Visual Studio vs Visual Studio Code

Carlos

Hello All:

Question for those here on list who are programmers.

Which is most accessible with NVDA?  Visual Studio or Visual studio code?

Thank You! In advance for reading/responding to my question!!!

Hi Kerryn,

I copied this from last October's In-Process re using OCR.  Basically:

To do OCR with NVDA 2017.4 on Windows 10:

1. Open the PDF file in Adobe Reader.

2. Press NVDA+r. NVDA reports “Recognising”. After a pause, NVDA reports “Result document”.
3. Although visually, the screen hasn’t changed, NVDA has placed the text recognised in the image in a “virtual document”. You can navigate around this just like a document in WordPad. Press NVDA+down arrow (laptop: NVDA+a) to read the whole document from the current point.
4. Press control+home to move to the top of the virtual document.
5. Press down arrow to move through and read the text line by line.
6. When finished, press escape to exit the virtual document.

Or, using Windows 7 or 8 OR NVDA earlier than 2017.3:

1. Open the PDF file in Adobe Reader

2. Press NVDA+r. NVDA reports “Recognising”. After a pause, NVDA reports “Done”.
3. Although visually, the screen hasn’t changed, NVDA has placed the text recognised in the image in a “virtual document”. You can navigate around this using the review cursor. Press numpad plus (laptop: NVDA+shift+a) to read the whole document from the current point
4. Press shift+numpad 7 (laptop: NVDA+control+home) to move to the top of the virtual document.
5. Press numpad 9 (laptop: NVDA+down arrow) to move through and read the text line by line.

With regard to "utilising the mouse arrow", could you please clarify exactly what you are trying to do?  Yes it is possible to do several things either with the mouse, or to the mouse and with further information, I can give you steps for that also.

Kind regards

Quentin.

You are assuming a sound would be wanted for every punctuation sign.  And at least in Engglish and many languages, there aren't that many.  Period, question mark, colon, semicolon quotation marks and you might want a sound for ellipsis.  You could have more sounds as well.  You could have sounds in the pronunciation dictionary so you can assign sounds for whatever you want.  The user could even put sound files in the program if he/she doesn't like what is provided.  Now let's see what kinds of sounds we might have  Bell, whistle, door close, door open, chime, and all sorts of variations such as high pitch bell, low pitch bell, car dor, a door such as in a house, and other people may come up with all sorts of other examples.  The world is full of distinctive sounds.  And JAWS has had such a feature for probably over a dedcade so this is not at all a novel idea.

I'm sure you were aware that there was a now dead comedian who made a lot of
money with his monologues where he substituted sounds for Punctuation!
Victor Borge'

Now my one problem with having a mode like this is, given the number of
different marks and their meaning in different circumstances in different
languages, it could need one heck of a  lot of individual sounds to cover
them all. I do know what you are getting at different sorts of brackets and
colons etc, are main candidates, with underscores being also useful.

Maybe this is add on territory ie a programmers version as most of us prefer
not to hear these greater thans etc all over the place, but obviously such
things are important in programming as are brackets and indents etc.

I agree with reading about Ccleaner.  I downloaded it; installed it and low and behold, AVG got installed.  It took me about two hours to remove it; I eventually had to use system restore, so my advice is be very, very careful.  Running nvda and windows 10, 1709; have a good evening all.

Kindle program and NVDA

ryan chou

Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could help troubleshoot an issue with the windows version of the kindle reader? I am posting on behalf of a friend.
Recently, my friend was having some issues with this thing, and couldn't actually read any books normally. Long story short, I sent said friend a portable copy of my NVDA installation, which seemed to have fixed the issue, and they were able to read books normally in browse mode.
However as of today, apparently the issue is back, and I have no ideas on what it could be, as I use the kindle reader too and I never had any issues at all. Restarting NVDA or the kindle program haven't fixed the issue, and the current book in question has already been read successfully so we do know it is supported. The only large difference I can think of is my friend using windows 7, and me being on 10.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi

I'm not normally given to “me too” messages. However, on this occasion I will make an exception.

