XP should be dead, but there are as I said once before there are still reasons due to politics, wealth or lack of it and other things where a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush if that bush is not available to you right now!

Eventually of course you will be restricted to old software.
I came across a lady a couple of weeks ago still running windows 98, and the machine was on line and did not have any viruses at all.
Of course she was the only user and was using an old version of supernova on it. Until the hardware dies, it will probably suit her. its debatable which will go first her or the hardware!

I agree with Joseph here also. He and I had a nice 20 MIN or so talk on Skype last night and yes Jenny is still at MS. And Robert XP is dead. Embrace the future of WIN 10 and as I always say viva la NVDA!

Hi,
No, Jenny is still around and leading accessibility efforts at Microsoft.
In response to a post regarding MS slipping back to dark ages: in this context (the overall thread), both sides (MS and screen reader vendors) are at fault: Microsoft for not communicating things well, and screen reader vendors taking a while to respond. At least NVDA is taking the lead in responding back.
As for what’s going on behind the scenes: NVDA did not respond to UIA notification events. We did have means of tracking it for a while (via an add-on), but it wasn’t until yesterday that we began responding properly (again via an add-on update). For those who know where this is going: yes, NVDA will read UIA notification text starting next week once Windows 10 App Essentials 18.03 is released. But this is just a start: I’m using that ad-on to field test what will eventually be edits to NVDA screen reader source code to let NVDA announce notifications without help from an add-on or two (and I’m working on both of these at the moment). This is the reason why I put “yellow light” for NVDA because work is in progress to let NVDA announce notifications.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hello:

LibreOffice is not very accessible with screen readers.

Apache OpenOffice works OK with NVDA. It may not be perfect. But! At least in my experience it's better than LibreOffice!

Appearantly none of the open source office suites are very interested in accessibility for the blind! They will not even make an attempt to have a dialog with screen reader developers to see how the can improve their software so that the blind can have better access to the software!

At least for selfish reasons Microsoft has worked with screen reader developers to make MS Office accessible for screen reader users.

More/many blind screen reader users really need to demand from open source office suites developers to provide great accessibility for the blind!

I'm so very sorry! That i've not been of much help to you! but, I've had a very bad experience with LibreOffice in particular, and, with open source/freeware office suites as a whole!

I really do hope that everyone who reads this will take the time to send very nice/polite emails to LibreOffice telling them that blind people really want to use their software and if they make it accessible. Blind people are very loyal to those who develop blind friendly software!!!

Re: FW: [win10] Version 1709 and beyond: screen readers must support uIA notification event in order to announce various things from apps #winten1803 #advisory #winten1709

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Oh good, as listening to her interview last year she sounded very committed to me.
I do feel that a company like Microsoft should not put stuff out like this without properly testing it with real world access tools though, and if they are changing stuff like Skype and using via for more things they really need to delay till everyone else catches up, what is a couple of months in the great scheme of things. We have seen this with Firefox recently and there are probably other bits of software out there with issues too.
The decision for many is this.
Go with what you have and hope windows 10 settles down to just updates, or go for it now and get periodic loss of access. The former is my choice as I use the pc a lot for my communications and charity work, but if you have more than one device its often a good idea to keep both just in case of course!
I'd be scratching my head if I only had one puter and it was on this crazy windows 10 new version every few months treadmill at the moment. I have always steered clear of online systems like google mail and docs since one unfortunate change in a web site can spell disaster. That is why I still use outlook express and an older version of word and windows 7.
Eggs in one basket is an old but very true proverb.

The question appears to be "what is NVDA 2018.1rc1 used for?", which seems a
bit of an odd question for this list, but maybe Anthony simply isn't familiar
with RC versions of software?

Basically, NVDA 2018.1rc1 is a "release candidate", and should work just like
2018.1 will, unless any significant problems get found.

Hope that helps,

Antony.

If it plays in a media player, most likely you have the file already
downloaded on your computer. Open the searchbox or whatever it is called
in Windows 10 and type:

%temp%

Check the folder that opens for a file with mp4 or waf or something like
that. You might even have the name in the download list of your browser.

Hello,

Pressing enter on the link will probably open it, if it’s to be downloaded, try the context menu, [key to the left of the right control key on a standard keyboard], you get options including maybe “save as” or “save target as”, this should bring up the normal save as dialogue and the file can be saved to a folder, from there it cvan be opened in a program such as Windows media player.

