Re: Recovering an Acapela activation key from unusable computer how’s it done?

Well code factory is ok as long as you lock and unlock your keys.

Its stated you need to do this when you activate its not that hard to do.

If it screws atguys or code factory will probably help you reset your count or clear your ids or something.

Mind you you may just have to buy more unless that is you use atguys which are always fast.

Re: Minor Problem: NVDA Closing/Exit Sounds Not Being Heard When Exiting NVDA

David Goldfield

I am happy to report that v1.6.3 of the Acapela driver has fixed the problem of the exit sound not being heard when exiting or when restarting NVDA. When I first loaded the Acapela voices there was some noticeable difference in that the pitch sounded very low even though it was set to 50. However, switching to another voice and then back to my preferred voice fixed that glitch, as well.

They are fine for books and games though.

Espeak is also good in dosbox but that could also be my old dos days.

Of course depending what the game is, you need a voice that fits.

Sometimes there are arcade and other games that while you can run a high quality voice, especially if these are mimicking older arcade machines, high quality kinda doesn't go, then something crappy and robotic sounding like eloquence fits that machine.

Beatstar for example fits a lot better with eloquence because I concidder it an arcade type unit type deal.

But it depends on the user and what you do of course.

For most of the time I actually need performance over quality.

As long as its read then its fine.

Re: Focus Issues on Facebook Desktop Site Using Firefox

George McCoy

That doesn't work for me. I face this issue in all Chromium-based browsers, firefox and the old edge.

One thing that helps a bit is to get into the habit of using nvda plus spacebar to turn off focus mode.  It almost seems that the escape key is getting through to facebook.

If I get stuck in the reactions area, I find that clicking one of the reaction buttons using the spacebar lets me exit focus mode using nvda plus spacebar without zinging off to the bottom of the newsfeed or list of posts in a group.

This behavior makes it nearly impossible to use facebook desktop efficiently.

Hi from me,

You say that you happen to face it on Firefox. I face it on Google Chrome. That's to say, when I come upon the like button in the reactions toolbar area while in the browse mode, NVDA automatically switches to the focus mode. And then, when I hit escape as you do, NVDA's focus is thrown somewhere else. To get rid of the inconveniences, I go to the NVDA menu, choose the advanced submenu, and then tab to the automatically set system focus to focusable elements to uncheck it just to stop NVDA's focus skipping of its own accord. When I do that, I can use www.facebook.com much better when I walk through the reactions area and the comments area.

Both Chrome and NVDA are the latest versions (NVDA being the latest stable).

When I read posts, I use browse mode, pressing "h" to move from heading to heading. If I want to like a post, I navigate to the like button. When I press enter on it, it appears to be stuck in the reactions area. If I press escape, I am thrown somewhere else on the page.

I try to comment on a post I liked, and it has me doing things to the reactions. I hit the escape key and again, I"m thrown somewhere else on the page. I hope I can help you all solve this one. It is annoying, to say the least.

Add-on Updater 20.07 is on its way – it will show up in about an hour or so from now. Key changes include ability to detect and present a message about legacy add-ons (add-ons with features included in NVDA; as of today, this applies to Enhanced ARIA, Focus Highlight, and Screen Curtain), and possibility to save add-on update settings by pressing Control+NVDA+C, revert to saved settings (Control+NVDA+R), or reset to defaults (Control+NVDA+R three times).

IMPORTANT: Add-on Updater 20.07 requires NVDA 2020.1 or later. Although the add-on will work with 2019.3 with modifications, please update to NVDA 2020.1 or later for best experience.

Cheers,

Joseph

To be honest that was why I got myself sapi eloquence and vocaliser.

True they cost me more to buy but I don't have this issue with nvda versions.

If it wasn't so ruddy expensive I'd buy the entire acapella sapi to but you can't download the full english or multilang infovox and need to buy it as well a flash drive.

That would be fine but at double the price after buying it in the uk, no thanks.

Its a pitty new zealand or australia don't have a local distributor at all.

Its also a pitty I can't just buy it as an online purchice from acapella itself and is probably the only thing stopping me getting that one.

Seroproc is nice but with everything being 25 bucks each and with noveltys being 10 bucks each I'd have to buy everything as indevidual products.

Neospeech is allso split up as well as ivona and while maxiaids has the old neospeech for a reasonable price and while they claim to ship outside the us, paypal seems to only work in the us so I had to give up.

I may try later on and see if I can manually send them cash without using paypal for the thing.

Or at least not the paypal form, I have brought things with direct email address submition before and it has worked.

NVDA              2020 and will be disabled if I proceed with installation. Someone

indicated the voice needs to be updated. I need to know how to do that.

Greg,
I believe I found an updated installer file and will try it shortly.

Greg,
Ok now that I found the source where I bought the add on, I looked around on the site but did not see anything for drivers. I can contact them but who knows how long that will take. Would the driver be in the add on file?

