Hi everyone,
The next installment in Welcome to NVDA
2018 tutorial set is now available from
www.josephsl.net/tutorials. This one (part 5) is a bit
livelier than the last one, as it covers a diverse set of
features, including more than 20 applications, several
add-ons, and couple NVDA features.
Changes from 2015 edition:
- Completely
redone and reorganized, including division into three
themes: Microsoft Office, universal apps, and other apps and
tools.
- Microsoft
Word: enhancements over the years are showcased, including
elements list, formatting commands, moving to next/previous
spelling errors, spelling error buzzer, and a brief
demonstration of braille input (complete with word echo
(speak typed words, in this case, speak back-translation
results from contracted braille to text).
- Microsoft
Excel: cell comments, column/row headers, and a word on
using browse mode to read protected sheets.
- Microsoft
Outlook: introduction to calendar and other facilities
besides sending and receiving email, address auto-completion
when composing new messages.
- Microsoft
PowerPoint: creating and delivering presentations, speaker
notes.
- Universal
apps: mostly first party apps are showcased (requires
Windows 10 App Essentials add-on for some features).
- Microsoft
Store: completely revamped interface, keyboard navigation
and object navigation.
- Calculator:
the modern version is showcased, including calculator modes,
unit and currency conversions and others.
- Alarms and
Clock: running a stopwatch and countdown timer and how to
deal with toast notifications.
- Mail
(universal app): basics of this app, including message
composition and a note about navigation issues.
- Skype
(universal app): reviewing messages, basic shortcut keys,
and how to answer incoming calls.
- GoldWave:
the new Windows Store version is used, along with looking at
track information (GoldWave add-on required for additional
commands).
- StationPlaylist
Studio: playlist viewer basics (for enhanced experience,
install StationPlaylist Studio add-on).
- Microsoft
Visual Studio: code editor and Intelli-Sense.
- Notepad++:
basics and a live example of indentation tones.
- Kindle for
PC: reading a sample book and basic features.
- 7-Zip and
poedit: overview and 7-Zip File Manager, along with a brief
visit to Poedit.
- Command-line
tools: Command Prompt, PowerShell, Windows Subsystem for
Linux/Bash along with a review of review cursor basics.
You may notice different audio qualities
for some segments, but overall, it is much better than the
2015 edition. Comments are appreciated.
Enjoy.
Cheers,

Hello: I have a book in .pdf format. However, it was scanned as images. Are there any free options that would allow me to OCR the whole file? It is almost 100 megs in size. It is pretty important that I be able to read this file, and possibly others from same source. Of course, I told the person who provided the file to me. Meanwhile, are there options for dealing with this now?
If someone has adobe acrobat pro, could I possibly send the file to you and you OCR it and send it back? I'm thinking through all options. If anyone can help, it is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Malware remover working with NVDA
Hi Tony, Happy new year to you too. Thank you for your help and kindness. I downloaded Malwarebytes and installed it. I will try the Obj Pad add on. Does it have a tutorial? Since you offered to help, I'll ask. I have been struggling with IE11, it always chokes and freezes after I launch it. After restarting it, it is so sluggish to the point it is useless. The only reason I would like to keep using IE11, is the ability to use RSS feeds to track specific info on companies or topics. I have not find a way to use RSS on Chromes, Edge, or Firefox. I did reset IE11 with no success. Any feedback or suggestion is greatly appreciated. Blessings Pascal

Hi,
Check out either super antispyware or malware bytes. They have both got free and professional editions and can both be used with NVDA. You can grab the free editions from www.ninite.com. The super antispyware programs however require you to work using object navigation. If you have the OBJ pad add on, it makes navigating it a piece of cake.

There is a difference between the alt attribute not being present and alt="" (null alt text) on a graphic. When the alt attribute is not present, screen readers often default to speaking the filename of an image. However, when alt="" is present, the image is ignored by screen readers. This is by design. Alt="" is supposed to be used for images that convey no content, but are decorative in nature. However, you bring up a good point. It is impossible for screen reader users to navigate to these graphics. Hence, if a screen reader user wanted to copy an image with alt="" there would be no way to accomplish this. Perhaps NVDA could provide an option to not ignore images with null alt text. Of course, NVDA could only speak the filename of the graphic. If this option existed, I would want to know if the image encountered would be one with null alt text. I would assume the state of this option would be disabled and that a user could enable it when desired.
Regarding collapsed vs expanded. Visually, when a section can be expanded (hence, it is collapsed) a plus sign is displayed. Visually, a user could click on the plus sign to expand the section or menu. Also, when a section is expanded, a minus sign is displayed allowing a user to click on the minus sign to collapse the tree. This is why your braille display displays the way it does. The plus and minus characters do not indicate the state of the tree or menu, but the action that can be taken.

yes, I can accept your explanation of the plus sign.
about graphic, you said "you reproduce the underlying name of the graphic its a very long and meaningless text string in any case" I think it is a link to the graphic will be like this, but if it is a simple graphic have not link and set onclick event on it, we will lost it when use nvda screen reader.

