that's rather strange, because i've the same braille display.
here it works just fine.
are you sure, there is no problem with the cable or connectors or with the display itself?
i'll search for a tool, to test if all is working correctly.
and when you plug in the display on the computer, is there a sound as usual?
if not, there is realy something wrong.

Hi

You can still use the old shortcut to get into the voice settings it is the ctrl key + nvda key + the letter V.

When the dialogue comes up with the settings just tab down to rate it is a slider use the right arrow key to speed up and the left to slow down. Make sure the settings are applied and ok to save the settings.

It can also be done through the synths rings i think it is called. Use the nvda key +ctrl key + the up arrow key to speed up nvda or the same keys except use the down arrow key while holding those keys to slow nvda down.

If you want to say change voices etc use the same keys nvda key + ctrl key + either left or right arrow keys to go between the different sections there..

If you want to ajust any of them say the varient to another while on it same keys plus either up or down arrrow keys to go betwen them while still holding those other 2 keys ctrl + nvda key.

I am greatful for any help with these items.

I have a new computer running Windows 8.1 and have downloaded NDVA several times and the Windows sapi5 voyce will not showup.  I also can not seem to find it in my windows.

I have also downloaded  2 of the free voices from the NDVA site and properly used the manage apps to install them and they will not appear in the list of synthesizers, as a matter of fact the ESpeak does not appear either.

Finally the menus have completely changed from just a week ago, because I had downloaded NDVA for another person and the menus completely different? Any thoughts?  Thanks so much

If you are getting rich text messages, there is no easy keyboard way of getting to the attachment.

the standard shift tab from the message body will not work in rich text
messages. note, this is not normally the case unless you are working in
an organization with an exchange server. if you get all your messages
in html, this isn't really a thing as you can shift tab from the body to
get to the attachment.

People here love rich text messages and it is a head ache to get to
attachments.

Brian.

Not sure that will work. I have noticed that for no good reason some
filenames in most Microsoft mail software get skipped when trying to
actually get to them to either view or save them. it even happens in Outlook
Express.

It would be interesting to find out whether other attachments show up and
save normally.
Not sure if its nvda or the way microsoft make the focus go to the right
place.

Hello Rosemarie,

One way to save an attachment is:
Get into the body of the message,
arrow up to the top of the message,
shift tab once or more times until you reach the attachments field,
type control + a to select all the attachments,
hit control + c to copy all the selected attachments,
then open file explorer and go to the place you want to save the formerly
attached file and hit control + v to paste the file.

Any of you use the Speech History AddOn, by which via Shift+f11&F12 you cycle between NVDA prompts, after which with f12 the one you're on copies to the Clipboard? OK I can't seem to understand in what order the speech history is: I now go to the NVDA AddOns Manager, wanting to copy info for the Emogins AddON; as soon as NVDA finishes reading the info, I press f12 but another thing is cpoied! So what's the trick what would I do to ensure that the last NVDA promtp that NVDA just said is the one that copies upon invoking the f12 as before? Running latest NVDA2018.2.1 with Windows7. Thanks for info.

Re: Problem connecting a Hims Braillesense to NVDA

Ok, Michelle, forgive me for asking a few dumb questions here, but:
1) Have you tried another cable? It could be the cable's bad.
2) Have you tried another port? Same applies, &/or there could be an
incompatibility.
3) Have you tried resetting the BrailleSense? Sometimes these problems
go away w/a reset.

Just thinking out loud, the advice is likely worth what you paid for it.

It's probably not your decision, and I don't know how much influence you have over the process, but just for general reference, if this database is going to be used by multiple people simultaneously, Microsoft Access is *not* the program to be used for this, since it doesn't do well with such usage.  Of course, if it's just something that will be posted for others to grab a copy when needed, then that doesn't apply, and the use is just fine, but just be aware of that before trying to build a whole subdepartment on such a system, it won't go well.

I use the cygwin file system, and the ssh that is built into the cygwin file system.  I simply installed cygwin, and in the process, also installed all of it's available programs, mostly because it was too much trouble to figure out what was check and what wasn't, then after all ws said and done, I had a completely working cygwin environment, which (btw) isn't required to run the installed programs.  Once cygwin is installed, you don't actually have to run cygwin in order to run the programs from it.  I just open a command prompt, and type ssh user@server, and all works well.  It's true there is no scrollback, which is sometimes important, but if you just need access, it works just fine.

Microsoft significantly improved the accessibility of the console in recent
versions of Windows 10. If these improvements are valuable to you, you can
probably make a case to your employer for a Windows 10 machine.

In the past I used a Linux box with a self installed Debian and a
virtualized Windows 7. That was the perfekt working enviroment for the
tasks I have todo in my daily work.
Which virtualization tool did you run on the Linux host? I'm considering doing
the same, or at least experimenting a little. I also need to find out how to
license Microsoft Windows to run on a virtual machine.

I've used KVM to virtualize a Linux guest before, but I haven't tried running
Windows in a VM.

I would expect NVDA to work, although the braille display would create some
issues even if the USB interface can be forwarded to the guest.

per haps for other screenreaders but not with nvda.
put the usb connector into the computer and choose inside the menu of nvda for the hims that's the driver for all of the hims displays like smart beetle, or braillesense or what ever.
i know, there are also braille displays they need an installed driver before or when you use a bluetooth connection.
but not with hims if connected with usb.

there is no need to install any driver.

that's all!
he has nothing else to do.
i have the same braillesense and it works fine with the newest nvda.
so let he remove the installed driver and restart the computer and retry to connect the display

Hi,

Yesterday someone suggested to another poster that plug-ins might be causing some issues he was having.  I too have been having lots of freezes and since I have a fair number of plug-ins installed I decided to try something.

I disabled almost all of the plug-ins I have installed and the freezes have gone away.  I was having at least 2 or 3 everyday prior to disabling them.  I have had none at all in the last 24 hours.

You might check and see if your plug-ins are causing your freezes too.

When NVDA freezes, it seems that the keyboard freezes. I have been trying to run either JAWS or Narrator, then passing the NVDA+F1 key stroke to get at the existing log, because I’m assuming that NVDA is still running, since I have not found the old log hanging around. I could really use some advise diagnosing this issue, so that I can either add to a GitHub issue some useful information or make a new one.

Re: Microsoft Access Databases

Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>

It's probably not your decision, and I don't know how much influence you have over the process, but just for general reference, if this database is going to be used by multiple people simultaneously, Microsoft Access is *not* the program to be used for this, since it doesn't do well with such usage.  Of course, if it's just something that will be posted for others to grab a copy when needed, then that doesn't apply, and the use is just fine, but just be aware of that before trying to build a whole subdepartment on such a system, it won't go well.

Some other results come up if you omit "screen readers" as part of the search, but many of them don't apply.

Jim, I'm running Win 10 & latest NVDA & not experiencing those sorts
of problems. It'd be interesting to see if your event logs contain
anything notable, ie, I'm wondering if this could possibly be
hardware-related.

Re: can no longer save attachments in outlook

Brian Moore

If you are getting rich text messages, there is no easy keyboard way of getting to the attachment.

the standard shift tab from the message body will not work in rich text messages.  note, this is not normally the case unless you are working in an organization with an exchange server.  if you get all your messages in html, this isn't really a thing as you can shift tab from the body to get to the attachment.

People here love rich text messages and it is a head ache to get to attachments.

Hi, everyone,

Yesterday someone from the music list I'm on sent me a song I wanted to
save. I could no longer save it in the usual way by hitting the context key.

I had to use object navigation to save the message and that shouldn't be.
What could be going on with outlook 2013?

Thanks for your help in advance.
