If you terminate it then reboot the machine, what then?

Not having 10, I'm not sure what that does but I have noticed yesterday on windows 7, there was a windows update and the first time it rebooted after the update it too had narrator running but I've not heard it since terminating and restarting the computer.
No idea what was going on but knowing Microsoft they probably did something odd to a flag somewhere.

It could be tied up with that ease of access centre starting that others have noticed.

I was able to install here on win7. During installation I heard the
beep that usually signals a system permission request, but NVDA didn't
read the request. It was during the section of installation that gives
the constant beep, not the rising beep. I ctrl-tabbed until I got to
the correct window, I couldn't read it, all I was getting was a yes/no
and some sort of address or file location message.
Anyway, once I hit yes nvda finished installing pretty shortly.

I hope that's helpful.

Hi everyone,

We (believe we) have fixed the issue preventing Windows 7 users from
seeing
the update to 2018.2.

If anyone is running NVDA 2018.1 on Windows 7 still (ie, you haven't
manually downloaded and installed the update), could you please advise
whether the "Check for updates" function in the help menu works now?

If you have the option set to automatically check for updates, it will
only
look once a day, so likely won't pick it up until tomorrow, but if you
don't manually check for updates, it should also work next time it
checks.

If anyone has any problems from now though, please let me know.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Yes OK here too, until I tried to reboot master and completely confused the machine into sulk mode, but I booted in narrator and rebooted the machine. I have a feeling if you keep on launching and closing nvda with different versions, sooner or later windows moans.

As I say, I do still have the weird issue with the log file being locked on a reboot, generating that file in the nvda folder about errors. I am sure its something to do with my machine but blowed if I can pin it down to anything as the problem comes and goes.

As I write now I am a win7 sp1 user with all update and working fine with nvda 2018.2.
But I do not understand why people here are spreading rumors that 2017.4 was the last version for win7 users.
The only thing I admit is that somewhere NVACCESS had a problem including the upgrade into the help menu i.e. that is the case for my system but please do the upgrade manually and the update process is just working fine then.
I am very satisfied with the hard work for this new version.

2017.4 is the last version you'll get.

Re: Administrative privileges.

Chris Mullins

Hi Nevzat
I would have thought you should be able to assign shortcuts as these are personal to your account and don't affect other users, so should not require admin priviledges. If you are using a work computer it maybe that a corporate group policy is in effect which denies the capability but this would be unlikely.

As Brian asked, is your user account standard or administrator? Could you give us more information, such as operating system being used, work or home computer, is yours the only account on the computer etc.

The process I would use to assign a shortcut key is:
Select desktop icon
Press alt+enter to open properties
Tab to the shortcut key control and press the shortcut letter alone, the CTRL+Alt part of the command is added automatically by Windows
Tab to OK and press enter.

If you get an error after pressing OK, please give full details

Cheers

Subject: [nvda] Updating to 2018.2 working on Windows 7

Hi everyone,

We (believe we) have fixed the issue preventing Windows 7 users from seeing
the update to 2018.2.

If anyone is running NVDA 2018.1 on Windows 7 still (ie, you haven't
manually downloaded and installed the update), could you please advise
whether the "Check for updates" function in the help menu works now?

If you have the option set to automatically check for updates, it will only
look once a day, so likely won't pick it up until tomorrow, but if you
don't manually check for updates, it should also work next time it checks.

If anyone has any problems from now though, please let me know.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: For windows 7 users

Hi Clare,

Shortly after NVDA 2018.1 came out, Microsoft made a change to the OneCore voices in the version of Windows 10 that was about to go live for users.  We had to release 2018.1.1 to include a fix purely for that so the Windows 10 users using OneCore voices wouldn't be affected.  Because it only affected that one thing, we figured if we disabled the update for Windows 7 and 8 users, they wouldn't be bothered by being asked to download an update that didn't change anything for them.

Unfortunately in doing that, what we did was disable ALL future updates for Windows 7 / 8 users on our server - you could still download the latest version manually, which was what I recommended earlier today - and it would work fine, it was just the update routine that didn't work as expected.

In any case, we've now fixed it, and anyone running Windows 7 or 8 should be able to check for updates successfully now.

As an aside, Microsoft have publicised that Windows 7 will be supported until 2020.  So, you can expect that NVDA will support Windows 7 at least until then - and as with Windows XP - for as long afterwards as we can manage without impacting our ability to keep working and improving the experience for everyone else.  So, while your next computer will almost certainly come with Windows 10, you can rest assured that you don't need to change from Windows 7 if you don't want to because of NVDA for at least the next couple of years.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi!
Although I haven't yet read any replies to the announcement below, I wish to point out that it isn't totally true.
I admit that when I checked for NVDA updates yesterday, after reading that NVDA 2018.2 had been released, I was told there was no update available, but I was already using NVDA 2018.1, and I was able to download the 2018.2 installer and install the new version without any problems.
I wish to add that NVDA 2018.2 is working fine on this computer, which has Windows 7 Service pack 1 on it.
Since this laptop is now seven years old, I don't feel ready to upgrade it to Windows 10, but my next computer, when I get that, is likely to have Windows 10 on it.
Bye for now!
From Clare

Hi,
This message is for Windows 7 users.

You will not receive NVDA 2018.2
2017.4 is the last version you'll get.
I'd highly suggest upgrading to Windows 10.

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

If i put 2018.1.1 in a portable folder, and then ran that, should that prompt for the update and test what you want?
