nvda unresponsiveness

Marisane Moruthanyana

Morning nvda users

I am Marisane from SA.

I have, for sometime now, been looking for your assistance regarding
nvda unresponsiveness but to no avail.

I have recently upgraded to nvda 2017.4, but the unresponsiveness
still persists.

May I know whether this may be due to my laptop's using intel seleron
processor at a speed of less than 2ghz?

Does the processor type and its speed have any impact on nvda's
functionality / dysfunctionality?

What processor and speed should one take into account when buying a
laptop so that nvda may respond positively?

I am frustrated, because this happens only with nvda and not with jaws.

I use jaws demo as I have no licence for it to do some work on my PC,
but it responds very well that I do not have the same problems as
those with nvda.

If the processor type and its speed are the cause of nvda'
unresponsiveness, why only it and not other screen reader like jaws?

Your urgent assistance in this regard is appreciated in advance.

Please, please, please help, I am getting frustrated everyday.

I solely rely on nvda as my jaws is only 40 minutes.

Hope you understand.

Regards
Marisane

Re: nvda as an exe file

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

You surely have Microsoft security Essentials? This has saved me more than once on older machines. If you are having strange things happening you really do need to scan for viruses as Microsoft no longer send out malicious software removal tools monthly for these operating systems.
Luckily they are still supporting MSSE on XP.

Its very hard to advise on systems that are older as one does not know what one does not know, so to speak.
From your description it sounds like its just not running the file. In the absence of any message to you about the error its a bit of a crystal ball gazing problem.

The main reason I find exe files fail to run is that an anti virus system has suspended access to them at the last scan.
Of course malware can do the same then ask you to pay them to get your access back.
Unfortunately in XP its a simple registry hack to stop certain files from working but it could be one of many or indeed a service routine that achieves it, which is why I wondered what else you can run.

NVDA can read tagged PDF files. Adobe Reader should be able to read
PDF files.

Having said that, as we know, not all PDF files are tagged. For those
which aren't, yes you can use the OCR functionality of NVDA to read
the file. Note that you do need to open the file in Adobe Reader (you
can't simply select it in file explorer).

Once it's open, press NVDA+r (this is built in on Windows 10 in NVDA
2017.3 or later, but needs an add-on for earlier versions of either
Windows or NVDA). On Windows 10, you can then use your normal reading
keys to read the result. Using the add-on, you need to use the review
cursor.

See the User Guide for how to read with the review cursor:
https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html#toc29

There's also a section on using OCR:

Hi some of the programmers are paid, but a lot of the money comes from donations and also from grants from parts of the industry who want to make their products accessible.

I donated as soon as the latest version came out. We here in the so called affluent countries try to do our bit.At the moment I think the biggest userbase is in the Indian Subcontinent.

Thank you so much Joseph for doing these tutorials! I really love your first set of tutorials on NVDA 2015.1. I really like the tutorial on Win10 17, that build LOL!

Your last tutorinal is great, and I would prefer audio a little better, but text is totally fine as well. I really don’t care what format they are in, but a new set of NVDA tutorials from you would be really awesome.

Thanks, and you have my blessing to get started right away!

Re: safe mode

David Moore

Thanks a lot, Hareth!

Thank you very much for this, I will save it, and use it I’m sure. This is huge, and this is why I love this list!

I can learn as much as the rest of us, and I can help. How much more exciting can you get than that. I love this list, and I am using NVDA more, JAWS, and Narrator to access more than I ever have.

I can now boot into safe mode. This will really come in handy.

Thanks for serving us, and you too, Gene, for having your great web site and your wisdom. It is one of the best lists, and I really respect you all.

Hi Hareth

Could i put your steps up on my nvda audio tutorials page under trouble shooting. I am pretty sure i had already asked and you said yes but i have only got around to confirming what you typed and to make sure i was in safe mode.

I could confirm this by using the nvda key + letter B and then i copied the message that confirmed it which i would add to what was written. I did also have my wife confirm with her eyes i was there.

I also checked and my audio card is a viahd sound card on board.

NVDA was speaking just like narmal.

I was using windows 10 1709 and nvda 2017.4

I can put your name at the bottom of it if you would want it there.

text editors in Java

Hello all. Sorry if I am repeating myself, but here is a problem: while I am using Java based IDEs like NetBeans, PHP storm I am getting following problem.
When I am typing text in code editor I lose an ability to navigate thrue the text using coursor.
NVDA just doesn't speak before I press alt+tab and then moving back to my IDE. But then I try to type something the cycle repeats. Did anyone had that kind of issue? And is there any way to fix that?

With best regards

Re: Navigating by sentence

As I said before I really missed this feature when I switched from JAWS. Luckily, it can be used when writing in word it is very, very helpful when you are editing what you have written. I miss being able to do that in a browser so that I could read the sentence by sentence and have just gotten used to reading line by line even if the sentence is broken up. I know that I would personally use it. I had never thought about raising an issue about it, because I hate how you have to submit an issue and that side always just confuse me so I never bothered to try and figure it out. The answer is always know unless you ask. I just got used to the answer being no since I never felt like going through the trouble of asking the question.

