Good to know. The KNFB Reader demo didn't look all that promising. So I'll have to investigate this. Thank you for that.

Re: Scanner / OCR recommendation

Evening, or at least here in New England it is.

I have been using Abby FineReader for years. It is my original version 11 and it is running well under Windows 10. Right now my scanner is part of my Cannon printer, and though a one page at a time model, it serves very well. Abby is remarkably accurate and will scan to a wide variety of formats including Word, Excel and Epic.

One of the little things I like about it is that when installed, it adds itself to the context menu. Find a PDF file , hit the context key, arrow down to Abby and press the right arrow to view the options of formats you can convert to. Press the enter key and Abby opens and converts the file and then opens it in the correct app.

The only change I would make right now is to move to a scanner with a document feeder. I am also serious about moving up several generations of Abby.

Honestly I owe Abby the purchase of a newer version. Over the years with several major crashes, support has been quick and clear and restoration was very simple.

Good luck finding a solution that works, does not require fifty key presses and most important does not cost too much. I am a firm believer in an application that does a single job, but does it very well.

As for OCR on an iPad, if you have not tried Seeing AI, it is quite  a program, with a variety of  functions and if is free on the Appstore. Interestingly it was developed and is well maintained by Microsoft.

Disclaimer here: I do not work for Abby nor do I sell any of their products. Feel free to contact me off list if I can be of help, or just ask questions here.

Hi everyone,

I've got a query about a standalone scanner.  Is the OCR software which comes with any of the scanners such as Epson or Canon accessible (or even have an accessible Word plugin), or which third-party OCR would be worth considering?

I've personally used Omnipage and Abbyy in the past, and also had a scanner with an OCR plugin for Word that worked well, even though the main software wasn't great, but I haven't looked at anything recently to recommend.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Yes, I'd thought about that. That's the reason I didn't get one of the ones that works on the phone. If you send it for processing, who knows what happens to your image? Getting a good scan with a phone camera takes a bit of work too, I have found, though I can make it work. The last time I tried OCR though, which was the built-in Windows 10 one, on a scanned PDF, it made a complete mess of the output.

Re: Scanner / OCR recommendation

I would recommend standalone scanning solutions for privacy issues

Such items as read easy move do a good job
You can use your phone with its apps for things that are not private
Because who knows if a computer is connected to the Internet how the software actually works
I mean does it send it to a remote server for processing for example
And then what happens to the image there
Just my thoughts regards Ian

Re: still not hearing ctrl key and some other keys

Blee Blat <bleeblat@...>

Yes, keyboard help is really useful, even if you know your keyboard well. They put keys on laptop keyboards in weird places and that can really mess things up. It's also a quick typing tutor if you're trying to learn a new keyboard layout. I used it for that purpose once.

Re: still not hearing ctrl key and some other keys

Quentin Christensen

If you want to use it to check whether keys are working or find out what keys are on a new keyboard, press NVDA+1 (number row 1) to turn input help on.  Then it will read every key you press without doing anything, so you can test what different keys are or whether they work.

Once finished, press NVDA+1 again to turn input help off.

Re speak command keys, you can also toggle this with NVDA+4 (again 4 on the number row).

Kind regards

Quentin.

I think we have been down these roads already. Without some kind of hands

on, its hard to advise unless somebody else has the exact same issue,
which

was why I asked about avast, as I was not aware till the other day how

protective that anti virus is.

It seems that often simple uninstall may well make it seem to be gone but

its often left running routines in a hidden partition unseen by the task

manager which makes deletion of the folder impossible. Also modification
of

certain registry entries appears to be impossible also, so if some have

become deregistered, and avast or a similar program is on the machine or
has

been re registering them may not work. Indeed on the machine I had like
this

any attempt to even compact the registry resulted in windows restarting.

it of course then loaded back the un modified last known good copy.

When you get very rare events such as this one, you really do need
somebody

experienced on site.

Its hard to ask the right questions otherwise I find.

This can be especially pertinent if the user has no interest in the under

the hood stuff of computers and hence does not know how to look at some

aspects of what you ask. Not saying this its the case here, but this is

often when tech folk resort to a reformat and re install,we hen its
probably

not required. Brian

Check audio ducking in nvda as well as windows

Also check the audio output device is correct in nvda

Huh. Very annoying.

I know it’s sometimes annoying advice, but have you tried reinstalling the programme?

I can certainly verify that my 1.85 works fine on Windows 10. I press f9 and it rips with no complaints. However, there’s that unfortunate bundled software you don’t want, which you’ll have to get around, if you want to install it. It can be done though. As stated in a previous message, I wasn’t aware of it at first and thought something had frozen. I ended up unintentionally saying “yes” to all that stuff, and in the end used malwarebytes to help get rid of it. Obviously, not a really desirable solution.
