Instead of pressing the command key individually try a key combination like ctrl+A

See what happens then

I have had some of these same issues. I can't even see my context menu
in windows explorer. Certain apps dont let me read menus like goldwave
and reaper. I tried registering a couple of dll files I thought could
have broke that fixed nothing. Also tried using older and the latest
build of NVDA.

I think we have been down these roads already. Without some kind of hands

on, its hard to advise unless somebody else has the exact same issue,
which

was why I asked about avast, as I was not aware till the other day how

protective that anti virus is.

It seems that often simple uninstall may well make it seem to be gone but

its often left running routines in a hidden partition unseen by the task

manager which makes deletion of the folder impossible. Also modification
of

certain registry entries appears to be impossible also, so if some have

become deregistered, and avast or a similar program is on the machine or
has

been re registering them may not work. Indeed on the machine I had like
this

any attempt to even compact the registry resulted in windows restarting.

it of course then loaded back the un modified last known good copy.

When you get very rare events such as this one, you really do need
somebody

experienced on site.

Its hard to ask the right questions otherwise I find.

This can be especially pertinent if the user has no interest in the under

the hood stuff of computers and hence does not know how to look at some

aspects of what you ask. Not saying this its the case here, but this is

often when tech folk resort to a reformat and re install,we hen its
probably

not required. Brian

Just a couple of things to check...

Are you just running nvda? Or do you have other screen readers running at

the same time, even on silent mode?

Check audio ducking in nvda as well as windows

Also check the audio output device is correct in nvda

And of course you have tried other synths as well?? Haven’t you?

Re: question

If you explain what you did, we might find out what the problem is.  Don't use this procedure while the podcast is playing.  Do it when you are just on the page.

F6, then control c, then control f6 to return to the page.  Then go the the e-mail message you are writing and paste with control v.  If you try this and it doesn't work, try the same thing on another site and see if it doesn't work.  Which screen-reader are you using?  If it doesn't work, this may either be because of user error or a problem with Windows or your screen-reader.  At this point, we have no way to make a guess or try to find out.

I'm not participating in the thread as a moderator.  Unless I state that I'm speaking as a moderator or I send a message that is clearly a moderation message, I'm participating as a member.

I didn’t look at the site because I was waiting for the full address.  I could have looked but I expect a certain amount of effort from the person asking for help.

If you visit the site and give actuall instructions from that page, finding the podcast and copying it’s URL then maybe having a look at the site as a whole, perhaps you may change your opinion, you are a moderator, so shoot me down in flames, I am just defending someone who may not have the skills to even follow your instructions.

Some of the replies to this person have, in my humble opinion, been rather terse and maybe even rude. Maybe I am in a minority of one, so what’s new?

Hello,

Of course it would have been easier if we had the URL in the first
place, but, having visited the website, for a site perporting to be for
blind people, it is not very blind friendly, I think our friend who
first asked the question did very well to actually get the file to play.
All the suggestions have had their merits, but I think that it will be
more straightforward to just get it playing and then use an audio editor
to record it in real time.
Perhaps someone will look at the site and make it more blind friendly,
now that we have the site, step by step instructions would be helpful
for downloading an MP3 file, because I couldn't do this, why they are
buried deep in the site is beyond me.
finally, we should remember that not everyone is a wizz kid with
computers, including myself, surely this list is to help those who are
still learning, perhaps learning the basics, even if it is frustrating
at times. Let's hope we haven't put our friend off from asking questions
in future.

And the next time you want to keep something, you won't know how.  I would advise getting the very simple program I discussed here, virtual recorder, and trying it.  There is a specific version I would advise using.  I'll send information if you ask.

and if you ever are corresponding with someone and want to send them a link to an article, a product, or whatever the case, you evidently won't know how.  This is a fundamental Internet skill.  I'm not particularly concerned with you saving this particular podcast unless you are, but there are certain skills and knowledge you are not learning as a result of no longer pursuing the matter.  The Internet address copy and paste knowledge is important in general.  Recording using a program like Virtual Recorder is important if you want to record material that can't be saved.

The problem is that we don't know what you are trying to download, and the
instructions for how to download it may be different depending on what it
is.

