I've seen this issue. I. have to restart nvda every single time this happens. I did report it on github about a month or 2 ago. Basically what I think happens is you cannot hear what you have tyhped, it looks like ti si frozen but you can select the text and read it that way, right?

Tab out, shift tab back in (or use a method of your choosing to exit the edit box, then jump right back in to it).  It's a workaround when the problem arises, but a simple one that I have yet to see not work.

And as you've just noted, this seems to be something about how at least one Chromium-based browser does things, and those use a very different rendering engine than Firefox does, which could account for the difference.

I'm not saying this shouldn't be looked into, but there is a quick and easy workaround.

You are talking about the editor being used, evidently.  When I encounter an editor that has this problem, I type and review my comment in Notepad, copy it to the clipboard, then paste it into the edit field on the web site.

There was a discussion of this recently (and I need to find it, as I know I was part of it).

What are you expecting to hear?  I know that if NVDA is not set to read out letters as you type them, there is no way for it to know that a word is complete until you either hit space within an edit box, or tab out of it and then go back to it.  Words get recognized when they "become words" via whitespace of some kind being entered, or when you leave an edit box.  And when you leave an edit box with instant focus (in forms mode) being placed on another edit box makes the screen reader believe, quite logically, that this is what is important now, so it essentially "shuts itself up" before it even could say what you've tabbed out of.

That Escape is another way of signaling that the word is complete, but you have not yet left that edit box, so the word is read.

It's very similar for a much larger text box, where each word is not read until it "becomes a word" via separator, and the whole content of the box only if you do something to exit the box and come back to it, or to move back to the start of the text within the box, and do a "read all".

This is with sub foldrs located under the inbox and with the tree branch closed with the left arrow.

Does anyone else experience anything like this? This occurs with all installed synthesizers and voices and with variation of punctuation with all, some, most and characters. It stops only when I turn punctuation to none.

I would like to kindly request that this be either taken private, to the Chat Subgroup, or both.

I'm all for rehoming equipment like this (and am actually in the process of doing so as executor for a dear friend's estate), but it has nothing to do with NVDA.

I've also merged the other topic into this one, as it's really not a separate topic, and subject lines should not be used as though they're part of a message body.  Doing so creates an entirely separate topic.

Re: Oddity With NVDA And Thunderbird with Inbox status Line

Hi.

This is not a Thunderbird issue. In NVDA 2020.4, the CLDR emoji annotation was updated to version 38, which may have resulted in this symbol being recognised and spoken as an emoji, whereas it was probably ignored before. As discussed, the best fix is to just increase the symbol level of the emoji above what you have it set to (for example, to Most if you have it set on the default which is Some).

For the record, nor do I at this point.  The inconsistent behavior with what NVDA is announcing when Thunderbird is not even involved is enough for me to say that this is most likely to be an NVDA problem.

I hope that some of our regulars who are intimately tied to NVAccess have been reading this topic (and I'll have to rattle cages, too).  This is a case where I could no sooner come up with a coherent, short, problem description and set of replication steps than fly to the moon under the power of my arms.  There's a consistent issue, but an inconsistent output from NVDA, which makes it particularly odd.

Hi,

the easiest solution to this oddity, that was suggested by our friend DJ Raf in the italian list, is the following:

1 press NVDA+n;

2 choose Preferences, then Punctuation and symbols;

3 press shift+tab to go to the search box and type filled down;

4 press tab, and you should be on the symbol that you are looking for. If you are not on the right position, press up/down arrow to locate it. You can also search for the word filled only, but you'll have to press down arrow about 12 times;

5 press tab twice and select "most" or "all" with up/down arrows. I think that this depends on your current punctuation verbosity. If it is set to "some", the option "most" should be O.K.;

6 press tab to the O.K. button and press enter.

I hope that it'll work for you as it worked for me.

Ciao.
