Well today I woke up expecting a big update.

But except for adobe flash all updates including ms office seem to be on hold.

An article suggests though that windows 1803 update has come and gone without any release.

No one has any idea, current opinions range from windows team restructure to the fact spring update 1803 doesn't exist and there is a new name being sort to a serious bug in the system.

The net seems to be super quiet to.

I just updated the workstation well 2 of them since I have a remote box here for the big update and nothing.

As to reguards to your system it depends what you have.

For the hp remote here, no drivers have been released today.

No system updates, nothing bar the standard run of the mill security protections you'd expect for a patch tuesday.

Then again, who knows.

If nothing happens by 11-12 pm my time I think we can safely take today off the list.

I don't think anything is coming today.

For those who haven't tried the latest Windows 1803 Insider, there's a new app called Cortana Show Me which is extremely nice for anyone new to Windows 10.  It's a step-by-step video guide using Cortana for changing settings and works very well with NVDA.  As of yet, you can't use your voice, however, after installing from the App store and launching Cortana Show me, tab over to and choose Settings category, tab over to a second list containing individual settings.  Once you hit Enter, Cortana will both give you step-by-step instructions on changing a setting as well as walk you through it.  Rather cool.

NVDA often says unknown and then, when you wait for a brief time, whatever is supposed to happen happens.  Have you tested to see what happens?  When you hear unknown, wait ten seconds to see if whatever is supposed to happen happens.  Yesterday, you said something about having to issue a program close command twice.  What we don't know is if the second time is doing anything.  If you just wait many seconds and don't do anything, you may find that what you expect to happen happens.  Part of being a good blind computer user is to know what matters and what doesn't.  So far, we don't know if this matters or is just irrelevant speech.

There may be nothing to be done at this time except to ignore it.

I think the tables are being read properly. The page has, evidently, changed. I see the same thing with older versions of NVDA and Firefox. In addition, I looked at the table without using table commands. No additional information is presented in the table looking at it without using table commands. If the table contained other columns, they would have been readable somewhere in the table.

The question is, do you now need to hover a mouse over a team name or get the information in some other way?

Hi Group,

If you visit the address: http://www.espn.com/mlb/standings

tables for this page are not rendered properly. What you get is a table
with 18 rows and 1 column that contains the team name only in one column
and no navigation is possible for determining the records and
statistics. This table is followed by a series of tables containing the
statistics. This renders standard table navigation keystrokes (control
+ alt + left/right/up/down arrows) useless. I believe this is new in
NVDA 2018.1.1. I did not notice this as recently as last January with
the NFL standings on ESPN nor was the bug present last year in the Fall
during the baseball season.

I am using Windows 10 with latest updates and this occurs with both
Firefox and Edge browsers.

Could it be that you made the dictionary for an editor program, and there is a separate dictionary for the Internet program you are using?
I know that Jaws uses program specific dictionaries, so perhaps NVDA does too.

Hi all,

I'm unhappy ... I'm having problems with my smiley faces! I'll use my FB post about it and include a bit of NVDA related info into it.

Giles Turnbull is feeling unhappy.
who am I unhappy with? Facebook, of course! I've noticed that when I type a smiley face with a colon and a right parenthesis, Facebook has started stripping that out of my post or comment. It'd be fine if it was doing some techno jiggery pokery and turning it into a propper emoji but,as far as I can tell, it isn't!
Sod's law says as I try to prove the point by doing it here it'll not vanish ... but normally I'll type a word followd by a space, followed by the colon and then the right parenthesis, and as I'm typing it NVDA tells me there is a colon and a right paren (or if I'm using say all it'll say "smiley face" since I've added that into the dictionary) ... but as soon as it posts NVDA reads the word and then a single space and that's it.

My sighted friends tell me that indeed there is a smiling face so FB IS converting it, but why does my NVDA not identify that there is a graphic or even one of those characters that are silent but you know they are there (like accented characters)?