Show us a URL for the podcast, or at least for a page containing a link to
it, and we can take a look for ourselves to try and help you.

Until you show us the specific thing you want to download, we're just
guessing at the best way to do it, and that's both inefficient and
potentially unhelpful.

I know it’s sometimes annoying advice, but have you tried reinstalling the programme?

I can certainly verify that my 1.85 works fine on Windows 10. I press f9 and it rips with no complaints. However, there’s that unfortunate bundled software you don’t want, which you’ll have to get around, if you want to install it. It can be done though. As stated in a previous message, I wasn’t aware of it at first and thought something had frozen. I ended up unintentionally saying “yes” to all that stuff, and in the end used malwarebytes to help get rid of it. Obviously, not a really desirable solution.

It seems to run, but if I try to rip anything, it just sits there like a dummy and does nothing at all.  It just won't work.  No error messages or anything to help figure out what's going on.

Maybe it would help if you described exactly what happens when you try to run the program?

Lucky you!  I had been using 1.70 of CDex on Win XP and then Win 7 but with Win 10, it just won't work.  I tried compatibility mode and told it the last version it worked in with was Win 7 but it still won't work here.  How did you hold your mouth to coax your machine to run this?  I'd sure like to know how to do it.

I didn't say the person should copy the address of the podcast itself.  I said he should copy the address of the page he is working on.  He's already on the page and I gave step-by-step instructions on how to do it.  There was no response, not even a message asking for help or saying he didn't understand the instructions.

Have you actually looked at this webpage? I do use the internet and have much to learn, but this particular site is, as I said, not very blind friendly.

And because everyone isn't a whizzkid, I explained, giving every step, how to copy an address from a web page and paste it into the message.  There has been no response to my message.  This isn't just a skil that is important in instances like this.  It is important when you want to send something to someone in an e-mail message, such as a page with an article you want them to read.  It is a fundamental skill of Internet use.  There has been no response to my message.  When three people ask you for information and one of them gives a detailed step-by-step description of how to do it and when there is no response, I refuse to help further until some indication is given that the person is willing to learn how to provide information properly.  If this indication is given, if the person does it or says he doesn't understand how to do something I wrote, some sort of meaningful response, then I'll be happy to help again.  But not until then.  Part of asking for help is learning the proper way to provide information if you don't know how.

Perhaps someone will look at the site and make it more blind friendly,
now that we have the site, step by step instructions would be helpful
for downloading an MP3 file, because I couldn't do this, why they are
buried deep in the site is beyond me.
finally, we should remember that not everyone is a wizz kid with
computers, including myself, surely this list is to help those who are
still learning, perhaps learning the basics, even if it is frustrating
at times. Let's hope we haven't put our friend off from asking questions
in future.

I have found it intensely frustrating to see you answer every request

people have told you this is not sufficiently clear or specific.

If that really is the site Anthony's talking about (I await his confirmation), then there are MP3 URLs embedded in the source code of the podcast pages, and those URLs can be downloaded as offline-playable MP3s.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a standard pattern for converting a podcast page URL to the corresponding MP3 download URL, but it's certainly possible to download the podcasts.

I found the URLs by starting from a page with the player on it, pressing the Windows Context key (without any link focused) and then selecting "View Page Info" from the context menu which appears. If you then move one icon to the right (from "General" to "Media"), you get a list of all the media links on the page, and one of them is the downloadable MP3.

I hope that helps,

Antony.

Just giving the name without a suffix such as org or com with the

user has no idea whether the podcast is on the home page or some
other page. If you don't know how to copy an address from the

Hello,

The original poster didn't tell us if it was a file he wanted to download or if it was just a streaming site. I assumed that he wanted to actually download it to his hard drive.

Hello,

Of course it would have been easier if we had the URL in the first place, but, having visited the website, for a site perporting to be for blind people, it is not very blind friendly, I think our friend who first asked the question did very well to actually get the file to play.
All the suggestions have had their merits, but I think that it will be more straightforward to just get it playing and then use an audio editor to record it in real time.
Perhaps someone will look at the site and make it more blind friendly, now that we have the site, step by step instructions would be helpful for downloading an MP3 file, because I couldn't do this, why they are buried deep in the site is beyond me.
finally, we should remember that not everyone is a wizz kid with computers, including myself, surely this list is to help those who are still learning, perhaps learning the basics, even if it is frustrating at times. Let's hope we haven't put our friend off from asking questions in future.

