hi.
which version of openoffice is it?
openoffice since version 4.1.0, support accessibility without extra
programs like java access briedge.

helps. Normally though, on a new installation sensible defaults occur.

More details of the system etc, and portable or installed version might also

be useful, along with the version of nvda in use.

I am helping a new user of NVDA. It speaks application names etc, and it
echoed letters as I type in OpenOffice Writer, but it doesn’t speak letters,

words or lines as I move around a small doc using cursor keys, up/down keys

or Ctrl with cursor keys. Any tips where to look? Thanks, Vernon

Re: Nvda and Vocalizer: how to buy just one Voice

Felix G.

Hi!
This chaos is part of the reason why I am sticking with Espeak at this time, even though I have on different occasions considered buying extra voices. But when I tried CodeFactory Eloquence it performed badly on my system, and when I tried the Tiflotecnia voices I had to install a specific version of the .Net Framework, which struck me as odd as I don't see why that would be required for a voice to work which also runs on embedded systems where .Net is unknown.
Also, on multiple occasions I've seen discussions about problems with Vocalizer voices being urgently directed off list, which triggered my skepticism so I chose to wait and observe.
Best regards,
Felix

Re: NVDA on the El Braille

Justin Harris <justin171185@...>

Yes, very frustrating. I finally did figure out how to write numbers in
the Spanish computer Braille code, but yuck! Adding dot 6 to everything
but 0, and for 0, dots 3-4-6-7-8. Just to much, and in NVDA, it just
works. For a while I was having to plug in an external keyboard and use
it that way, but with NVDA enabled, that has lessened quite a bit. Now
just whenever I get stuck. And yeah, it will be interesting trying to
learn all those new commands.

Since you are also an El Braille user, perhaps you can also hhelp me out
with this... how do I go about using the focus 14 with a bluetooth
device while still inside the El Braille? Can I just do it as normal?
How do I switch back and forth between the two?

I'm confused about your JAWS issue with no spanish braille, because
JAWS18 uses libluis, which I am surprised to hear doesn't have
anything but computer braille in Spanish.

To be able to cycle between JAWS and NVDA, assign one of the
elbraille buttons to launch NVDA. Otherwise, you won't be able to
start NVDA with JAWS already running, as two screen readers are
unable to do anything that makes sense with one braille display.
You'll need close JAWS first then start NVDA using that elbraille
button. If you need to go back to JAWS, close NVDA and use the
Elbraille Rescue Menu (hold down e1, and use your volume keys to find
JAWS Restart, then hit E4 to execute.

Have fun learning the new gestures for that NVDA add-on though, I
tried and gave up, mostly because I prefer JAWS at this point anyway
but, it's all very different and quite a headache for those already
used to doing it the JAWS way.

I can't keep up with this list much. If you want to ensure a response
from me about further discussion of the Elbraille, be sure to include
my email address directly. If it's on topic, and you also sent it to
the list, I'll come into the folder for this and find it and respond
on list.

Hope this is useful.

Hello,

I recently purchased an El Braille from Freedom Scientific, and over
all, I think it is an amazing product. Hardware specs aren't much to
speak on, but for what it does, not a bad product at all. However,
there
is one major issue I have run in to. That is, the lack of Spanish
Braille entry support in JAWS. Called up VFO, only to be told that if I
wanted to use JAWS in another language, I would have to buy another
license from a distributor in Latin America. I informed them that no, I
was able to get Spanish JAWS to activate here in the U.S, (by keeping
format options set to English-US, and in almost every way, it works.
However, even in the Spanish version of JAWS, the only Braille entry
offered is computer Braille. While I am used to, and much prefer having
my OS in Spanish, and can read Spanish Braille, I have no idea how to
type certain things in eight dot, aka computer, Braille. And it seems
that VFO just didn't want to deal with it. Even contacted a distributor
in Argentina, only to be told that since I didn't buy the license from
them, that they could not offer support.

So, that got me thinking. I have used NVDA for years. the commands are
already more familiar to me. Granted, I had never used it with a
Braille
display before, bbut I thought... this thing runs Windows. What can
stop
me from putting NVDA on it and doing things that way? I detached the
focus 14 and took NVDA with the focus 14 for a quick test drive.
Spanish
input and output work perfectly so far as I could tell..

So, here are a few things I have noticed.

