Re: Blindspot is a windowless spotify

I tried using the new windows 10 app and there are still unlabeled buttons. And none of the check boxes anounce themselves so I may go back to BlindSpot. I'm honestly shocked they made some aspects of the program accessible. How in the world did that happen? LOL! Someone suggested I just use their mobile app. I still use a flip phone! I perfer to use my laptop and desktop for, well, everything else. I'm old school, I guess. There are active feature suggestions popping up so someone is working on it, somewhere! LOL.

Hello,

Pressing enter on the link will probably open it, if it’s to be downloaded, try the context menu, [key to the left of the right control key on a standard keyboard], you get options including maybe “save as” or “save target as”, this should bring up the normal save as dialogue and the file can be saved to a folder, from there it cvan be opened in a program such as Windows media player.

We don’t know what kindof file it is so can’t be specific, I hope this helps and good luck.

I discussed the file type briefly but my main point is that using the context menu will allow you to save files on some sites and not on others.  this is not related to the file type, it's how the site is constructed.

We don't know, but my guess is that, in this case, Internet Explorer is being used and the file opens in Windows Media player, hence the question of how to save from there.

In the context of other browsers, not the archaic Internet Explorer, the file is played in the browser when you press enter on the link.  If you are on a site where save target as or equivalent doesn't work, you need to know that you can use the command control s while the file is playing, and save it while in the browser in that way.

Of course, that presupposes that you are dealing with an actual file that is playing from the site as a file, and not a stream.  The stream plays a little of a file and then refreshes the buffer in the browser or player but the entire file is never available.  Just a little bit ahead of where you are listening.  It can't be saved because it is a stream, not a file playing as a file from the web site.  Since this is called a podcast in the question, the odds are that it is an actual file being played from the web site, not a stream as I am using the word.

Hello Gene,

If you  read my message again, I do say, “We don’t know what kind of file it is so can’t be specific”,

It’s worth a try anyway, if the original questioner could say exactly what podcast  is to be downloaded, that would be better.

As you rightly say, that is why you asked questions.

That is one way you can save many files.  But it is important to know other ways as well.  Some sites don't support downloading files in that way.  That's why I asked questions such as whether the file opens in Windows media Player.

Hi!
Narrator seems to have gotten snappier in recent versions. My main problem with it is that it limits my browser choice, and screen readers should strive not to do that.

It seems to me like Microsoft are slipping back into the ways that got them

into the brown sticky stuff with edge. Ie changing things and putting out

releases with no advisory to the screenreader community of a big change in

the system. we have seen it in Skype recently too. Somebody over there at

Microsoft needs to get a better grip on changes that affect access software

and not merely assume narrator is all that matters.

Narrator is still too slow and clunky to use every day.

Re: I give up!

I doubt this has anything to do with Avast.  If Avast kept changes from being made in the registry, you couldn't install programs nor could you change most program settings.  How did you find this hidden partition and how do you know it is related to Avast?  I'm very skeptical unless you present more information.

I think we have been down these roads already. Without some kind of hands

protective that anti virus is.

It seems that often simple uninstall may well make it seem to be gone but

its often left running routines in a hidden partition unseen by the task

manager which makes deletion of the folder impossible. Also modification of

certain registry entries appears to be impossible also, so if some have

become deregistered, and avast or a similar program is on the machine or has

been re registering them may not work. Indeed on the machine I had like this

any attempt to even compact the registry resulted in windows restarting.

it of course then loaded back the un modified last known good copy.

When you get very rare events such as this one, you really do need somebody

Its hard to ask the right questions otherwise I find.

This can be especially pertinent if the user has no interest in the under

Are you just running nvda? Or do you have other screen readers running at the same time, even on silent mode?

Check audio ducking in nvda as well as windows

Also check the audio output device is correct in nvda

And of course you have tried other synths as well?? Haven’t you?

We don't know what the situation is regarding availability of newer versions of Windows. We don't know why Zara continues to use XP. Whatever the reason, whether she can upgrade or not, the longer XP continues to be used, the more limited what can be done will become.

Zara has often said things like I will use XP forever. We don't know the situation but that doesn't sound like someone who has no choice. it sounds like someone who wants to use it forever. She has also said that she will use a certain version of Firefox forever. Again, we don't know but this sounds like a statement of intent, not a statement of necessity.