I don't think it's a good idea to have the voice be painfully slow, as
accomodating new users might be for more experienced users. I would
suggest
doing what I do in tutorials. I have the speech speak at a good rate
for
experienced users, but I repeat things that are said so the
inexperienced
listener will know what has been said. I haven't done a tutorial in
quite
some time and I don't recall if I say everything or just about
everything
the speech says, but I repeat everything as I move through a dialog, a
ribbon, a menu, etc. I repeat everything that matters so users can
tell
what they need to know. My system accomodates both new and experienced
synthesized speech users..

OK, 1 make sure the voice is slow enough for new users. Most of the
tutorials I hear on the internet are using voices running way too fast.
Next, I think that a little time needs to be spent in the snapshot
tutorial

about how to use Github without going bald. I am not that thick but I
still

find it cluttered and very hard to use.

Is Edge really any better for pdfs than Adobe? The big issue is as we
all
know the clueless people who compile them with no tagging of content
reading

order changes.

Firefox. Would you be using ESR or attempting to cover the new Quantum
version which even when it can be made to function is still like a duck
with

a broken leg. OK in the water but tends to swim in circles a lot!

Also of course I know that you are about to embark in a major upgrade
to
nvda to use a version of Python better able to cope with newer systems,
and

this is bound to start throwing unexpected spanners into the air to
fall
who

knows where for a while, so its a good time to get folk used to
diagnosing
and working around any problems by giving them a bit of a lesson in the
logic to find where problems might be etc.
Just my few penneths worth.

Dear global NVDA community,

After reading recent threads on various NVDA lists and looking at some
tweets, I find myself asking if I should do it again: record the 2018
edition of the popular "Welcome to NVDA" tutorials set. The thing is,
there
are more superb tutorials out now, including NV Access's own Basic
Training
module. I do understand that many folks have come to know NVDA through
my
tutorials and some tutorials used mine as a reference or a guide.

For reference, the 2015 edition of this tutorials set can be found at:

http://www.josephsl.net/tutorials

If the community says I should record the 2018 edition, it'll be done
with
some conditions:

* The tutorial will be based on a combination of 2017.4 and latest
snapshot features.
* I'll be using Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update).
* I will not ask for payment for this set; if you insist on paying me,
I'd rather ask you to donate to NV Access.
* If possible, I'll come up with a text transcript and a way for folks
to provide edits via pull requests on GitHub.
* I'll be moving away from Internet Explorer for browse mode
demonstrations, opting for Firefox and Microsoft Edge.

Below is a list of changes between 2015 and 2018 editions provided you
say
I
should do it:

* I'll be using Windows OneCore voices for most speech demos.
* Chapter 1 (Intro) will be expanded and re-recorded to improve
recording quality, as well as adding additional information such as
command
line switches to start a portable copy after creating one and a note
on
Controlled Folder Access.
* Chapter 2 (Basics) will go over more touchscreen possibilities, some
command changes (including copying the contents of status bars) and
others.
* Chapter 3 (Objects and object navigation) will feature new examples,
especially more universal app examples.
* Chapter 4 (Browsing the web) will feature reading PDF documents with
Microsoft Edge, turning off single letter navigation commands on the
fly
and
elements list improvements.
* Chapter 5 (Apps) will feature new and updated examples.
* Chapters 6 and 7 (Configuration) will feature new settings,
including Windows 10 OCR and many others.
* Chapter 8 (tools) will feature content recognition.
* Chapter 9 (Add-ons) will feature new and updated examples, including
Remote Support add-on.
* Addenda may include a word on ARM64 support, development snapshots
and what not.

Comments are appreciated.

Cheers,

Joseph

I think you need to look at the errors its giving on the updates. If you
look at the details for the updates you normally have some way to see the
ones that failed and see the reason. it usually has an identity number and
you can look that up on the Microsoft site to find out what to do.

Its normally an update that has been installed out of sequence or at least
that was the last time I saw this happen. I took the machine back to just
before that update, stopped that update then allowed it to do the others and
then did the one left over. No I've no idea why this happens either.
Might be something totally different in your case of course, but you really
need a windows forum to find out more if Microsoft are no help.

Subject: [nvda] monthly microsoft updates problem

Hi list

I wonder if anyone could help me.

I got the usual monthly Microsoft updates, so when I did the normal
procedure by accepted the update and restart, or update and shutdown, it
isn't doing the updates.

Because most probably it got stucked.

Is there a way how to release that and do the updates normally?

I have windows 10 creator.

Thanks in advance

Next, I think that a little time needs to be spent in the snapshot
tutorial

still

find it cluttered and very hard to use.

Is Edge really any better for pdfs than Adobe? The big issue is as we

Firefox. Would you be using ESR or attempting to cover the new Quantum

Also of course I know that you are about to embark in a major upgrade
to

and

this is bound to start throwing unexpected spanners into the air to

Subject: [nvda] Request for comments: Should I record 2018 edition of
Welcome to NVDA tutorials set?

Cheers,

Joseph

Cheers,

Joseph

NVDA and Discord

Rayn Darren

Evening all,

Was wondering if anyone has used discord successfully with NVDA? I can get some of it to work, but it’s not 100% accessible. Any tips or perhaps add ons would be wonderful!

Thanks,

Rayn