Ann is absolutely spot on in praise of the NV Access training materials. Money very well spent. The content is clear, well-organised, reenforced with pratical exercises. Excellent work.

Thank you very much to all involved in producing these documents.

this one is by far the best. It includes operations I had wondered about, and some I had never heard of. I discovered little pieces of information I had always wondered about--like what is mirroring in the print dialog--and how to accomplish tasks I hadn't even thought about. The language is terse and to the point, leaving me sometimes to wish for a little hand holding; but reviewing the instructions always produces enough information to make my way through to success. I am totally blown away by the excellence and the incluusiveness of this document.

Cudos! Awesome! Wow!

p.s. My favorite program of all times is Excel. I am on my way to the store for the Excel tutorial. It should be a total blast!

Re: NVDA next snapshot and an extra sound

What do you mean what should you do.  If you just want to use the program with that voice, use it with the voice that is creating the error if the program is working properly.
If you are asking how to look at the log and report the error, someone who knows about that will have to discuss it.  I know very little about how that is done.

thought I should raise this very important point.

CCleaner, as do so many free programs now comes bundled with one or
more programs you probably don't want. Some of these programs cause
people problems as well.

Don't download and install the regular version of CCleaner. Use
either the portable version or the version that is called something

I have no issues. If you are going to submit a bug report or a problem please do the following format.

Summary:
Steps to reproduce
What you expected to happen
What actually happened
Regression
Version number of windows including build number
Ditto to nvda
Work arounds

I do this for every single issue for every single app I've submitted feedback on and the developers love it.

I just found the information with a Google search.  If you aren't using Windows 10, this specific procedure may not apply but a similar one ddoes. I know you are using Windows 10 but others reading this message may not be.  There is information for other versions of Windows on the site.  This information comes from a message by the other Gene where he reproduces the Windows 10 information from his web site that has lots of information related to NVDA.

Below will be what fixed mine on my windows 10 machine and also on a
ladies one.

I will also find the page with other fixes maybe the same or different.

Troubleshooting - NVDA says "unknown" or "pane" in all of your browsers,
Mozilla Thunderbird email client and other places
If for some reason you have problems with NVDA saying "unknown" or
"pane" check for the following symptoms:
.
In all of your browsers, or the Mozilla Thunderbird email client, no
matter what you do, you still hear "unknown" or "pane".
.
In the browser, email client and other menus you notice you cannot get
into your menus, or you are unable to use the quick navigation keys
.
When you have been told the page is loaded and notice strange behaviour
.
Mozilla Thunderbird saying unknown while you try to navigate it
.
Your applications key does not work with it being spoken out and other
strange behaviour in Windows
.
The running applications icons are not being spoken out
It might be a good idea to do the following:
Please note: If you are hearing "unknown" or "pane" (as discussed above)
NVDA might seem like it is still working properly but it may not be
completely in Windows and other programmes.
You could try the following solution which will allow you to re-register
your dll files in case they are causing the problem.
Press the Windows key then type the following into the search box. Type
in "command prompt". Once you have located command prompt, in the search
results, press the Applications key to bring up the context menu. Arrow
down to select "run as administrator" and press the Enter key. This will
take you to a command prompt window. This will not be spoken out. You
may need sighted assistance for this.
Type in the following command
for %x in (c:\windows\system32\*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %x
This should re-register all components in the system32 folder.
When it is finished, you can close the command prompt window with the
Alt + F4 key. You should notice now where NVDA was saying "unknown" as
in some examples given, NVDA should now read the icons in the running
applications area of Windows, speak the content of the webpage and
menus, and also in Mozilla Thunderbird and other places in Windows
including the Windows applications context menu.

