It isn't a good idea to assume things regarding computers.  See this article. 
 
And note that, this article doesn't apply to XP in some ways.  In XP, the default is not the same as in Windows 7.  XP caches material by default, Windows 7 doesn't.

How do you know?  Maybe you know in the case of a mechanical external hard drive if you hear it make sounds, and they have gotten increasingly quiet over the years, but there is no way to tell with a thumb drive, having no moving parts.

Windows always gives the canned message about removing a  drive but I have never paid attention to that, I know when something is being written to it.

You are saying it will cause problems if you remove the drive while NVDA is running.  I see no reason why problems should be encountered if you unload it first, as discussed in my previous message.

 

As I understood the question, the drive was not trying to be removed while NVDA was running.  NVDA was unloaded, then safely remove hardware was attempted but it always shows the drive shouldn't be removed.  This is because a file remains in use by Windows even if NVDA is removed.  That doesn't mean any information is being sent to the drive except, perhaps, under the condition I specified.

If you are running NVDA from the thumb drive, then disconnecting it
while it is running will cause problems for NVDA, and you will get no
feedback. So yes, closing down the machine and then disconnecting your
drive is, in my opinion, the best course of action.

For me "trust" does mean "taking someone at their word", and if I feel I can't
take them at their word, then I don't trust them.

This is where a third party client comes in handy. Who knows how it’ll all shake out after Twitter’s new rules take place next month, but for now, and for Twitter at least, the cleanest option is a third party client.

I have gotten the message to scan drives even if I safely remove hardware. Windows 8.1 and 10 have always been very picky about that and a scan rarely takes more than a minute or two these days.

If it's a drive I have valuable data on, like key pass databases etc, I will safely remove it. On the other hand I haven't had any problems not clicking this button - common sense is your best friend here - and if files aren't being written or read to or from the drive, you're generally fine. Of course, in this day and age where every single thing requires the internet, something is almost always using the drive for something - windows defender and other antiviruses most prevalently.

You may get away with ignoring such messages and not using Safely Remove hardware most of the time but what about the time when you don't?  These features aren't just placed in Windows because some programmer had nothing to do.  They are placed there for a reason. 

 

You can set parameters regarding external drives so that you never have to use Safely remove Hardware.  I won't go into that here.  But unless you know the parameters are set in that way, I wouldn't take the chance. 

 

How do I know what Joe stranger or Joe friend or public library administrator did, if anything, regarding these settings?

Well, In the main it seems to have no actual impact at all. Its a bit like an sd card I have it keeps on telling me its been disconnected  badly when I plug it in and can it scan it yet it finds no issues with it. I'm note sure if its some logging or just that windows 7 is a little slow at releasing files. I've seen this with the log file even on the installed copy that stops the update always running as the log is locked. Its easy to fix this, by esc and then a relaunch, but I am almost sure its on windows 7 machines with ssd drives for some odd reason.

Incidentally you may find that using a pen copy on windows 10 is not as useful as more of the operating system needs admin access to allow accessibility to work correctly so nvda tries to fall back to older apis and sometimes this is not very  much good.

I expect for example when I start up windows on my systems that windows may choose to not start because it chooses to mangle my profile or just not start meaning I will have to reformat to make everything better.

I have come to terms that when I run anything it may or may not work but usually does.

I have come to terms with changes on the fly which may or may not be something I like and in that reguard try to bypass them if I can or use whatever it is if I need.

To say I enjoy some of it is I don't know.

I used to enjoy windows, now its just another program I have to watch to see if it works, once its working I get on to my tasks then I am done.

I have had this happen on drives with say an update program, mostly these leave their stuff alone.

Firstly, try to grab the drive away from the last op, ie launch a explorer window with the drive scroll to the end, the start, the end again then close it.

If that doesn't work, try to eject it from my computer icon.

If that doesn't work, run a viru scan on the drive or a file on the drive in quick scan mode or whatever sometimes that happens.

Finally, you can always try to copy something off the drive, then try to exit it again.

Force the thing to use the shell and it may work.

As I understood the question, the drive was not trying to be removed while NVDA was running. That doesn't mean any information is being sent to the drive except, perhaps, under the condition I specified.

Whenever you plug in a drive, you get the message to scan it.

Once you do scan it, it is good for a time, or unless you change the drive label.

That is one I escape out of all the time.

You can set parameters regarding external drives so that you never have to use Safely remove Hardware.  I won't go into that here.  But unless you know the parameters are set in that way, I wouldn't take the chance. 

 

How do I know what Joe stranger or Joe friend or public library administrator did, if anything, regarding these settings?

As I understood the question, the drive was not trying to be removed while NVDA was running.  NVDA was unloaded, then safely remove hardware was attempted but it always shows the drive shouldn't be removed.  This is because a file remains in use by Windows even if NVDA is removed.  That doesn't mean any information is being sent to the drive except, perhaps, under the condition I specified.

If you are running NVDA from the thumb drive, then disconnecting it
while it is running will cause problems for NVDA, and you will get no
feedback. So yes, closing down the machine and then disconnecting your

Two Skype UWP questions.

Hi all. Two quick questions about Skype UWP with NVDA.


1. How can I see when a message was sent? If I highlight a message with the arrow keys and use NVDA-numpad 2 and then I think object nav to the right, I see a time, but not a date. Can I see both?


2. Is there an easy way to get to the list of messages? Today I sent a message, and then the person replied. NVDA said something like "skype text input", and I could see the person I was chatting with, make a call, make a video call, and so on, but I couldn't actually see their messages. I had to hit alt-1, arrow to another conversation, and then arrow back to them. Then I was able to tab to the list and hit end and arrow up through their messages. There's surely a simpler way to do this?

Correct. There is not, but the answer has since been provided. So problem solved. This should of course be included in Skype’s info, but for one reason or another, it is not. Either way, the answer is once again, control plus shift plus P. I found this out by playing with the program and doing some test calls after my original query got back all sorts of outdated or irrelevant info. I have my mail client set to threaded view, which I think should be the default for any of them. Drives me crazy when other programs don't conform to threaded view and create a completely separate one with the same subject.

Seems like most sighted folk on the lists I'm on seem to like it the way it does not default to.
That is, they seem to like the response at the bottom, or if multiple answers, then by separating the original messages with their responses after each.
Personally, I hate reading through the quoted original message, as when I'm following a thread, I rarely need to read the quoted message, and when I do, I would rather read it after the reply.