We don’t know what kindof file it is so can’t be specific, I hope this helps and good luck.

Re: question

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Interestingly some sites muck things up for example a certain site used to have a different podcast address to download with a podcast downloader as well as the main one. I neglected to remove this address from my podcatcher, and then suddenly the other day it was trying to continuously download a file on the old address. This was because the site in question simply reused the rss link to send its stream out on.
That is probably not the best way them to have done things, and of course at any one time the file here was always incomplete and about four megs long as it kept refreshing from the start.

I guess these days there are so many ways to make files available its hard to know what is going on.
If you do ever want to record a file which won't let you download it, there are programs around that will, Virtual recorder is one of them, but remember unless you are careful, the screenreader and system sounds can get recorded as well.

Hi gene

Your explanation is quite right. There isn’t any file to download but to play it on the website.

I discussed the file type briefly but my main point is that using the context menu will allow you to save files on some sites and not on others. this is not related to the file type, it's how the site is constructed.

We don't know, but my guess is that, in this case, Internet Explorer is being used and the file opens in Windows Media player, hence the question of how to save from there.

In the context of other browsers, not the archaic Internet Explorer, the file is played in the browser when you press enter on the link. If you are on a site where save target as or equivalent doesn't work, you need to know that you can use the command control s while the file is playing, and save it while in the browser in that way.

Of course, that presupposes that you are dealing with an actual file that is playing from the site as a file, and not a stream. The stream plays a little of a file and then refreshes the buffer in the browser or player but the entire file is never available. Just a little bit ahead of where you are listening. It can't be saved because it is a stream, not a file playing as a file from the web site. Since this is called a podcast in the question, the odds are that it is an actual file being played from the web site, not a stream as I am using the word.

Hello Gene,

If you read my message again, I do say, “We don’t know what kind of file it is so can’t be specific”,

It’s worth a try anyway, if the original questioner could say exactly what podcast is to be downloaded, that would be better.

As you rightly say, that is why you asked questions.

That is one way you can save many files. But it is important to know other ways as well. Some sites don't support downloading files in that way. That's why I asked questions such as whether the file opens in Windows media Player.

But when you press enter on the link, what happens? Does it play In Media Player? I believe someone described how to download a file such as a podcast playing in Windows Media Player. But before that method is of any use to you, does the file open in the player?

Make sure that the extension of the downloaded file is correct, otherwise
rename it in .nvda-addon.

Hmm well it just feels hard to learn its keys and then you do it feels very sluggish to me, but then I only get to use it when I am on windows 10, and so I'm not exposed to it most of the time. Most people I know are on windows 7 and that includes most of the people who work for the NHS in the UK as well, so I think although here we may suggest that windows ten is the way all should go, many companies and organisations are reluctant to break what is working for them and blind people who work for them will have to use what they have.
Like XP which is still in use a lot in the UK, I think the hype over windows 10 is much over the top. I think that while they keep moving goalposts about many admins will steer clear in case it mangles already running systems.

However that is my own opinion, and I'm not entering into a my screenreader is better than yours thread on here.

It seems to me like Microsoft are slipping back into the ways that got them
into the brown sticky stuff with edge. Ie changing things and putting out
releases with no advisory to the screenreader community of a big change in
the system. we have seen it in Skype recently too. Somebody over there at
Microsoft needs to get a better grip on changes that affect access software
and not merely assume narrator is all that matters.

Narrator is still too slow and clunky to use every day.
I was going to get a windows 10 machine but until they stop messing about
I'm sorely tempted to stay old fashioned!

Have they lost that Jenny whats her name from the accessibility management
who seemed to do a good job before?

Hi all,

First, apologies for mentioning competition, but I felt it is best to do
so
given the overall context. Second, the advisory is deemed major (to severe
for some cases) and is applicable for people running Windows 10 Fall
Creators Update and beyond. The source of this advisory is a Win10 forum
hosted on Groups.IO at https://win10.groups.io/g/win10.

Thanks.

