Will the improvements for Zoom make it into 2018.3? I hope they do? I can now use NVDA for one more thing I couldn't use it for previously, in a more perfect way.

I also got the big update yesterday. I didn’t try installing any other add ons. I’ll have to try to see if they brake.

Remote Support wxPython 4 third-party hotfix for July 2018 released

Hi all,

July 2018 version of Remote Support add-on (third-party hotfix for compatibility with wxPython 4) is now up:

https://www.josephsl.net/files/nvdaaddons/remote-2.1wxPy4-1807.nvda-addon

This build includes a change pushed by Leonard regarding possible UI message issue while controlling a remote computer.

P.S. I’m also working on catching deprecation warnings raised by wxPython 4 and changing the affected code in NVDA Core. In case of Remote Support add-on, it calls “wx.Menu.RemoveItem”, which is deprecated. For maximum compatibility, I recommend using conditionals to call the appropriate method based on wxPython release (wx.Menu.Remove on wxPython 4, wx.Menu.RemoveItem in earlier versions).

Cheers,

Joseph

wxPython 4 compatible add-on releases: Unicode Braille Input 2.9, Golden Cursor 3.1, SystrayList 2.4 #addonrelease

Hi all,

The following add-ons are getting new updates today, making them compatible with wxPython 4 and earlier NVDA releases:

  • Golden Cursor 3.1
  • SystrayList 2.4
  • -Unicode Braille Input 2.9

All of these can be found at the community add-ons website at https://addons.nvda-project.org.

There is one more add-on that has been updated (Remote Support add-on hotfix), and that’s next.

Cheers,

Joseph

Joseph Lee's add-ons: all compatible with wxPython 4 with additional notes for SPL, WinTenApps and others

Hi all,

An update on various add-ons I’m maintaining regarding their compatibility with wxPython 4 (consequently, NVDA 2018.3):

  • Enhanced Touch Gestures: compatible with wxPython 4. Version 18.10 will require NVDA 2018.3.
  • Golden Cursor: compatible with wxPython 4. Small refinements will be made in upcoming 3.2 release.
  • StationPlaylist Studio: compatible with wxPython 4. Version 18.09 (LTS) will require NVDA 2018.3.
  • SystrayList: compatible with wxPython 4.
  • Unicode Braille Input: compatible with wxPython 4. Small refinements will be done as part of 2.9 release.
  • Windows 10 App Essentials: compatible with wxPython 4. Version 18.10 will require NVDA 2018.3.

Add-ons not listed are those that does not use wxPython.

Notes for certain add-ons:

StationPlaylist Studio: version 18.09 is designated 2018 LTS. This long-term support release is the last version to support Studio 5.10, based on old assumptions, and is the last release series to be powered by Python 2. This series also requires NVDA 2018.3 or later for two reasons: introduction of multi-page add-on settings, and GUI code will be based on wxPython 4. The sunset date (end of life) for version 18.09.x LTS is January 1, 2020, the same sunset date as Python 2, and no support extensions will be granted unless really critical issues emerge on a case by case basis.

Golden Cursor: version 3.x will continue to support NVDA 2017.3 or later in order to provide long-term support for Windows XP users. This will change with generation 4 (4.0 and beyond), as that generation will be Python 3 based, hence dropping support for Python 2 based NVDA releases. One or two minor features from 4.0 will make it to a 3.x release, but that won’t happen for a while.

Windows 10 App Essentials: as I noted a few days ago, version 18.10 and later will require NVDA 2018.3 or later for reasons on top of wxPython 4. Those running NVDA alpha (master) snapshots are already seeing what I mean with pilot builds of this add-on.

Cheers,

Joseph

We have had reports before on here that many things switch on auto but nvda does not. I suspect this might be on purpose as if for instance you are outputting music you would not want the speech to always be output.
Can anyone comment?

As was already stated its windows+spacebar to switch language
This is assuming you have two or more language packs installed in windows 10
If you only have one language pack installed this of course will do nothing

This post mentions switching keyboard language in Win10 being easy. It's posted on a thread about something else, though, and I have not seen a thread with subject line regarding keyboard language switching.

So, I am wondering--
How does someone switch keyboard language (in Win10 or otherwise)?
It would be useful to know this so that one could switch back if an unintended change was made.

Thanks!

I am a little worried though that switching keyboard languages is so easy to
do in windows 10, this looks like a disaster for some coming along. Its not
that its not easy to fix, but that many people do not know it can occur this
way since it seems a little too simple and is not what has been happening in
windows before.

Edited

You actually brought up the point that I forgot to bring up in my last message lol.
Anyways, I'm not sure as well; and I think the lack of keyboard shortcuts is probably my biggest complaints about the new Skype (I remember someone posted a link to a list of Skype keyboard shortcuts somewhere, but can't remember exactly where it is or whether it's for Skype 7 or 8).
Update: Here's the official list of Skype 8 hotkeys: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12025/what-are-hotkeys-and-how-do-i-use-them-in-skype

Re: VFO not complimentary about NVDA

As a business student, I wonder how viable as a business model it would be if I was to set up a firm dedicated to providing NVDA tech support and consultant for organizations.
Of course, any tech support staff I hired would need to undergo NVDA training and would eventually need to be certified as experts by Nvaccess.

Re: possible eloquence solution

Well I do have a totally useless partly dropped dead rusting keynote gold 1850 that will never see the light of day ever again!

If someone wants this and can pay me the shipping cash for the entire crappyness go ahead and get that card out if you think you can extract it.

All I ask is a mention in previding the card in the credits, especially if its going to be free ofcause if humanware object to this then the only thing I would charge would be something like 10 bucks for the us language version which is all I have.

the only thing I can think of that may allow a modern sapi5 keynote gold software to be built, would be if someone has a brailleNote apex or brailleNote classic and could extract the firmware, with an eProm chip extractor, possibly.

Hi Brian

I would agree if standards were followed and stuff labeled etc
correctly. I got told if it was done correctly the developers would not
have to do as much on there side but sadly they do to make stuff work/

At a place in in Australia where a friend of mine worked he had control
over the buying of software etc for the state.

They also had blind workers there and basically what they would do is
say the software has to be fully accessible with adaptive tech more
along the line of screen readers or we will not purchase your software
until it is done. Also if they come across problems it must be fixed.

I guess also people who make software or web sites etc do not realize if
they do not label stuff this will be the result if you do not with a
person say using a screen reader. for example search button  or just the
word button you get what i mean.

Yes, I think it would be useful for the NvAccess site to have a list
of available scripters and their locations, and then state agencies
would have a resource to contact for such things.
I work for a state agency, and I hate it when people bash state
agencies without knowing how things work for such things.
Granted, some staff who don't use screenreaders can't possibly
remember all the solutions, although they should, they don't, so they
think only of the one solution that is most common.
But I have brought up the topic of NVDA as a solution in the
workplace, and then the issue of scripting comes up.
