some messages are very slow in Outlook

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out. I'm still going
through and trying to clean out 11 years worth of emails from Outlook,
and in recent days I've come across several messages that slow down
NVDA's response time with Outlook, as in when I press the command to
read it hesitates for something like 10 seconds. If anyone uses Uber
with an email account that you have connected to Outlook, schedule a
ride and then try reading the email that is sent with Outlook. I found
one of those that I had saved and it reacted very slowly as I
described. If it makes any difference, I have "use UI automation"
turned on to prevent Outlook from crashing when certain HTML emails
are opened.

I'll take a stab at this, since this sounds exactly like a problem I
had years ago, according to the email I just found it looks like I was
running NVDA 2011.2. The email I found suggested that my NVDA.ini file
got screwed up, but wouldn't that get removed when NVDA is
uninstalled? If I remember right, uninstalling and reinstalling worked
for me, but clearly that hasn't worked for you. I know some programs
however, such as Audacity, leave your configuration profile after you
uninstall them, but I'm not sure if NVDA does that or not. I can't
believe it's been 10+ years since I've been using NVDA, and I had
forgotten some of the questions I had asked over the years on the
previous support lists run by Freelists.

laptop, and I really miss the synth ring. Also, I feel like JAWS isn't
as good on the web as NVDA. I had to get my husband's help with
accepting the terms of service for a public WiFi network, because I
couldn't even use the stupid JAWS cursor because of the aforementioned
caps lock JAWS key issue. I would have had no such issue with this
webpage with NVDA. If I couldn't navigate to it with the standard
keys, I could most-likeley have gotten to it with Object Nav. Arrowing
through the page with JAWS just got me to some explanatory text, and
the stupid accept terms of service checkbox, but never to the button
to finish the process of connecting. Anyhow, I'm hoping someone has
some suggestions.

Hello, Arianna. That really is frustrating. I guess my first question
is whether your output sound card is correct.

Pleas press control + NVDA key + s to reach the synthesizer menu. Tab
once to the audio output device & ensure that it's set to your
speakers/headphones of choice. Tab to ok & activate the button, &
let's see if that helps.

It's part of your subscription, but you still pay for that subscription, and are therefore paying for the book. You have every right to complain to Amazon and the publisher.

Followed by running the Com Reg fixing tool. It's quick, it's easy, and it solves all kinds of odd behavior problems with no further work. I have heard of some cases where you have to run it twice, but those cases are without logs, so I don't really know what was going on there.
But the point is: it's minimal impact, and takes 10 seconds, so why not run that first?

The third step should be restarting with add-ons disabled, as you pointed out in your followup email.

Reinstalling the software should, at best, be the fourth step, imo.

            Of course, if you haven't tried The Most Basic Troubleshooting Steps for Suspected NVDA Issues
then do so before uninstalling and reinstalling.  The issue could lie with an add-on.

          FYI, the group archives are public, so you do not have to be logged in to view and search them.

           Can't explain the crash with 2020.4.  I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling as a first step to see if the issue persists.

I'm not sure what's happening there. I don't use Edge regularly, but I just logged into my groups.io account with it and NVDA 2020.4.

Hi.  I recently updated my E-mail through my groups.io account, and now NVDA 2020.4 crashes when I try to log into groups.io.  I wanted to search the archive for something, rather than post a message.  I’m using Microsoft EdgeVersion 89.0.774.50 (Official build).

While I get your point, you bear at least some responsibility for this.  It is up to you (or anyone in your position) to craft a "launch statement" that is a lot more comprehensive than what you offered, which was short and cryptic and definitely appeared to be self-promoting.

All three of those things raise legitimate concerns and suspicions.  It is easy enough to craft a launch statement that addresses the kinds of concerns that have been raised before they are ever raised.  If much of what you said in the message I have quoted from had been included in your launch statement I can assure you this would have played out very differently.

The voice doesn't sound synthesized. And if it is, why would such a high quality voice be sold for five dollars. The voice sounds much better than voices being sold on the NVDA page for forty dollars, perhaps more.


I am not saying this isn't legitimate, but I'd want good verification.

That's different, and a legitimate concern.

I have advocated, for some time, with regard to add-ons (and it would apply here) that there should be a centralized place where all would be stored, but that there would be a vetted/safety and effectiveness tested and an "at your own risk" section.

There are scads of add-ons that have been created, and been being used safely for a long time, that their respective owners do not wish to submit for official vetting.  The same is obviously true for voices.

I bet that it could be counted on less than one hand the times when anything that has originated from "the community" whether vetted or not had malign intent or effect.  But I agree that one should know when and whether something has been vetted (which is not exactly the same as endorsed, but close) and not.  But it should be up to the end user to decide whether what the thing offers is important enough, to them, to try it if it is in the "at your own risk" section.

Centralized repositories for these sorts of things are advantageous for all involved and should be set up (period) but must also let the potential user know whether something has been vetted or not.  Unvetted seldom means "bad" or "malign."

crashes with basic operations

Hello NVDA Team,

 

Just so you know, I am getting crashes with NVDA when performing basic functions such as when trying to read my inbox in Outlook and filling in forms on webpages. Restarting NVDA solves the problem, but it is an annoyance. I am running Win10 with the latest NVDA. I keep my laptop clean of extraneous software.

I have thought about and the client does not matter to me. It is more the way that I can navigate between input and output and putting in command/scripts. I do not have a numpad at all.