Subject: [win10] Version 1709 and beyond: screen readers must support uIA
notification event in order to announce various things from apps #ADVISORY
#WinTen1709 #WinTen1803

Hi everyone,

The following advisory is considered major in that it impacts all known
screen readers )except for one or two; feel free to pass this on, although
please do cite where you've got the advisory from):

Problem: notifications from apps such as Calculator, Microsoft Store and
others are not announced by screen readers.

Background: in Windows 10 Version 1709 and later, if apps are written
correctly, they can send notification texts to be announced by screen
readers. A UIA client such as a screen reader must be able to catch this
in
order to announce certain notifications, including Calculator's display
window, app update status in Microsoft Store, various notifications from
Edge, Alarms and Clock and other apps.

Steps to reproduce:

1. While using Windows 10 Version 1709 or later (including current
Insider Preview builds), launch an app such as Alarms and Clock (be sure
it
is the latest version).
2. In case of Alarms and Clock, go to Stopwatch tab and start and stop
the stopwatch.
3. For Calculator, do some calculations.

Expected: screen reader announces messages such as "Stopwatch stopped" in
Alarms and Clock and "display is something" in Calculator.

Actual: only Narrator announces such texts.

Cause: other screen readers do not track UIA notification event. This is
due
to the fact that Version 1709 introduces this event, which requires
tracking
a newer UIA interface.

Known solutions/mitigations/workarounds and impact:

* Narrator: green light/okay; works out of the box (requires Version
1709 and later).
* JAWS for Windows: red light/major; no support (version 2018.1802.78
did not solve the Calculator display text problem, for instance).
* NonVisual Desktop Access: yellow light/solution being tested
(through an add-on update).

This advisory will be closed once major screen readers (in addition to the
three listed above) provides at least a basic solution.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: More on the nvdaHelperRemote (outprocMgrThreadFunc) error in new snapshots

Hi Joseph

Thank goodness, the problem just got fixed and snapshots, master and next, work fine now. The latest Windows update, build 16299.248, must have fixed things. Immediately after this update I tried to update NVDA again and it worked perfectly. I was going to write about this to the list today.

Thank you for the interest you have shown.

Kind regards

However, I have just installed the master snapshot as of today and am experiencing exactly the same problem. Here is my NVDA start up log in Debug format:

The log and your post doesn't match up. You say you're using master snapshots, but the log says you're actually using a next branch snapshot. Also, for situations like this, an info log won't help - you might want to set log level to debug and see if it can give you more info. Also, please do try using master snapshot (not next) and see if it fixes this.

Hello especially to the developers

Some days ago I reported that I have been getting an error with every master snapshot after 4 February. The header of the error message is:

nvdaHelperRemote (outprocMgrThreadFunc)

And the error text is:

Error registering focus winEvent hook

This only happens on my 64 bit machine. I have included the start-up log
for NVDA below. All add-ons were disabled to eliminate any of them as
the cause and UAC is set to 0. Here is the log which I hope will make
sense to some and clarify this very worrying problem:

Re: Bug in espeak ng used in NVDA Next

hi.
firefox 52esr is the last version that supports windows xp.
i did not know if developers made programs with something that does
not support xp, the program won't run on xp!
does visual studio 2015 supports xp?
because some versions of nvda which are built with this program, run
on xp and the last supported version on xp is 2017.3.
i dont trust any antivirus and security programs and never use them to
become worried in this regard that they dont support xp anymore!

On 2/24/18, Simon Eigeldinger <simon.eigeldinger@...> wrote:
Hi all,

I wholeheartedly want to say sorry.
If its the issue you are describing.

On the other hand if its possible there needs a way to go forward though.
Because Win XP is nowadays pretty difficult to be used because of many
software aren't supported anymore.
also antivirus, mail and browsers aren't running anymore on xp.
i don't know if Firefox ESR still runs on XP though it is still on the
52 branch so it might.

I also don't know if linux would be an alternative.

unfortunately espeak ng just starts with win 8.1
i also would be happy if it would work on win xp or 7.
though 7 might work.
i also don't know why they are using the win 8.1 sdk to build it.

i don't know if the voice data of espeak ng can be moved to espeak
though that might break the whole thing or no audio would come out of it.

Greetings,
Simon

Windows

Hi Simon,

What version of eSpeak-NG are you using?  Looking at:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/releases indicates that the
latest
version is 1.49.2, which we updated to prior to NVDA 2017.4.