Best Regards, Jim.

Do you realise how much easier it would have been for us to help you if you had simply told us the address of the page you are trying to download the podcast from?

I have found it intensely frustrating to see you answer every request for the address of the page with "It is the website of ncbi" or similar, even after people have told you this is not sufficiently clear or specific.

If that really is the site Anthony's talking about (I await his
confirmation), then there are MP3 URLs embedded in the source code of
the podcast pages, and those URLs can be downloaded as
offline-playable MP3s.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a standard pattern for
converting a podcast page URL to the corresponding MP3 download URL,
but it's certainly possible to download the podcasts.

I found the URLs by starting from a page with the player on it,
pressing the Windows Context key (without any link focused) and then
selecting "View Page Info" from the context menu which appears. If
you then move one icon to the right (from "General" to "Media"), you
get a list of all the media links on the page, and one of them is the
downloadable MP3.

I hope that helps,

Antony.

Now this is interesting. Is yours one of the versions of Outlook that
uses
Word as its editor?
I get this all the time in word. I have a feeling its nvda hooking into
something making it think something has changed, for example. I create a
word document, I save it, I then go to exit word and it says the text
has
changed do I want to save it again so to speak. Not every time, but
enough
to be annoying.

Hi, everyone,

Yesterday and today I noticed something different in outlook. When I
hit
escape to get out of a message, I get a message saying that the body of
the
message has changed and do I want to save it. I've never seen this
before.
Is there something I might need to change in either outlook or NVDA?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: Teething Trouble

Hi Wilco,

Re punctuation, there are two different things here.  For writing, like you are asking about, as long as you have "Speak typed characters" on, NVDA should read whatever character you type.  You can toggle this setting either by pressing NVDA+2 (on the number row) or from the keyboard settings dialog with NVDA+control+k.  If you have speak typed Words set on (NVDA+3 or from the keyboard settings), when you press a full stop to end a sentence, NVDA will read the last word, and then if you haven't moved, it will read the full stop (or question mark etc).

For reading, you can adjust punctuation on the fly with NVDA+p.  You can also change it in the voice settings in NVDA's preferences by pressing either NVDA+control+v to go to that screen directly, or from the NVDA menu with NVDA+n then P for preferences then V for Voice settings.  There are four options, "None", "some", "most" or "all".   Note that when typing, NVDA will read typed characters (if speak typed characters is on) regardless of the punctuation level set.  Also with reading, and maybe this will help with your first question as well, is you can adjust what document formatting NVDA reads.  So for instance, you can set whether NVDA reports the colour and size of text, when you enter a table or change to a heading.  NVDA has a configuration profiles feature which lets you set these options individually for different programs.  So you might have different options read in Outlook vs Word vs Firefox for instance.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi Folks,

I’m new to NVDA, just trialling it for a bit to see how it measures up vs JAWS. I have a few queries that I’m hoping more experienced users might be able to help me out with.

1. Verbosity. This thing talks a lot, and doesn’t seem to have a global verbosity setting, is this right? In my outlook inbox for example, every time I cursor through my emails NVDA will announce those annoying grouping headings like ‘today’, ‘yesterday’ etc. JAWS glides straight past those without piping up, which does make for a smoother experience. Any thoughts?

2. It’s a minor problem, but NVDA doesn’t seem to announce punctuation when I am typing. I know you can change how it reads punctuation as you navigate, but how about when it comes to text entry? there’s just something unnerving about not hearing that you’ve remembered to slap a full stop on the end of your sentence.

3. The Eloquence for NVDA voice from Code Factory seems a bit buggy. It makes a weird popping and crackling sound all the time. The Vocaliser addon doesn’t seem to do it, but Eloquence is my weapon of choice. I’m only using the 7 day trial at the mo so that I can assess the synth alongside NVDA itself, but the crackling noises it makes are pretty annoying TBF.

Any thoughts on any of this would be most welcome, thanks.