Here's the transcript from the speech viewer reading the FB post:

Giles Turnbull is feeling unhappy.

Sod's law says as I try to prove the point by doing it here it'll not vanish ... but normally I'll have the space before where my colon would be, then a space where the colon should be and then the next word ...
Can anyone confirm whether there is a ascii smiley face, or a pictorial smiley face, as the last thing in this post?

Thanks for any suggestions / observations :) ... I'm using NVDA 2018.1 on Win10 and Firefox 59.0.2 (64-bit)

Hi Group,

If you visit the address: http://www.espn.com/mlb/standings

tables for this page are not rendered properly. What you get is a table with 18 rows and 1 column that contains the team name only in one column and no navigation is possible for determining the records and statistics. This table is followed by a series of tables containing the statistics. This renders standard table navigation keystrokes (control + alt + left/right/up/down arrows) useless. I believe this is new in NVDA 2018.1.1. I did not notice this as recently as last January with the NFL standings on ESPN nor was the bug present last year in the Fall during the baseball season.

I am using Windows 10 with latest updates and this occurs with both Firefox and Edge browsers.

For those who haven't tried the latest Windows 1803 Insider, there's
a new app called Cortana Show Me which is extremely nice for anyone
new to Windows 10. It's a step-by-step video guide using Cortana for
changing settings and works very well with NVDA. As of yet, you
can't use your voice, however, after installing from the App store
and launching Cortana Show me, tab over to and choose Settings
category, tab over to a second list containing individual settings.
Once you hit Enter, Cortana will both give you step-by-step
instructions on changing a setting as well as walk you through it. Rather cool.

HI,

I am posting in both lists so maybe someone can tell me how to do this in either environment.

I want to make my Facebook show me newsfeed posts in order of their posting rather than in a seemingly random order. How can I do this in a browser using NVDA or else on my Iphone 6 using the Facebook app? I do not care which I use to do this but sure would appreciate learning how to do it.

I have been told my my daughter that there is a setting for this but I can't find it in either environment. She isn't around locally to help me figure it out.

Thanks.

Re: announcing end of lines in Scite editor

Dave Grossoehme

Good Morning:  If you aren't receiving a line return or line feed at the end of the line, then it possible your editor uses a backslash chacter for the end of line chacter.  Without knowing which program you are using it's hard to answer your question.

Well it depends I guess you have to look in the editer options it would have to do with how the symbon is rendered for nvda to read.

Simplest way would be if there was a dictenary for that program if you can have a spaciffic definition for a particular program I am not sure if thats possible, but you could define the word empty to end of line or do it for the global deffinition and when anything is empty it will be end of line instead.

Thats not going to really work that well.

We need to find what that symbol actually is that is generated.

Is it generating the standard carrage return or linefead, cr/lf symbol for example.

crlf symbols usually at least when I did communications and things back in dos usually mean, new line, line end, end of line or simply an empty space depending on the os, unix/linux, windows or dos.

In these days, windows/dos has almost the same charset with windows having more of them and linux has a few more.

However depending what this thing was developed for, ie unix that could explain the issue you are having, things are translated that symbol may not be translated as such so there may be that issue to worry about.

Ofcause if you can get a document with just that symbon in it and send it at whoever handles the symbol database then it should be ok.

What happens if you create a document with a few new lines or line breaks in them and view it in another text editor.

Ie notepad, if the symbol is still empty, then its a symbol issue but if the symbol is read correctly, it could simbly be what the editor is outputting to be translated in which case not much we can do.

If the symbol from scyte you get in notepad back is just utter crap then it could be an untranslated symbol probably from unix or something.

The next thing to do is send it back here and get someone to find out what that symbol comes from, latx for example has different symbols to text and other programs may have different symbols based on age to a point, etc.

So if you find that out then the symbol can be added and your issue is solved.

What I fear is that its just what the program outputs at nvda in which case nothing can be done really.

Helllo all,

Is here some option to set classic End of line character in scite to make it announce new line the same way as for example in notepad?