Having said that, I know there are still issues with eSpeak, some
of
which
are tracked on our issue tracker, and some on eSpeak-NG's here:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/issues

You're welcome,
It does indeed record's what you here, and like stereo mix
you can set it to do that or to combine and records everything going
with the sound card,
in its setting it has the following options to choose from:

Recording from
for Windows XP for Vista, Win7, Win8, etc.
Record input voice (from Microphone)
Record output voice (from Computer), this one is what you here.

Record both in and out Voice, this one is every audio channel going
with the sound card, like sterio mix
Save in different channel, this one is to put the mic input in a
channel, and the speaker output in another one, as in left or right.
Hope it helps

program to use. Those who want the loopback feature can very easily get
it

Hello Gene,

Yes in effect, let’s take Audacity as it is a free program, to set it to
record everything regardless of soundcard settings, press Alt and right
arrow to edit, up arrow to preferences and press enter, go to the top of
the
list which is “devices and tab, arrow down to Windows WA sappie and then
tab
on to OK and press enter.
This will give the equivilent of “what you hear”.
I can give more detailed information if necessary, such as saving in MP3
format for which you need the lame mp3 encoder to be installed, also
free.
I would still like to know where the actual file is located as I am
curious
by nature.

Are you describing recording what you hear as the file plays or
something
else such as you can do in replay audio? A lot of recording programs
can't
do what replay audio and Total Recorder can do. If the person wants to
record what his sound card is playing, I can recommend a very simple
program
with which he can very likely do this. To be sure what settings he
should
use, I'd need to know what version of Windows he has and whether it has
a
what you hear or a stereo mix option. Even if it doesn't. he probably
can
do this but we would have to know what version of Windows is being used.

If all else fails and as a last resort, find your file in the browser
and
focus on it,open an audio editor such as Sound forge, Goldwave or
audacity
and start it recording, alt and tab back to your file and press enter,
let
it finish and then go back to the audio editor and stop it, you can then
save this file in whatever format you want.
You must make sure that the audio editor is set to accept input from the

Perhaps a bit long winded, but it will always work and I have done it on

Hi gene

Your explanation is quite right. There isn’t any file to download but to
play it on the website.

Anthony

I discussed the file type briefly but my main point is that using the
context menu will allow you to save files on some sites and not on
others.
this is not related to the file type, it's how the site is constructed.

We don't know, but my guess is that, in this case, Internet Explorer is
being used and the file opens in Windows Media player, hence the
question
of
how to save from there.

In the context of other browsers, not the archaic Internet Explorer, the
file is played in the browser when you press enter on the link. If you
are
on a site where save target as or equivalent doesn't work, you need to
know
that you can use the command control s while the file is playing, and
save
it while in the browser in that way.

Of course, that presupposes that you are dealing with an actual file
that
is
playing from the site as a file, and not a stream. The stream plays a
little of a file and then refreshes the buffer in the browser or player
but
the entire file is never available. Just a little bit ahead of where
you
are listening. It can't be saved because it is a stream, not a file
playing
as a file from the web site. Since this is called a podcast in the
question, the odds are that it is an actual file being played from the
web
site, not a stream as I am using the word.

Hello Gene,

If you read my message again, I do say, “We don’t know what kind of
file
it
is so can’t be specific”,

It’s worth a try anyway, if the original questioner could say exactly
what
podcast is to be downloaded, that would be better.

As you rightly say, that is why you asked questions.

Best Regards, Jim.

That is one way you can save many files. But it is important to know
other
ways as well. Some sites don't support downloading files in that way.
That's why I asked questions such as whether the file opens in Windows
media
Player.

Hello,

Pressing enter on the link will probably open it, if it’s to be
downloaded,
try the context menu, [key to the left of the right control key on a
standard keyboard], you get options including maybe “save as” or “save
target as”, this should bring up the normal save as dialogue and the
file
can be saved to a folder, from there it cvan be opened in a program such
as
Windows media player.

We don’t know what kindof file it is so can’t be specific, I hope this
helps
and good luck.

Best Regards, Jim.

But when you press enter on the link, what happens? Does it play In
Media
Player? I believe someone described how to download a file such as a
podcast playing in Windows Media Player. But before that method is of
any
use to you, does the file open in the player?

Media Player?
