Re: Problem with old versions of Portable firefox

That isn't plausible. I suspect some problem
with your system.
I may try downloading the portable version again to
see what happens. I downloaded it perhaps two months ago and it works
properly. Do you have another computer to try it on?

firefox Thanks but even the ESR Portable version is now warning that Accessibility Features have been disabled wen I install it. I understand the question somebody else posted last week about how could portable apps could now be made accessible. It does look like Mozilla has pulled accessibility support on all it current portable downloads. After installation I can access the menus and have been through all the options but can find no way to make even this ESR version accessible. I can open a web page such as www.bbc.co.uk using control L and the title of the window will say BBC home but there is no way to ;read any of the content in the resulting page or navigate using tab, or element shortcuts H for heading etc. I got similarly zero feedback when I opened www.google.co.uk. Firefox ESR and NVDA announces Google home but it is impossible to navigate to or read any of the web page or edit fields with NVDA. NVDA does not even recognise the BBC Home page as a web page in this ESR portable version , if I try insert F7 for Elements list all that comes up is a message from Firefox asking me if I want caret browsing enabled. For reference NVDA is still working normally with installed versions of Waterfox and Chrome and Edge and even Internet Explorer. I am on Windows 10 latest release and NVDA 2018.1 David Griffith .

Following suggestions on this list to use portable versions of Firefox, potentially with Webvisum, I downloaded and installed first of all the portable versions of Firefox 52 and then Firefox 51. It was surprising that even for Portable versions there was an installation process though the result was a folder labelled Firefox Portable with a portable executable in it. I was more surprised after both installs that a message came up saying that accessibility features had been disable , despite these being older versions of Firefox. Sure enough after running the programs I found these installs unusable both with NVDA and Jaws 2018. I downloaded these portable versions of Firefox from the Mozilla site but it appears that they are not genuine older versions as they all appear to have the accessibility problem. Is there an alternative source of portable versions that are accessible? David Griffith

Don't know how powerful the Malicious Software Removal Tool is but you can always run it. At the run command type mrt and press enter then follow the prompts.

Adware / Malware removers that are accessible with NVDA
Hi all,
somehow today I've picked up the adware that plays an audio warning that the computer mayh be infected with viruses and to contact Microsoft technical support on 'this number' for somebody who will help clean your computer (or bank account!) Anyway, I ran adwcleaner and that didn't help so I wondered what other tools people had been able to use with NVDA. Curiously this adware is only affecting Firefox ... Internet Explorer is not affected. I tried installing an earlier version over the current Firefox version I was using, but that just played the same malware. Adwcleaner did detect and remove some pup files but again to no effect. any suggestions would be very welcome :) Giles

Re: Other tool for solving the Verification Image
The only Captcha tool I ever used was included with an early Twitter client for the blind, called Qwitter. Sadly that vanished and there was no equivalent when Qwitter evolved into The Qube. But what I do use now is the iPhone and Android app Be My Eyes. It calls a human volunteer who uses the rear camera on the phone to tell you whatever you want ... such as the colour of a tshirt or what a Captcha image says. I've used Be My Eyes twice today to assist when Windows was doing an update and I didn't hear anything further (I realise that I'd somehow turned the NVDA setting to start automatically when logged in to Windows off). Obviously common sense applies - not having any files open with login details to any accounts visible, but you'd get an answer to your random letters test within the minute! ... And BME is free to install and use :)

Re: Focused mode
Chris
If you don’t want focus mode then turn off automatic focus mode under browse mode settings in NVDA That will fix it 😃

Re: Focused mode
Jonathan COHN
I tested this out briefly on my Windows 7 machine with NVDA 2018.1
At this point my firefox returned to focus and browse mode was still enabled.
So, sorry I can’t reproduce with the guidance provided.
Best Wishes,
Jonathan

Re: Focused mode

But most programs don't use browse mode and forms
mode. Are you saying that if you are in Wordpad, for example, this
happens? If you are in a browser or an e-mail program, reading mail as
HTML, or in Adobe Reader, I can see that this might happen. But are you
saying it happens in other programs that don't use browse and forms
mode?

Re: Focused mode
Gene
Also, what program are you entering and leaving
sleep mode in and what version of NVDA are you using? On further thought,
you may be saying you are stuck in forms mode. That may be the problem
that was discussed here perhaps two or three months ago where, if you shut down
NVDA while a browser is opened, then run it again, you will be stuck in forms
mode unless you close and open the browser again. My recollection is that
this problem was corrected in a recent update of NVDA.
Exit sleep mode in what program? Are you
describing what happens when you use sleep in a browser and turn it off when in
the browser? I don't know why that is but just pressing escape should
return you to browse mode. I didn't understand exactly what you were
asking in your first question but if escape works, it's probably the easiest way
to deal with the problem.

Hi! If you can live with a slight speed penalty compared to the ESR, then yes, it's the way to go. It's just been officially released and shouldn't give you much trouble. Greetings, Felix

My firefox just updated itself to version 59 64 bit. I am running NVDA 2018-1 on my Win10 64 bit laptop. Is this best firefox to be using with NVDA? Are there any firefox settings that should be changed to work best with NVDA 2018-1? Thanks