Hello,
It is not the voice that needs to be updated. You need to update the driver for the voices. You should be able to find the updated driver from the code factory website or from where you bought the voices.

Ok I wish to take care of this one. How do I update my purchased
Samantha voice so it works with the NVDA 2020 build? Once I do this, I
can check off more to-do tasks. Thanks.

I also have difficulties with Outlook, but specifically the calendar. When in day  view NVDA will frequently crash when using control tab or control shift tab to move between the calendar view and the arrows that go to the previous or next day. I would say this happens one out of three times and specifically when focus lands in the calendar view. Windows 10 professional, latest version of NVDA and office 365

As well as restarting with add-ons disabled, you might be interested in trying the new Beta.  We've made some improvements there in general, i'm not sure about your exact Outlook issue:  https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2020-2beta2/

If you can still replicate the issues with 2020.2 beta 2 and with add-ons disabled, if you could send us a log, at debug level, that would really help narrow down what is happening:

First of all, your NVDA key is either INSERT or CAPS LOCK, depending on how you have NVDA setup.  So, to set your log level:
1) Press NVDA+control+g to open the general settings
2) Press TAB until the focus is on ""Log level""
3) Press DOWN ARROW to get to ""Debug""
4) Press ENTER to close settings
5) Press NVDA+control+c to save settings.

To restart NVDA with add-ons disabled:
1) Press NVDA+Q
2) Down arrow to ""Restart with add-ons disabled""
3) Press ENTER

Next, recreate the issue - do whatever causes problems.

To get NVDA's log after that, there are several ways:

If NVDA is still running and usable:
1) Press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer
2) Press CONTROL+A to select all.
3) Press CONTROL+C to copy.
4) Open your email and start a message to info@..., type a little about what you have done and what has happened in the body of the message, then leave a space and:
5) Press CONTROL+V to paste the copied log.

Instead of using the log viewer, or if NVDA has stopped and you needed to restart it or the computer:
1) Press WINDOWS+R to open Windows' Run dialog
2) Type %temp% and press ENTER (that's the percent sign, the letter t e m p and another percent sign).  Windows Explorer should open to the temporary folder.
3) Press TAB to move to the file list
4) Press N and move down to find up to three files:  nvda.log (the log file for the current or most recent NVDA session), nvda-old.og (the log from the previous session) and nvda-crash.dmp (a crash dump with more information created if NVDA itself crashes).
5) Depending on what email program you use, the steps will be different, but attach as many of those three files to an email to info@... as will be useful, and again in the body of the message describe a bit about what has happened."

And also please make sure you disable in NVDA settings/Advance Use UI Automation to access Microsoft Word document controls when available.

Subject: [nvda] Crashes in Word and Outlook

Folks:

I'm new to this list, but I've been using NVDA as my exclusive Windows screen reader for about 8 years.

I'm in a new work environment where I practically live in outlook, and
I'm finding that I experience frequent freezes when composing emails,
particularly when highlighting or deleting. The screen reader goes
silent and doesn't come back, even if I wait a very long time.

The only way to recover is to go to the desktop with Windows+M and
restart NVDA with ctrl+alt+N. NVDA almost always restarts after a 20-30
second delay with an error sound concurrent with the NVDA startup sound.

When I return to Outlook the email I was composing is *sometimes* still
there, but it is frequently gon -- disappeared from the world without a
trace in Drafts or Trash.

This can happen as frequently as every few minutes, or sometimes goes
for hours without happening. I'm unable to pin it to any particular
situation or constellation of other concurrent activities.

I experience a similar problem in MS Word, also while highlighting or
deleting. Again, the file is sometimes there when I restart NVDA, but it
is just as likely to be recovered from the last time I saved it...

Needless to say, this is extremely frustrating and is terrible for my
productivity and mental well being.

I am using Version 2020.1, but this problem was present and even worse
in prior versions. In the current version I'm usually able to restart
NVDA from the desktop with the keyboard shortcut. In prior versions the
only way to recover was to restart my computer.

I have searched the web and the archive of this list to see if others
have experienced this, but I'm coming up mostly empty. From the issues
list on Github, it looks like this has happened to other folks in much
older versions, but it's marked as closed.

Any insights or help with this will be most gratefully appreciated.

Best!

Re: Minor Problem: NVDA Closing/Exit Sounds Not Being Heard When Exiting NVDA

David when I run NVDA I have this problem too.

Admittedly, this is not a major problem but I've recently noticed that when I press ctrl+Q I no longer hear the wav file that is normally heard when exiting or closing NVDA. The wav file does exist in the same folder as the startup file and when I open the file it does play in my default media player. I thought I remember seeing some recent discussions about this on this list but I could not locate the relevant thread when searching the archives. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a known fix? I did install the 2020.2 beta 2 release but the problem persists.
