I discussed the file type briefly but my main point is that using the context menu will allow you to save files on some sites and not on others.  this is not related to the file type, it's how the site is constructed.

We don't know, but my guess is that, in this case, Internet Explorer is being used and the file opens in Windows Media player, hence the question of how to save from there.

In the context of other browsers, not the archaic Internet Explorer, the file is played in the browser when you press enter on the link.  If you are on a site where save target as or equivalent doesn't work, you need to know that you can use the command control s while the file is playing, and save it while in the browser in that way.

Of course, that presupposes that you are dealing with an actual file that is playing from the site as a file, and not a stream.  The stream plays a little of a file and then refreshes the buffer in the browser or player but the entire file is never available.  Just a little bit ahead of where you are listening.  It can't be saved because it is a stream, not a file playing as a file from the web site.  Since this is called a podcast in the question, the odds are that it is an actual file being played from the web site, not a stream as I am using the word.

If you  read my message again, I do say, “We don’t know what kind of file it is so can’t be specific”,

It’s worth a try anyway, if the original questioner could say exactly what podcast  is to be downloaded, that would be better.

As you rightly say, that is why you asked questions.

That is one way you can save many files.  But it is important to know other ways as well.  Some sites don't support downloading files in that way.  That's why I asked questions such as whether the file opens in Windows media Player.

Hello,

Pressing enter on the link will probably open it, if it’s to be downloaded, try the context menu, [key to the left of the right control key on a standard keyboard], you get options including maybe “save as” or “save target as”, this should bring up the normal save as dialogue and the file can be saved to a folder, from there it cvan be opened in a program such as Windows media player.

We don’t know what kindof file it is so can’t be specific, I hope this helps and good luck.

But when you press enter on the link, what happens?  Does it play In Media Player?  I believe someone described how to download a file such as a podcast playing in Windows Media Player.  But before that method is of any use to you, does the file open in the player?

Re: Bug in espeak ng used in NVDA Next

Simon Eigeldinger

tough. tough.
well let's hope there isn't something lurking on your system.
all have moved away from xp now and to support old code isn't much appreciated by many programmers.

visual studio 2017 also support xp if you install the xp support feature.
though even many libs don't support xp anymore so that isn't all that easy in the future.
that said when firefox 52 runs out with their esr program for firefox 52 then firefox also might stop working because the certificates and crypto libs it comes with will be outdated after a few months.

i don't know if espeak ng can be built on xp.
haven't tried that how low that can be compiled.

but good luck if you want to try it..

Greetings,
Simon

Am 25.02.2018 um 05:34 schrieb zahra:

does visual studio 2015 supports xp?
because some versions of nvda which are built with this program, run
on xp and the last supported version on xp is 2017.3.
i dont trust any antivirus and security programs and never use them to
become worried in this regard that they dont support xp anymore!

Hi all,

I wholeheartedly want to say sorry.
If its the issue you are describing.

On the other hand if its possible there needs a way to go forward though.
Because Win XP is nowadays pretty difficult to be used because of many
software aren't supported anymore.
also antivirus, mail and browsers aren't running anymore on xp.
i don't know if Firefox ESR still runs on XP though it is still on the
52 branch so it might.

I also don't know if linux would be an alternative.

unfortunately espeak ng just starts with win 8.1
i also would be happy if it would work on win xp or 7.
though 7 might work.
i also don't know why they are using the win 8.1 sdk to build it.

i don't know if the voice data of espeak ng can be moved to espeak
though that might break the whole thing or no audio would come out of it.

Simon

What version of eSpeak-NG are you using?  Looking at:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/releases indicates that the

Hello:

LibreOffice is not very accessible with screen readers.

Apache OpenOffice works OK with NVDA. It may not be perfect. But! At least in my experience it's better than LibreOffice!

Appearantly none of the open source office suites are very interested in accessibility for the blind! They will not even make an attempt to have a dialog with screen reader developers to see how the can improve their software so that the blind can have better access to the software!