Hi Simon,

What version of eSpeak-NG are you using? Looking at:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/releases indicates that the
latest
version is 1.49.2, which we updated to prior to NVDA 2017.4.

Having said that, I know there are still issues with eSpeak, some of
which
are tracked on our issue tracker, and some on eSpeak-NG's here:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/issues

Kind regards

Re: question

Gene

Do you hav4e avast on the system?
Or have you had it in the past.
I have just found that after a normal uninstall it leaves a couple of routines which cannot seemingly be stopped and they protect anything from altering the registry, and it occurred to me that if any program does this and you attempt to re register dll files it will probably not let it do so.

This is the same old topic, just a new subject line. NVDA is still unknowning and being silent no matter what versions I put on it. I tried the latest 2018 snapshot, a version 2015 snapshot and a version of 2016. It doesn't work on the logon screen either. re-initializing-or whatever it is-the dl files doesn't help either and I'm not techy enough to fool around in the python console. It is just a mystery to me why NVDA has this problem and none of my other screen readers do. One interesting thing is that it does kind of work with Microsoft Edge which is the only browser where the web pages are not silent. As I say, I'm using Windows 10 version 1709 build 16299.248. I'm trying not to become obsessive about it but I hate loose ends!

Hi Quentin

Just tried again today to download the latest snapshot with 16 at the end of it and still getting the same problem wheather you do it from inside of the master snap shot or actually going to the snapshots page and downloading it that way.

If the second way is chosen it does not come up with the error but will let you save it but it never really comes down only part and even when left it dies.

When i went to do it through the master snapshot i get the same message as below.

C:\Users\hurri\AppData\Local\Temp\uRVRN1vw.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

I then went to the nvaccess website put in my email address to get the 2017.4 release and what do you know I have the 2017.4 fully downloaded to this computer and it starts up.

I also did a reset on the modem to see to see if there were problems there but even after that it still does it. At present i am doing a disk clean up just in case there was a corrupted copy causing it but do not think so.

I just thought i let you know it is still doing it and i guess as long as i can get the next release of nvda when it comes out it is a good thing.

Makes you wonder if it is a geographical thingy with a server?

Hi Howard,

Most users would use the regular stable release (2017.4 currently), available from the main page.

The "Snapshot" builds are "beta" versions, which are built in between the stable releases, so that anyone interested can test out new features, check whether bug fixes do indeed fix reported bugs (and don't introduce any new ones), etc.

They are available from: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/snapshots/

The "Next" snapshots are newer, like "alpha" builds and may not necessarily be as stable.

The "Master" snapshots (as mentioned in this thread) are more like "beta" quality - they have features and fixes which have been in Next for a couple of weeks and are hopefully more stable.

While anyone can download them, we do recommend that you keep a stable version of NVDA on hand in case things don't work as planned with the snapshot builds. As for size, they are a similar size to the regular stable release, around 20MB.

If you download and run one, it should work much like the stable version - ie bring up the same dialog offering to install etc.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Even if it does start downloading it dies shortly after.

It seems to do it in all the browsers not download but other sites will let me download stuff.

It is weird how some can get it and not others.

If not then its a routing issue to the servers from your location by the sounds of it, but its very odd. Anyone else you know in your area who can also try it? Might be good to see if its your end or in fact a widespread issue.
I guess you could try some pings to the server address and see if the round trip time or packet loss is unacceptable.

No problems with the internet or going to the snapshots page etc it is say when you go to either update the master snapshot through the help section it goes up to the server and then you press the enter key on the save one to download it it is just not downloading from there server that way and even if you go to the main page where the snapshots are and click on the file to download it you still get the same result. Some of the file might come down maybe 400 k or so some times more but never the whole program.

The anti virus is not stopping it either. I have also tried different browsers still the same result.

It seems to be wanting me to retry the download all the time so is not downloading from the snapshots page but no problems any where else for downloading.

I doubt it. There may some problem in your area or in your part of the country that is interfering with Internet communications between there and the server. there is no reason that different servers would be used.

Hi

Nar no matter which browser you use and which way it is just not coming down. I even tried it on the next snapshot and the same results.

I also did it with either the save link thingy in mozilla fire fox and what ever the others are called as well.

it is weird how you and some others can get it but not me. I used to be able to get it every week apart from this weekend.