1. There doesn't seem to be any support for simulating a press of a
function key from the Braille display.

2. It does not seem possible to do keystrokes which require several
modifiers at once, (alt + tab, alt + f4, ctrl + C, etc. Am I missing
something, or is my assesment correct? Does anyone else on this list
have an El Braille? I wonder if an NVDA addon could be produced to make
it play nicer with this particular device.

There are several reasons one might wish to do this. I already
explained
my reasoning, but being that there are only 2 gb of ram on the device,
NVDA is a much lighter program, not so much of a resource hog. Also, a
lot of the NVDA commands seem to be much more intuitive. A W-chord (for
Windows makes lots more sense than right shift + dot 4. E-chord for
escape, makes a lot more sense than the Z-chord used by Jaws.

Thanks,

Justin

Gene

I don't like the way book marks are laid out and I tried using the book marks search feature but, at least in the version I tried it with, the feature appeared to be inaccessible.  I also don't like the lack of short cut and accellerator keys for some items in menus.  It's been years since Chrome has been around and the google accessibility developers still haven't implemented a short cut or accelerator command for book marks, at least as far as I know.  I haven't followed Chrome much for awhile.

In addition, though I don't use history much, I still don't want it displayed as a web page when I do use it.

I regularly use the book marks search feature in firefox and I find it so useful that I never organize book marks any longer.  If a book mark isn't conveniently available where it is, I use the search feature.

As far as settings are concerned, I'm not sure if I have an opinion about which I prefer, the firefox layout or the Chrome web page layout.  But for me, history and book marks are important enough that I use firefox.

You say you don’t like the Chrome interface. To be very clear/honest, neither did I at first, but the more I’ve been using Chrome, the more I’m growing to swear by it!

I’m just curious what exactly you don’t care for. Is it the fact that things are now mainly laid out in web views instead of multi tab dialogs? If so, that through me for a bit of a loop as well at first until I got used to it, so yeah. That would be a fair statement if so.

Second, did I perhaps miss something here? I thought F123 was a really old, and all be it also, very dead last I looked, distro of Linux that was made specifically for the blind. And before anyone gets OT asking me, no, I don't know if the packages included with it would be up to date, nor how far a sudo apt[get update would take you. I don't even know if apt is included. It might use either yum, or pacman. Anyway, that's not for this list though, so I digress. Point is, it's pretty old, but as far as a Chrome extension with that name, I'm curious what this thing does.

Chris.

Re: Nvda and Vocalizer: how to buy just one Voice

Antony Stone

So, who's the actual original source of these voices, then?

I thought "vocaliser" was the brand name for the voices, and that Codefactory
and Tiflotecnia were simply resellers - ie: passing on the same goods, in the
same way you can buy the same laptop in different shops, maybe for different
prices, maybe with different warranties, but at the end of the day the thing
you get is just the same.

Spend money wisely.

Re: soule seek question

I don't use QT, only nS. Curious to know about your success with QT as I couldn't get much out of it.

On NS, can you find the search tab? When you activate it, a box should come up where you can enter a name.
I don't think you can tell Soulseek what type of file to search for, but it will work if you use an extension. Soulseek doesn't differentiate between types of files shared by its users, as far as I know. You can search for specific names of things, or browse file lists of users. I know you can search for a username as well, but I never do this, personally. I just use the file search. I do have some 'favourite users" and I've added them based on the type of files they share or if I know them personally.

Hi everyone,

For those using NVDA next snapshots and Enhanced Touch Gestures add-on may have noticed that, when you open Touch Interaction category from new Settings Panel, NVDA may emit an error sound. This problem has been resolved in ETS 18.04 (along with localization updates):

Hi List,

Why does not NVDA recognise the add on's you have installed for NVDA so that when an add on is updated, the updated add on if installed on your PC/laptop could not be updated (an announcement informing that the add on, do you want to install the updated version automatically?

What does it do in other software? I'm suspicious of the office program as there have been many versions of it and some are not very accessible at all.
What about web browsing, notepad or wrdpad. if the same is happening I suggest a look at the preferences menu and toggle a few things and see if it helps. Normally though, on a new installation sensible defaults occur.

More details of the system etc, and portable or installed version might also be useful, along with the version of nvda in use.

I am helping a new user of NVDA. It speaks application names etc, and it echoed letters as I type in OpenOffice Writer, but it doesn’t speak letters, words or lines as I move around a small doc using cursor keys, up/down keys or Ctrl with cursor keys. Any tips where to look? Thanks, Vernon