At least for selfish reasons Microsoft has worked with screen reader developers to make MS Office accessible for screen reader users.

More/many blind screen reader users really need to demand from open source office suites developers to provide great accessibility for the blind!

I'm so very sorry! That i've not been of much help to you! but, I've had a very bad experience with LibreOffice in particular, and, with open source/freeware office suites as a whole!

I really do hope that everyone who reads this will take the time to send very nice/polite emails to LibreOffice telling them that blind people really want to use their software and if they make it accessible. Blind people are very loyal to those who develop blind friendly software!!!

I already explained it.  If you know how to use a standard save as dialog, you can save with this dialog.  See my message in this message, quoted below yours.

Then, if I didn't suggest this yet, try the following:

When the file starts to play, issue the command control s.  If my recollection is correct, a save as dialog will come up and you would be able to save the file as you would in any standard save as dialog.  I believe that when you start to save the file, a dialog opens that shows things like the estimated time to completion.

If that doesn't work, the file probably isn't being presented in a way that it can be saved.

Another option is to record the file as it plays.  You can let us know if you want to do that.

If all else fails and as a last resort, find your file in the browser and focus on it,open an audio editor such as Sound forge, Goldwave or audacity and start it recording, alt and tab back to your file and press enter, let it finish and then go back to the audio editor and stop it, you can then save this file in whatever format you want.

You must make sure that the audio editor is set to accept input from the internet.

Perhaps a bit long winded, but it will always work and I have done it on many occasions.

Re: question

The problem is that we don't know what you are trying to download, and the
instructions for how to download it may be different depending on what it is.

Show us a URL for the podcast, or at least for a page containing a link to it,
and we can take a look for ourselves to try and help you.

Until you show us the specific thing you want to download, we're just guessing
at the best way to do it, and that's both inefficient and potentially unhelpful.

something with NVDA.

It now occurs to me that this began to happen for me when I was running
betas a couple of weeks ago, and this behaviour has crept into the NVDA RC1
build. It is an NVDA bug that is worth reporting. Perhaps the Outlook
message is somehow being modified. This doesn't happen when an alternate
screenreader is tested. Note that you need to navigate past the first line
of the message. Happy to report this if nobody has done so.

But when you press enter on the link, what happens? Does it play In Media
Player? I believe someone described how to download a file such as a
podcast playing in Windows Media Player. But before that method is of any
use to you, does the file open in the player?

How are you getting to the podcast in the first place? Is it playing in
Media Player?

Ok thanks gene for your help.

Internet Explorer, which is probably being used, has a feature that, if on, will play MP3 files as they are downloaded to a temporary location, in Windows Media Player.  I specified MP3 files because I know the feature will cause those to play.  I don't know if  it will cause other filetypes to play.  Of course, some sites instruct browsers to play files in the default player or the player specified for that purpose in browser settings.  They aren't necessarily downloaded as full files, but are streamed, as I discussed before.

While we don't know, I think the most likely thing that is occurring is that the file is playing as it is downloaded into a temporary location.  And of course if you let it play, it will play to the end although, on a system faster than dial-up, the file will have finished downloading long before play ends.  One way to find out if this is happening is to try to save the file from within Windows Media Player, as I described in an earlier message.

But you could easily play it in any media player. You need to tell us what
file type it is.
Some are playlist files, ie the playlist is downloaded and this has the
address in it of the file and its type.

I tried using the new windows 10 app and there are still unlabeled buttons. And none of the check boxes anounce themselves so I may go back to BlindSpot. I'm honestly shocked they made some aspects of the program accessible. How in the world did that happen? LOL! Someone suggested I just use their mobile app. I still use a flip phone! I perfer to use my laptop and desktop for, well, everything else. I'm old school, I guess. There are active feature suggestions popping up so someone is working on it, somewhere! LOL.
