Re: Important: NVDA 2018.1.1 is for Windows 10 only

Hi,
It isn't NVDA that has control over which version you'll get when you
update; rather, NV Access server is responsible for that.
Cheers,
Joseph

Yes but this does not explain the main issue about how come a machine
running windows 7 that had not updated to 22018.1, updated to 2018.1.1 did
it?

I think this is where the confusion has occurred. I have to suspect
therefore that it is something in the 2018.1 that stops it seeing the new
version and any 2017.x has no such code.
Given that, would it really have bothered anyone to have had another update
on windows 7? The whats new is quite specific after all. all this has merely
sewed the seeds of confusion.

Subject: [nvda] Important: NVDA 2018.1.1 is for Windows 10 only

Hi everyone,

For the below notice, it should be treated as coming from a Windows
Insider
and an NVDA developer. Due to massive confusion surrounding cases of
inability to obtain NVDA 2018.1.1 on some systems, I'd like to clarify a
few
things regarding this matter. As it affects everyone, please read this
message to the end (and please do share this far and wide):

In March 2018, as part of Windows 10 Version 1803 development, Microsoft
made a change to Windows OneCore speech synthesizer. Specifically, the
sample rate of this synthesizer was lowered from 22.05 KHz to 16 KHz,
causing I and other Insiders to perceive the voice as having funny pitch
issues. According to Microsoft (as noted by NV Access), this change was
intentional, and was subsequently pushed to Insiders running post-1803
builds as well.

Because of high impact of this change, I requested that NVDA 2018.1.1 be
released for those upgrading to Windows 10 Version 1803. NV Access staff
and
several Insiders agreed, hence the point release. However, because it only
affects Windows 10 (first of all, OneCore voices are only available on
Windows 10, and since this is a late change for 1803 customers), 2018.1.1
(stable release) will show up on Windows 10 only (including build 17133,
the
RTM build for 1803). For those using master or next snapshots are already
running 2018.1.1 code (in fact, both branches are running 2018.2
development
code with varying levels of testing done on features), and 2018.2 stable
(late May 2018 at the earliest) will include 2018.1.1 code.

Technical: previously, OneCore synthesizer support module had a hard-coded
value for sample rate (22050 hertz), which caused problems when sample
rate
was changed. Now it'll consult internal wave player headers to determine
which sample rate to use to play OneCore speech waves.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: 2018.1.1 out yet?

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I have now done this. So I can keep things up to date.
However it has not been made clear that the update was not going to even be offered to windows 7 people. I think this is a mistake, though well intentioned, as it puts people on different versions and also can cause confusion since we have had updates before that do not apply to some operating systems etc, and this is after all indicated in the whats new.

Also of course if like me you have a little used windows 7 machine running last years updates, the 1.1 is offered to those machines, making it even more confusing.

Just saying that it is unclear to me what the criteria is for offering it to windows 7 users, and I am fairly well versed in things, so anyone else is probably well confused.

What logging level do you have set. I see not enough keypresses in this log.
Debug is what \I tend to use for clarity.

I normally only hear unknown when the actual display changes while nvda is trying to read it. I do not know the speed of the machine in question, but I found a great improvement in spurious unknowns and panes by simply turning off all unnecessary animations and effects through the ease of access centre.

hi there,
I'm new to the list. Recently I put a bullet in my failing windows 7 machine and upgraded to win 10: Version 1709 OS Build: 16299.125. I've been experiencing a slight nuisance however. whenever I use the windows+x menu to, say, launch command prompt under administrator, I hear an unknown when i enter the menu and an unknown when the menu closes.

I've tried re-registering my dlls, tried deleting my config and running in defaults but no go. I've also disabled cortana, for what its worth. I can live with it but I'd like to know if anyone else is experiencing this issue. i paste below my log. this also sometimes happens when i launch firefox 52.0 extended release from the run dialogue. I'm not aware of this programme, what does it do, is it a bit like mp3 direct cut. that can alter levels without re encoding and causing losses, though I find it a bit illogical even with the add on, I have to say. A really easy version of this is truly needed.
it could be of course that the software you mention simply does not expose suitable controls for a screenreader in the first place. If you want to see a totally useless regression by a company, compare the new revo uninstaller with the old version.

