Browse Dialogs with NVDA

Bob Cavanaugh <cavbob1993@...>

Hi all,
Okay, let's see if the third forum I post to is finally going to help
me solve this problem. First off a little background, about 15 months
ago after a Windows update, my downloads folder started being sorted
by date. It wasn't until just recently that I realized that it was
actually grouping by date before sorting by name. That being said,
right away I posted on the Microsoft help community and was told to
set the group by option in file explorer to none. I did that, and got
my downloads folder sorted by name again within file explorer.
However, when I go to open a file within an app such as Audacity, the
downloads folder is still grouped. So, the other day I finally decided
to try and fix this with another post on the Microsoft help community.
I was directed to the Windows 10 help forums, where it was pointed out
that there's a more options button within the mini explorers that
allows grouping to be turned off there, but normal keyboard commands
seemingly can't be used to access it. Can anyone help me out with
this? Btw, I updated to NVDA 2020.4 last night.

Jackie,

Absolutely correct.  And while I have no issue at all with any member soliciting information about whether others are having sudden issues with software they've been using forever, even if it's out of support, the only thing further to say is, "You need to update."

The group rules about this are very, very clear:
------

Unsupported versions of any software may only be discussed on the Chat Subgroup, not the main NVDA Group.

Windows:  Only Windows 8.1 and currently supported versions of Windows 10.  Members should refer to the Windows Lifecycle Fact Sheet to determine which versions of Windows are currently supported.  Information about the dates on which specific versions of Windows 10 reached or will reach their end of service dates is listed there as well and will be updated as new versions are released.

Note that it is acceptable to direct a user to the NVAccess or Microsoft sites where older versions can be downloaded, however, this is different than supporting a specific version of software or operating system.

NVDA:  NVDA has, at any given time, a single version under active support.  If a question arises about how to update to that version, and you’re on an earlier version, that will be permitted as transition problems can occasionally occur.

------

Those rules exist simply because there is a certain contingent of users (and I am not saying that Marcia is among them, because I don't know that, but we've all seen 'em) that simply will not accept two things:

1. All software has a finite service life.

2. It is entirely unreasonable to expect perpetual backward compatibility from any piece of software.  This is even more true now in the era of "Software As A Service," and it's not just Windows 10 that falls into that broad category.  The release schedule for NVDA has had that be what it is, in essence, for some time now.

We're now almost six years in to the Windows 10 era, and Windows 7 is officially completely out of support.  The Windows ecosystem is now the Windows 10 (with some Windows 8.1, but the writing's on the wall now for it, too) ecosystem, period.

It is essential that folks keep their systems up to date, and I have had one, and only one, Windows 7 machine that couldn't update to Windows 10, and that was due to the graphics hardware maker refusing to create a compatible driver.  Everything else would have happily gone along.

Marcia, please remember that Outlook 2010 and Windows 7 are no longer
supported. As such, newer versions of NVDA may not support these
either, and you may find yourself needing to use older versions to
maintain that functionality.

Re: nvda and the calculator app

Hi,

Are you talking about NVDA not saying “Display is …” whenever you enter numbers? If so, this is intentional. Imagine a situation where you are entering numbers with speak typed characters enabled. NVDA will actually announce numbers twice – the number you typed and the expression window content. This is caused by UI Automation implementation, and based on Calculator app source code and years of experience with this app, the app module for Calculator was modified so that NVDA will say “Display is …” when you press Enter, Numpad Enter, or Escape.

This change didn’t actually originate with NVDA 2020.4 – it was one of the first things included in Windows 10 App Essentials add-on in 2015 (shortly before its public debut in December 2015 to be exact). I was waiting for the right moment to submit the app module for Calculator to NV Access, and that came in 2019 when someone (not me) requested the current behavior. For this reason, I’m testing a version of my add-on with the bulk of Calculator app module code removed from the add-on to test compatibility with post-2020.4 releases.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi all. • In Windows 10 Calculator, NVDA will not announce progress of calculations if speak typed characters is disabled. (#9428)

You can create a profile configuration for the calculator app and enable the speak of characters, for example.

Yes, it’s gone. Look up the IBM TTS voice on GitHub. You will need to compile it yourself probably and add the appropriate dll into the recompile, but it’s a good voice and has the breathiness etc. there si a bug with voice boost, but over all it’s good.

Hi David,

No problem at all, and thanks for the clarification, it will help prevent others from investigating what you've already solved.  I was going to say I just tested this with NVDA myself and it clearly reported each radio button group as I moved between them, both in focus and browse modes.

I didn't think there was anything too odd about the form that another screenreader should have trouble with.... But I'm glad it works with NVDA at least - that's the main thing I can help influence and control!

All the best, and thank you for your generous donation, we very much appreciate it!

Quentin.

I don’t know if this is an issue in how the actual page is constructed or a bug with that other screen reader. If it’s the latter I sincerely apologize as it would definitely not be an issue with NVDA.

Hi. As I wanted to upgrade my copy of NVDA from the release candidate to the final 2020.4 release I decided to download the executable file from the Web site so that I could access it offline in the event that I should need to do a reinstall. I also decided that I wanted to make a donation to NV Access while doing so and I will say that I was successful in doing so.

On the donation form is a series of radio buttons for specific amounts along with one to specify a custom amount, which I’m fine with. The one thing that confused me is that there appears to be two separate groups of radio buttons in one list. The first group contains several amounts along with an “other” choice. Following that are more radio buttons in the same list, with another radio button labeled “other.” I gather that the first group of radio buttons are for one-time donations and the second group is for monthly donations but please correct me if I’m misinterpreting what I’m hearing.

The problem is that there is no explanatory text to differentiate these two seemingly separate groups. I kind of figured this out when for the second group Paypal indicated that I would be making regular donations to NV Access but the first group seemed like a one-time donation. If this is the case I’d like to make a suggestion that these be separated into two separate lists with explanatory text clearly indicating the purpose of each list: one time donations vs monthly donations.

Again, if I’m not interpreting this form correctly by all means please do let me know. I’m only pointing this out because those of us who are able to do so are quite happy to donate to NV Access due to how important NVDA is to so many people.