I think it depends on how you think of it. IE there are always two ways. if it says plus it could mean you have expanded it or it could mean it can be expanded.

Hi all:
I have two suggestions about nvda browse on website.
First, nvda will be lost graphic when the graphic has no any "alt text", example: alt = "" or no alt attribute. this design let us no method click it (if is can onclick) or make something for this graphic (if download the graphic) because this graphic is gone in nvda's world, so I hope nvda still show this graphic by "gra" or some signed, tell us graphic has exists. I think if later nvda can do the mark on the graph, then the graph should be displayed anyway.
Second, the wai-aria attribute "aria-expanded" show condition is put upside down. if aria-expanded = false, nvda will announce "collapsed" is right but braille display show "+" (plus), if aria-expanded = true, nvda will announce "expanded" is right but braille display show "-" (minus). Is not the plus and minus the opposite display? or I would like to know why the plus sign is collapsed and minus is expanded yet? Because this thinking seems to be somewhat different from our Asians.

At any rate even if skype does die, they will have to change the minimal version on server to have it not even work and they only just did that last year and that was for 7.2 and older, up to this point you could probably still work with 6 or 5 or 4 or even 3 maybe not 2 but even so, who knows.

Re: New Skype Installation a Complete Disaster!
Well skype classic is your friend.
And yeah I do feel like doing that, I actually asked ms if it would remain so.
I can't make heads or tails of the universal app or the new skype.
My skype doesn't update anymore but to be honest, if this continues, I may have a windows 10 or whatever system for games, and maybe xp or something for offline stuff.
If blindy spaciffic computers got cheaper I am tempted to just forget about standard computers alltogether.
I was hoping skype would get better.

Hi,
Check out either super antispyware or malware bytes.

Yeah I like that, sadly it does not protect from every checkbox and its not updated.
If the checkbox is straight then its fine but if its one of those imbedded boxes like the avast one in ccleaner or some of the opencandy or whatever they call themselves, there is no way in hoho land its going to pick that up.
Its really good with website checkboxes but bar adobe and maybe google no one uses that stuff anymore.

I have it, and I am pretty sure it's just the background processing that does not work after the trial version. The on-demand scanning, which is what the programme is actually useful for in my view, still works, and definitions still can be updated.
I keep it around and it has saved me at least once. I installed a programme that included a bunch of other baggage. I didn't realise I was allowing this other stuff to be installed, which all automatically started running on my machine. None of it was exactly malicious as such, but it was definitely unwanted. A quick MB scan revealed the culprits and I was able to clear everything in a relatively short time. Mostly this was a lot of crap in the registry, including a homepage and search redirect. Of course it's my fault for letting this stuff install in the first place, but my screen-reader (JAWS at the time) was not telling me what was on the screen, even with the use of the JAWS cursor, so I just hit the next button a whole bunch of times, and that's all it takes, sometimes. Lesson learned, but it made me glad I keep MalwareBytes around, you know?

Since you use malwarebytes from time to time, why do you not keep it installed on your machine? Is there a problem with doing that?
Also, you say you "run malwarebytes when you need to". How do you know when you need to? Do you just hope that any malware shows itself as strange behaviour on your system, rather than just doing something sinister in the background?

Re: New Skype Installation a Complete Disaster!
Yeah I know this, its a pitty ms discontinued skypekit.
I really think its high time for users to have a choice of some sort of interface controler software and something based on the core of windows, I don't see any reason we can run whatever interface we want since we basically do that with themes in windows.
I mean they do that in linux.
For example I don't see any reason I can't continue using windows xp or 7 for the rest of my life if I want or even win98, true having a different interface over my core means I probably will have less features in the interface and maybe less abilities but I can live with that, maybe you can switch interfaces I mean we have vertual desktops now so why not interfaces.
Or parts there of.
I will still use the same core subsystems, and in the background the same shells and security systems but I can switch how I want.
I like win10 apps interface for apps, I'd prefur the older control panel classic interfaces, the old win7 search box or even xp's start menu, non cluttered windows, no ribbons etc.
Classic skype and other things.
The older stuff was accessible.
I see no reason that this can't be done, it would be a theme extention at most, linux does it.