Also, it isn't clear if you are just hearing the word unknown spoken at times and everything works correctly.  You said you hear the word but didn't say that when you do, there are any other problems.  If all you hear is the word unknown with no other problems, there is nothing to worry about.

Hi

is there any other areas where it says unknown? like in the following example

there is also some steps you have to do and it needs to be follered to a T. If this does not do it there is another one that might.

but if you are not getting any of these other things happening it might be some ting else.

If for some reason you have problems with NVDA saying “unknown” or “pane” check for the following symptoms:

In all of your browsers, or the Mozilla Thunderbird email client, no matter what you do, you still hear “unknown” or “pane”.

In the browser, email client and other menus you notice you cannot get into your menus, or you are unable to use the quick navigation keys

When you have been told the page is loaded and notice strange behaviour

Mozilla Thunderbird saying unknown while you try to navigate it

Your applications key does not work with it being spoken out and other strange behaviour in Windows

The running applications icons are not being spoken out
It might be a good idea to do the following:
Please note: If you are hearing “unknown” or “pane” (as discussed above) NVDA might seem like it is still working properly but it may not be completely in Windows and other programmes.
You could try the following solution which will allow you to re-register your dll files in case they are causing the problem.
Press the Windows key then type the following into the search box. Type in “command prompt”. Once you have located command prompt, in the search results, press the Applications key to bring up the context menu. Arrow down to select “run as administrator” and press the Enter key. This will take you to a command prompt window. This will not be spoken out. You may need sighted assistance for this.
Type in the following command
for %x in (c:\windows\system32\*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %x
This should re-register all components in the system32 folder.
When it is finished, you can close the command prompt window with the Alt + F4 key. You should notice now where NVDA was saying “unknown” as in some examples given, NVDA should now read the icons in the running applications area of Windows, speak the content of the webpage and menus, and also in Mozilla Thunderbird and other places in Windows including the Windows applications context menu.

I just checked on my Windows 7 machine, which is running a ribbon version.  It is one of the build 2015 series and that build is a ribbon version.  There are different versions in a build.  If you want the 2015 version I have a link for, I can send the link.  But let's be sure if you want a menu or ribbon version, as I said.

Please don't change subject lines unless the subject of a thread changes.  It starts a new thread in the archives and it causes e-mail programs, when people are reading threads by conversation to show a new conversation.  If you want to address someone and a thread is in progress, please address them in the message body such as:

Please send me, etc.

If you are starting a completely new thread and you believea message will be of interest to only one person, you may want to address them in the subject line.  Otherwise, please don't change it.

I don't know enough about UIA issues in Windows 10 to say much except that I don't think the user can do anything.  they are problems between UIA in Windows 10 and NVDA and they must be corrected by Microsoft, the NVDA developers, or both working together.  If I'm wrong, I expect that I'll be corrected.

Thanks for the response, I haven’t updated windows or anything recently. I did try to uninstall and reinstall and it didn’t seem to make a difference. I am not the person who had mentioned the issue earlier though. If it is a UIA issue could you tell me a little bit more about that including any of the fixes?

Thanks again!

I doubt that will stop the problem.  I suspect this is related to a problem discussed recently deling w2ith UIA issues.  Are you, the person with the problem, using Windows 10?  Did this problem start after a specific event such as a major update of NVDA or an update of Windows?

I said, are you, the person with the problem, then I went on with my questions.  I said, the person with the problem, to address that person.  If I had thought you had the problem, I wouldn't have said, the person with the problem.  I said it because I was addressing that person with questions.  If I had thought you had the problem, I would just have said "have you" and then I would have asked my questions because I was addressing you, as I was in the earlier part of my message.

Hi, Gene,

No, I'm not the one who had the problem. I forgot who it was right now.

I doubt that will stop the problem.  I suspect this is related to a problem discussed recently deling w2ith UIA issues.  Are you, the person with the problem, using Windows 10?  Did this problem start after a specific event such as a major update of NVDA or an update of Windows?

I'm not having this problem but here's something you can try. Uninstall NVDA and then try reinstalling it. Hopefully this should fix the problem.

Hello,

I am having an issue with NVDA not reading what is on my screen. It will be working normally, and then randomly will only announce key presses instead of whatever the focus item is. Is anyone else having this issue, or have any idea on what may be causing this?

Thanks for the help!