My note:
I have never heard of closing a command prompt in Windows with alt f4. You can try it but if it doesn't work, type exit and press enter.

Consider context carefully and consider that a user may be confusing issues.  Users may present information that doesn't apply. In this case, I don't think synthesizers have anything to do with the message.  I think the user is assuming that they do, assuming that if something doesn't present proper material, you should try different synthesizers.  If the synthesizer is generally working, the problem isn't a synthesizer problem. It looks to me as though this is an unregistered dll problem.  After synthesizers are mentioned, the message says:
Nvda does not work properly with Google Chrome too and firefox.esr and
with
Outlook 2010 program.
What does this sound like?  Unregistered dlls.

Also, the message says that the problem doesn't occur with JAWS. What does that sound like?  Unregistered DLL files.  Will someone please send the information that is routinely sent in such cases? And if it doesn't solve the problem, attempting to register the dll files won't cause any problems.

Hmm, well, I do not know enough about Outlook to comment, but this sounds to
me like it might be windows related.
When we said reset, what we meant was that if you found it used to work and
now it does not, if you could take your machine back to a date before it
went wrong in nvda, then it worked, job solved, if not then there is
probably an issue with nvda.
Try creating a portable copy from a new version of the download. OK so some
things it cannot read since its not an installed copy but if it behaves as
expected, it most probably means there is corruption somewhere in the
installed copy. Somebody later on explains how to reset it. Also although
you do not use add ons, did you perhaps set up a profile?

That should also show up if it works with a portable copy too.

Re: NVDA Next Snapshot And An Extra Sound

Hmmm I'd prefur if I could have a choice of having the error on or not in case something does mean something.

Saying that, it appears win10 task manager in 17.09 is quite slow on my new ssd laptop I am using with my aunt, nothing else go to task manager and its just really slow starting  sometimes the system acts like its locking, this seems only to be a major issue if the process list is open though.

I don't use it enough but to be honest if its like that I may have to find another task manager I can use instead of windows one.

Maybe someone can try this  and report this, I rarely need task manager but its usefull if something crashes.

Dear friends, as I have stated that whenever I start NVDA, just before the dialogue of task bar, it gives me an extra sound.

I just wonder what is the indication of this sound?

The matter of fact is that since 2010 when I started to learn computer, I have been using JAWS.

Since launch of latest tutorial of Joseph Lee, I have become the fan of NVDA.

Secondly my Lisence of JAWS 2018 will expire in October this year and then I will not be able to have another JAWS lisence because of financial reasons, therefore I have time from now to October to learn and adopt the habit of switching over from JAWS to NVDA.

Because I’m new to NVDA, that’s why this extra sound disturbs me a lot.

The reason is so simple that is my mind is a kind of mind when a question is created, I never get rest until the answer of that question is given to it.

I therefore hope that my question will be dealt with swiftly!

If you use NVdA snapshots, the error sound is left on so people will know when an error occurs and can report it if they want.  the error will be in the log.  If you don't want to report it, you can just ignore it if the program works correctly.  Some errors don't affect program performance.

1. Open the PDF file in Adobe Reader.

2. Press NVDA+r. NVDA reports “Recognising”. After a pause, NVDA reports “Done”.
3. Although visually, the screen hasn’t changed, NVDA has placed the text recognised in the image in a “virtual document”. You can navigate around this using the review cursor. Press numpad plus (laptop: NVDA+shift+a) to read the whole document from the current point.
4. Press shift+numpad 7 (laptop: NVDA+control+home) to move to the top of the virtual document.
5. Press numpad 9 (laptop: NVDA+down arrow) to move through and read the text line by line.