To whoever asked about NVDA add-on for Skype universal app, this is part of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on (mine, way before JAWS scripts came along). I understand that Skype have moved to new protocols. There may be architectural reasons why Microsoft decided to redesign it, and they decided to update/modernize the user interface along the way.
I found a forum post, apparently from Microsoft, stating that the "classic" version will be deprecated soon. If you're encountering accessibility issues with the Windows 10 version, I would suggest notifying Microsoft, since the older version may at some point soon no longer be updated or supported.

Really? Do we have a full list anywhere? I called the Microsoft disability thingy and asked about documentation for the new skype, and they never got back to me. That suggests it either doesn't exist, or they're super lazy. Nice folks though.
I stopped using it because, like another poster, I couldn't figure out how to answer calls and such, plus it seems like it needed to be open to really do anything with it, and it wouldn't minimize to the system tray or such. It was also slow, e.g. at bringing up conversations, and it didn't seem to read them very well. It tended to read multiple messages when you arrowed around. I freely admit part of this might be my inability to use it, which is why I asked for documentation from Microsoft. But all the documentation I can find seems to be for the old skype. I got tired of messing with it and went back to old skype.

Re: Foobar 2000 (was RE: [nvda] What do we like for a media playerbesides Winamp?)
Hi,
I'm also a VLC media player dude, and have been using it to play DVD's for eons. I think I've been using it since the days of windows XP.There's a tutorial on using it with NVDA on the accessibilitycentral.net website.

It is also a music editor, you can play DVD’s, or just play your music. There are many key commands for VLC.
Press spacebar to play and pause,
Shift+right arrow to fast forward and rewind a little bit, and press alt+arrow keys and CTRL+arrow keys to do the same by larger amounts. You can access a lot from the menus. VLC has been my favorite media player for two years now!

Me too, or if anybody wants to gives tips on VLC for audio playback, I
can try that too. Gom Audio is gone, I loaded albums into it, it started
playing, and then pretty much locked up my machine, or at least the
keyboard. Nothing would work, not its context menu, Windows key-x, I
couldn't switch windows, you name it. So I hit the power button to shut
down, rebooted, and uninstalled it. I'm fine setting things up and
customizing, but my patience is like zero right now. If it can't even do
the basic thing it's supposed to, it's gone.

Re: Where are the pluggins?
Hi,
There are a number of useful add ons available. You are only limited by your imagination. Some that I would recommend because I use them on almost an everyday basis are: OBJ-pad, golden cursor, windows 10 app essentials, clip contents designer, clip
speak, easy table navigator, emoticons, enhanced aria, place markers, read feeds, remote support, resource monitor, and systray list, I'm sure other NVDA users will also weigh in on this with recommendations and suggestions.
Hope this helps.

Good News! A manager has agreed to complete the paperwork to get the ball rolling on installing NVDA on my machine. But, I have to have my ducks in a row. Where do I go for these
plugins Marshall talked about so I can point to price and location? They are “Focus Highlight” and “Speech Viewer”. I looked on the NVDA website and didn’t see them.
If anyone knows of another plugin I should look at, now would be the time. Remember, I’m sighted and trying to make our software and support documents handicap accessible. I need
to have this turned in ASAP (as soon as possible).
Thanks,

I'd like to second Joseph's advice to actually install NVDA and see how it presents your application. But in addition, as a sighted user you will probably want to do two things:
1. Install the "Focus Highlight" plugin -- it makes it *far* easier to visually see what NVDA is describing at any given point in time; and
2. Enable the "Speech Viewer" feature (under Tools in the NVDA menu) -- it shows everything going to the speech synthesizer, but it just appears in a scrolling window -- quite useful!

I agree your view. If newer nvda or nvda-addon had a feature about make a tag by own on graphic, for example, we will add a describe on graphic that is alt = "" or no alt, the graphic should be show let us tag.

Given that I have my Win XP desktop still, again, it's not my primary system, no, but, I do use it on seldom occasions. This all said, I know that the directive was made you must have at least SP1 of Win7 to use NVDA 2017.4. Normally on this system, I use JAWS 15, so I haven't had the chance to fire up NVDA, but, given this fact about 2017.4, I don't want the thing constantly nagging me to update, when it wouldn't be compatible. My guess is, it'll be smart enough to see that it can't update to anything compatible, but, is that the case? Will it nag me every time I load NVDA, or will it know to keep me back on 2017.3, and not offer anything further? If it'll keep checking, then can I somehow in preferences tell it not to? I'd normally highly discourage doing this, but in my unique situation, it might be necessary. Don't worry, I do! have plenty other systems running Windows 10, so it's not like my only Windows machine is way out of date. Chris.