I am guessing maybe other servers are used for you guys?

Hi guys

is the servers playing up? For the last couple of days i have been trying to download a master snapshot and each time it comes down it is only about 540k. Is the server playing up? for when i go to click on it up comes a security smart screen I think it is the windows one.

I am also wondering if things have changed like it is a stub then it gets the main file? I am guessing not.

I usually like once a week to see what might of gone into it each week.

Has any one else had the same problems?

This was doing it from inside of the master snapshot under the help section.

I have also tried it from the main page and still got the same results.

This was again on feb 18th and also tried on the 17th

Some podcast sites hide the location of the file using an intermediary html page with javascript, one assumes so it can send you the most appropriate version of the content. these days people could be using mobile devices of course. I've come across sites that seemingly have different bit rate versions of the same file or maybe its somehow encoded on the fly, no idea, but this sort of thing can complicate the downloading of audio for you to keep.

Hello,

Pressing enter on the link will probably open it, if it’s to be downloaded,
try the context menu, [key to the left of the right control key on a
standard keyboard], you get options including maybe “save as” or “save
target as”, this should bring up the normal save as dialogue and the file
can be saved to a folder, from there it cvan be opened in a program such as
Windows media player.
We don’t know what kindof file it is so can’t be specific, I hope this helps
and good luck.

Best Regards, Jim.

But when you press enter on the link, what happens? Does it play In Media
Player? I believe someone described how to download a file such as a
podcast playing in Windows Media Player. But before that method is of any
use to you, does the file open in the player?

It seems to me like Microsoft are slipping back into the ways that got them into the brown sticky stuff with edge. Ie changing things and putting out releases with no advisory to the screenreader community of a big change in the system. we have seen it in Skype recently too. Somebody over there at Microsoft needs to get a better grip on changes that affect access software and not merely assume narrator is all that matters.

Narrator is still too slow and clunky to use every day.
I was going to get a windows 10 machine but until they stop messing about I'm sorely tempted to stay old fashioned!

Have they lost that Jenny whats her name from the accessibility management who seemed to do a good job before?

Hi all,

First, apologies for mentioning competition, but I felt it is best to do so
given the overall context. Second, the advisory is deemed major (to severe
for some cases) and is applicable for people running Windows 10 Fall
Creators Update and beyond. The source of this advisory is a Win10 forum
hosted on Groups.IO at https://win10.groups.io/g/win10.

Thanks.

Subject: [win10] Version 1709 and beyond: screen readers must support uIA
notification event in order to announce various things from apps #ADVISORY
#WinTen1709 #WinTen1803

Hi everyone,

The following advisory is considered major in that it impacts all known
screen readers )except for one or two; feel free to pass this on, although
please do cite where you've got the advisory from):

Problem: notifications from apps such as Calculator, Microsoft Store and
others are not announced by screen readers.

Background: in Windows 10 Version 1709 and later, if apps are written
correctly, they can send notification texts to be announced by screen
readers. A UIA client such as a screen reader must be able to catch this in
order to announce certain notifications, including Calculator's display
window, app update status in Microsoft Store, various notifications from
Edge, Alarms and Clock and other apps.

Steps to reproduce:

1. While using Windows 10 Version 1709 or later (including current
Insider Preview builds), launch an app such as Alarms and Clock (be sure it
is the latest version).
2. In case of Alarms and Clock, go to Stopwatch tab and start and stop
the stopwatch.
3. For Calculator, do some calculations.

Expected: screen reader announces messages such as "Stopwatch stopped" in
Alarms and Clock and "display is something" in Calculator.

Actual: only Narrator announces such texts.

Cause: other screen readers do not track UIA notification event. This is due
to the fact that Version 1709 introduces this event, which requires tracking
a newer UIA interface.

Known solutions/mitigations/workarounds and impact:

* Narrator: green light/okay; works out of the box (requires Version
1709 and later).
* JAWS for Windows: red light/major; no support (version 2018.1802.78
did not solve the Calculator display text problem, for instance).
* NonVisual Desktop Access: yellow light/solution being tested
(through an add-on update).

This advisory will be closed once major screen readers (in addition to the
three listed above) provides at least a basic solution.

Cheers,

Joseph
