to finish this issue and if there is any estimate how soon?

I am looking forward towards this issue because I have an idea of another add-on that would be possible if new speech framework is implemented.

Thanks

Tony

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Hi Joseph, it seems that the computer issue that made my machine unbootable was nvda trying to do an update while it was trying to tell me about an add on update. Can add on updates be made manual?

Quite what actually happened is hard to say, but nvda did a restart and when it tried to it locked up the keyboard.
So the only recourse was to use the button but this time instead of  waiting a few seconds and booting into either safe mode or the normal boot it got stuck before this and somebody had to go into the bios and  tell it to reboot manually.

We have since proved this to be the issue twice, so on my installed copy, which is now reinstalled Add on updater has been removed and also I had to manually remove it from the folder in app data/nvda as well as we kept on getting  an error as it said it had a pending update but of course it had not add on updater so it got into a bit of a spin and completely scrambled nvdas keyboard input for no good reason I can deduce. Using the mouse my friend  got  my portable copy running instead then I went in and manually deleted the pending add on updater update and so far, fingers crossed no crashes of nvda with dead keyboard.
Whether this is a specific windows 7  issue or a mismatch with another add on is not really clear, but I'll keep the add on updater in  my portable copy and see if that fixes the issue. I suspect 9 times out of ten, a button shutdown of windows will in fact work but now and again, not. somebody needs to invent a talking bios!

That looks as though it has done the trick. I just installed the latest add on the add on one then done a check for updates This time it told me there were none then gave me the option to close it. I can try a few more times later in the day but think i will get the same result saying there is none and the close button.

Hi Joseph

I also grabbed the latest add on for screen curtain i could not find out where the toogle is to turn the curtain on and off and to check for any thing else to do with it.

It looks as though if say you know your add ons have been updated  then a little after say go to check again it keeps on telling you to wait like it is going in a loop. If there are add ons there they come down pretty quick. Since there is no cancel button i had to restart nvda this was after say 10 minutes or so of it looking for updates. I am sure i have read if there is no updates it tells you but may be wrong.

I just updated the add on to update add ons  and it got the latest.

I read to get the curtain one which i already have i had to go back a second time for it to see it and up date it so i did.

Only thing is it is still looking and i could not really cancel it it went on for quite a few minutes yet all the other add ons which i have were already updated.

I had to restart nvda so it would stop it from looking. Would that also be because the other add on is not up there? or a bug?

Hi everyone,

I’m delighted to announce the immediate release of updates to Add-on Updater and Screen Curtain. Note that these add-ons are proof of concept (prototype) add-ons and should be used to provide feedback to people developing these feature in NVDA Core:

  • Add-on Updater (NVDA Core issue 3208): Joseph Lee
  • Screen Curtain (NVDA Core issue 7857): Leonard de Ruijter/Babbage B.V.

In case of Add-on Updater, today’s build includes work from checkable list (NVDA issue 7491), thus serving as a field test of that issue. If you have any comments on checkable list, please send them to Leonard.

To check for add-on updates:

  1. If you have Add-on Updater installed, go to NVDA menu/Tools/Check for add-on updates.
  2. If you don’t have Add-on Updater, go to community add-ons website and install Add-on Updater.
  3. Due to addition of Screen Curtain in “add-ons under development” category, you’ll need to check for add-on updates a second time to update Screen Curtain.

Changelog:

Add-on Updater:

  • When new add-on updates appear, the first entry will be selected and announced automatically.
  • Added ability to exclude add-ons from being updated. You can configure this by going to NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/Add-on Updater panel. From “do not update add-ons” checkable list box, check add-ons you do not want Add-on Updater to update. This was requested by an add-on author.

Screen Curtain:

  • Added a check to make sure magnification wrapper can be imported.
  • Added an unassigned gesture to toggle screen curtain.
  • Added a toggle menu item in Tools that shows state of Screen Curtain.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

Of an interesting note if you have a newer 4th gen intel or up they don't seem to have this issue but first gen i3s probably do my i5 3rd gen does boot but its under preasure, if the system needs a user profile repair, a good reformat or a really big crash its usually in the summer months.

If it is the same as my old i3 workstation then once it gets cold it will work again I assume anyway it is because it now is.

You're not seriously telling us you are still using 30 year old hard drives?

the sighted person to go into the cmos and set the time etc

You really need to see what the message is. the other thing that usually

one hard drive die on me on a computer in 30 years and they are used

Yes well, Its my first ssd, and I'm suspicious of the new. The machine was only built in 2015, so a battery? Must be a pretty duff battery I have some old xp machines with batteries 10 years old. Cold, no it wasover 30 degrees c here yesterday.
My feeling is a corrupt disc rather than a dead one but we shall see. I'm on this old XP machine with an older copy of nvda Been going since 2007.

If in the end it is decided to reformat I cannot use the backups

that is going to take even longer to rebuild the files.

Basically, this morning I was told an update to an add on was
available and I allowed it to proceed, but when the nvda rebooted the
computer totally locked up.
On starting with the button, it continuously prompts for boot media,
but does not provide a way to enter it. On chatting to the firm that
built it they suggest the bios might be corrupt and I should keep
hitting delete and then set the proper option. which really is not an
option without sighted help.
If this is what it is, it could be the battery, I suppose or it might
be corrupt windows, I have a rescue disc and backups from Sunday last,
but if its a total mess than I have a major job of rebuilding a very
complex lot of software. I'll see you all in the spring!

Re: how to filter brailleoutput

Hi,
Hmmm, I see. Note that this requires looking at braille tables and what not.
Regarding Skype message problem: if you are using the universal app version
of Skype (version 12) and find that braille isn't in sync when it comes to
making messages shorter, do let me know so I can "fix" this for you ("fix"
as in modifying Skype app module that ships with Windows 10 App Essentials,
because I can tell that you are using that add-on due to shortened message
example).
Cheers,
Joseph

In every case the speech filters are useful for audio they are much more
useful for braille.
Why do you filter speech? Because it gets rid of unwanted clutter.
This problem is far worse in braille.

Skype is the immediate cause for my inquiry.
Every incoming message says:

from John Doe, skype message, blah blah blah, sent at 6:23 and 10 seconds
on august 3, 2018

or something about like that.
I can make all that silly extra garbage go away in speech, but not in
braille.
my speech now just says: from John Doe, blah blah.
But I am too deaf to understand John's immortal prose in many cases.
I need braille, but John's words are burried in unwanted junk words.

We concentrated on getting wxPython4, Braille display auto detection and system test framework into 2018.3.

Once 2018.3 is finalized, we will look at getting speech Refactor into NVDA master as soon as we can, so that it will be available in 2018.4.

Subject: [nvda] New speech framework in NVDA

Thanks

Tony