The article is: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-5th-october-2017/

Regression

Hello Brain and Gene and others,

First, thanks for your trying to help.
To answer your questions brian:
I sure turn off Jaws and works with NVDA ONLY.
Second, the problem with NVDA OCCURS WITH ALL THE SYNTHS THAT I TRIED.
With Espeak, Microsoft Sapi 5 Etc.
Nvda does not work properly with Google Chrome too and firefox.esr and
with
Outlook 2010 program.
I believe that NVDA IS DAMAGED AND I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING TO REPAIR IT OR
TO
RESET MY PC.
To reset my pc, I will go when I don't have any other solution.
But again, Jaws 2018 works very well with all the programs I have in my
pc.

If my problem was discussed here, I'll be happy to get the solution as
Gene
worte here and I'll be much thankful for any help.

Not really, but if we knew what exactly the issue you are having is,
somebody might be able to give you an educated guess as to what is going
on.

Do you have the latest version of the windows 10 essentials add on
installed?
Also which synth are you using and do you turn off jaws when using nvda.
However a really detailed description of the problem is what we need on
cases like this.

Dear all,

I have windows10 home edition 64 bits.

Jaws 2018 works very well.

Nvda, 2017.4 or any snapshot, don't work properly.

My question:

Every month, I am doing disk cleanup and use the file system cleaning
too.

I delete it and make after that defrag or optimize my SSD C: drive.

can NVDA be damaged with this action I'm doing monthly?

Again, Jaws is not damaged and works very well but NVDA, does not work
properly with some programs as: firefox, google chrome, ms outlook
2010 Etc.

I use to delete my restore points and create manually one.

Thanks for any explanation or help for my isuue with NVDA.

You can place any shortcut on the desktop even from a portable installer.. But the shell access might not be there, no.

Gene has some good precortionary information about installing c cleaner. I would like to add a little more to this information. Many of these free programs, whether they be slim versions, light versions, or portable,in recent times are coming loaded with mal ware. This wasn't always the case and there may be still some that are free of malware but now this depends on how the programmer compiles the installer. Here's what you can do, use an unzipping program, I like 7 zip, try to unzip the installer of the program that you want to install. If that works out, you'll have a folder with all the files including the main executable. Most of the time you could just run the program, there won't be any malware to worry about because you didn't use the installer to install  the program. When you run the program this way, in most cases it will create a settings/data folder for it's operation, letting you know about the folder that there's nothing to worry about. In fact it could be a good thing if there's setting files such as i n i files that you might want to edit.I don't want to get to far a field, but I want to say something else. Just this last week, Roger was having problem with cdex to run in windows 10. Well it was either that day or the next day, I did a little looking around and found the latest version of cdex, it is v1.99,  at the time had been out less than 24 hours. I donloded both versions, the main and portable versions,  and both versions  are loaded with malware, however if you can't uncheck the box of which there's 2 or 3, if you can't uncheck them using your screen reader, The good news is you could just unzip this one and run it. It runs very fast and smooth, under the very latest windows 10 64 bit. When you first run it, it will create that settings/data folder, and the great news is that you can edit the i n i files to your liking. This is very good if your main drive is ssd and you want your music folder  to be on the drive, that's not your main drive. The only other thing I think and Roger has probably checked this is, is to go in the settings and make  sure the burner you want to rip from is the one that is selected. If not selected, go ahead and select it.In closing if I can help in any way with any of this. Just let us know. If anyone wants it, I can zip up my copy and put it up on sendspace. Thanks for reading and happy safe computing.

Next time you get it, look at the log and see what is going on. Set logging level to debug then restart nvda for the most comprehensive results obviously.

If I’m getting error every time, then I should stop using that snapshot and start using stable NVDA.

I hope that my question will be entertained swiftly.

I am using.
NVDA version next-14835,560ed22a

And hear nothing but of course it could be you have fallen foul of the new postpone update code error in the snap a couple previous. I had to do a manual update to the one before the above then it updated ok.

If its not that then maybe an add on is being bad on the new snap. Try restarting with add ons disabled then you can put them on or take them off till it goes away, assuming of course it did!

NVDA Next Snapshot And An Extra Sound

inamuddinInam Uddin
