Yes!  You did it, thanks for the directions, I did not know about those commands, as I said before the layout of the program changed.  It works now.  Thanks thanks

Are you in the synthesizer dialog, control NVDA key s, or the voice dialog, control NVDA key v.

First, you move to SAPI 5 in the synthesizer dialog, then activate the ok button.  Then, open the voice dialog and find the voice you want in the list and activate the ok button.

I don't know what you have done but you may be looking in the wrong places.

I don't use the new version of NVDA but the latest version, and perhaps the one before, I don't know, uses a different interface for some settings.  I'll let those who use it discuss it further.

I am greatful for any help with these items.

I have a new computer running Windows 8.1 and have downloaded NDVA several times and the Windows sapi5 voyce will not showup.  I also can not seem to find it in my windows.

I have also downloaded  2 of the free voices from the NDVA site and properly used the manage apps to install them and they will not appear in the list of synthesizers, as a matter of fact the ESpeak does not appear either.

Finally the menus have completely changed from just a week ago, because I had downloaded NDVA for another person and the menus completely different? Any thoughts?  Thanks so much

Windows 10 autoplay notification

Chris Mullins

Hi

I know I should have checked before posting but a correction to the details below.  The notifications display time is in Settings/Ease of Access Display section not in Other Options which no longer exists.  This is as of Windows 10 1803.

Cheers

Chris

Hi

Apologies if the subject line is not the one recently on the list, I’ve deleted all the messages associated with the thread and can’t remember the actual subject text however I hope the following helps.  Someone was talking about pressing Windows+v to access the autoplay pop-up notification. And suggested it needed to be done quickly or it disappeared.  I found this on the net regarding the length of time notifications hang around which may solve the problem of accessing it before it disappears.

You control how long Windows 10 displays notifications on screen using a single drop-down menu, but it’s not an obvious one. Instead of being grouped with other notification settings, you’ll find it buried in the Windows accessibility settings. It makes sense in hindsight (arguably), but we’re not sure how anyone could be expected to think of looking there in the first place.

Click Start > Settings (or press Windows+I) to open the Settings window and then click “Ease of Access.”

settings_main

In the Ease of Access window, select the “Other options” tab and then click the “Show notifications for” drop down menu.

ease_of_access

The drop down menu lets you choose various timing options, ranging from 5 seconds to 5 minutes. Just pick how long you’d like pop up notifications to stay on screen.

set_timing

And that’s it! It’s just one little setting hidden away in a place you might never think to look for it, but hopefully it comes in handy.

Alternatively you could switch off autoplay notifications in Settings/System Notifications and Actions section then in   Settings/Devices autoplay section, set actions for different peripheral devices.

Cheers

Chris

Re: nvda installation problem

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

From the description this seems unlikely, as it did not work in the first place.
Assuming its an admin account then most people tend to only encounter issues with the UAC screen or updating when a desktop icon cannot be created, both of which are well known.

I just wonder if something else like bloatware which is often on new machines is interfering with installs. too many anti virus or security programs can cause some very odd things to happen, ie, if nvda has partially installed as you suggest, but cannot complete and the old bit cannot be stopped. I'd do a clean reboot of the machine and try then as a first step. However I have also noticed a number of new laptops seem to have dodgy sound drivers that clip the start of speech as well, though this is not the cause here from the description.
When a program is partly installed it can be a real pain to clean out the rubbish if you are not OK with delving into the diagnostics, even worse if its a screenreader and thus you have to rely on slow clunky narrator to do it!

Maybe I should add that he connects his terminal via USB.

Effectively, thru bluetooth, no driver is required.

Re: Updated the wiki

Nicolai Svendsen

Hi,

Out of curiosity, what is Google Chrome’s accessibility status based on? The page currently says that “works somewhat well with NVDA”, but what does that actually mean, and when was that written?

I use it on a daily basis, and I’m finding that it works far better on my machine compared to Mozilla Firefox, at least in terms of speed. Performance-wise, I haven’t noticed anything thus far. I’ve been able to do everything that I could with Firefox without exception. To me, that statement feels inaccurate, but I’m wondering about it. I used Firefox for years until I got tired of it.

I also disagree with Thunderbird as a recommended e-mail client. I completely switched away from it a couple of weeks ago due to freezes, slow response when typing, a big delay when deleting messages before the next focused message would be reported, etc. I was against doing this at first, since I’ve just been used to Thunderbird and how it operates for years.

Granted, my machine is six years old, but I feel the excellent performance, both by Windows 10 Mail and Google Chrome, speak to how well these applications stack up in comparison. I definitely have not been able to communicate and browse the web this quickly for the last many years, but Firefox and Thunderbird were the only alternatives I was comfortable with at the time, until I got curious enough and took the plunge.

I’m hoping I can get some insight on this. As my experiences go, I feel like that application support page should be updated to reflect this. I can’t really get behind these statements for either application, and I’m curious as to when these were actually edited. I can’t see earlier revisions than those made seven hours ago, and I feel a lot of these details were glossed over. More in-depth information would be appreciated on this page, especially for programs which provide similar functionality. Saying something works “somewhat well with NVDA” is fine, except that lacks a lot of useful details for people wanting to make an informed decision.

Thanks!

Nicolai

Hello,

I've got to using Microsoft Edge to read epub files lately.

There is a huge thing called Virtual Shelf something, but I didn't like it at all, so Edge has become my best friend when I want to keep the kinks and formatting of the ebook.

Otherwise I use Qread, which is a paid app, but works a treat if you are happy with a single file, where you can search the book, export to txt, and much more.

Excel database features

slery <slerythema@...>

Disclaimer: I am in the camp of "use a database program for databases and a spreadsheet program for spreadsheets"

Having said that, it has been several years since I have needed more than one database. In light of the imperfect accessibility (yes, I am still currently using MS Access) and the fact that there have been some implications in tech circles that may Microsoft may do away with access (in the near past, you have had to buy a higher level of office to get Access), I am considering moving this one database to Excel for better accessibility with NVDA.

Are there any tutorials or manuals that focus on the database features of Excel?
