Re: problems using NVDA with my new laptop

Gene

I don't think I've checked. I'll check and report. My view is that the mode should automatically be changed to object review when you leave the window you are in but, though I've presented that view on the list before, there seems to be little or no interest in the change.

I can recall times when I've used review mode, forgotten to switch, gone on to do something else, and then I later realized that I was getting unexpected results because I hadn't switched back to object review mode. I susp;ect that happens to a lot of people and they don't make the connection.

If I close NVDA and reopen it, I am placed back in object review mode. As another interesting point, when I apply the saved configuration command while in screen review mode, NVDA key r, I remain in screen-review mode.

Gene, you may know, but does the last used review mode "stick" if you exit NVDA and start it again? I honestly have no idea, but would have presumed that will switch it back to what's typical if you've never changed it, period.

it might help clarify things if we knew the answer to the following question:

When you use numpad commands by themselves, do they work correctly?  In other words, does numpad 8 read the current line of the object you are on?  Does numpad 7 move to the previous line and numpad 9 move to the next line?

I also did a bit of experimentation and if a current or near current version of NVDA is being used, it doesn't matter, for what we are discussing, if laptop or desktop mode is being used.  it may for other commands, but the numpad review commands such as shift 7, 8, and 9, work in both modes.  Before continuing with any experimentation, do the following to make completely sure you are working in the correct screen-review mode:

Issue the command numpad insert numpad 1 until you hear no previous review mode.  If you changed review modes at some point, you may well have unexpected results.

That's what it appears, though I'd have to do more thorough testing to
see if that's what is actually happening. If I remember right, and
what I posted will back me up, I pressed tab several times before
trying down arrow. As for why I pressed numpad 2 before I pressed down
arrow, this may be a minor bug with the way NVDA speaks commands.
Because it's what I'm used to with JAWS and System Access, I am
running the Numpad Nav Mode add-on, so using those arrow keys. If
those are being treated as arrow keys, I'm not sure why NVDA is still
speaking them as numpad as well.

I'll have to try that, seems like a decent workaround. I'm used to
navigating these messages by quickly tabbing through them, so that

Hi all,
I'm having a problem with navigation by tab in certain situations. The
below is copied from NVDA's speech viewer as I read an email from
Groupon. For this example, I've turned on speak command keys so I
don't have to remember where I hit what, but I usually leave that off.
Usually, with System Access in both Gmail's web interface and in
Outlook, and with NVDA in Outlook, emails like this work fine, but not
with Gmail on the web and NVDA.

Re: NVDA and outlook questions

Dan Miner

Well, if it is a 2016 based version then you likely will have the problem of it not reading suggestions easily. I always had to fiddle around with it to get anything. I vaguely remember using object navigation to dive into the enclosing frame It I was truly needing to use that feature, I would just switch to JAWS 18 and it would read in a more natural way. I would give recent Narrator a try and see how it fairs with that dropdown.

When I was using Outlook 2016, I had this problem of it not reading but I did a bit of testing again on this version. It seems to be working fine with the type ahead for reading the first suggestion and changing as I progress on typing. Also, a simple down arrow will read the remaining suggestions. I don't recall which version you have but I am wondering if that is a factor here.

I think there is a setting.
You need to go to, in Outlook to File then Options and then under Mail find the setting which says Automatic Name checking and make sure that that is checked.
I have this checked and if Dennis does not then this may explain the different behaviour.

I know of no such setting. This is very likely another instance where you have to help the screen-reader in some way by using read current line as you type. I don't know why Outlook is different, in the address bar in the browsers I use, autocomplete will read as what I type changes.

This is slightly odd as this is precisely hwat NVDA does for me in Outlook.
I have just tried it and if I press K the most recent email I have typed

whose name begins with K. Pressing the down arrow reveals other addresses beginning with K.

I wonder if there is a setting in Outlook about keeping recent addresses you need to turn on?

Having said that it is also true that this feature does not, for me at least, any longer, reveal results from all your contacts. I often have to go into the to button and search in there to reveal all my addresses in contacts.

Betsy,
First, it's not clear what settings your daughter may have exported or transferred to your new laptop. If this has not already been done it might be best to download and install a fresh copy of NVDA from the NV Access Web site. If this has not already been done try doing that and see if your hotkeys work as they should.

Hi all,

I don't use speech viewer all that often, but as my last message

indicated, I find it useful for testing things. That being said, when

I'm done testing, the only way to close speech viewer seems to be to

restart NVDA. Is this a bug or was this done on purpose? I've tried

both alt+F4 and control+W with no luck.

I just tested this on my copy of Outlook 2016, and yes, it behaves
differently than I am used to with System Access, but not so
differently that I would write to the list on my own about it. With
System Access, it does read as I believe the original poster wants,
which is that as soon as you start typing, the screen reader started
reading the first name that appeared. In NVDA, you have to press down
arrow in order to get it to read the suggestions, but it reads all the
suggestions as expected.

I didn't use read to end, I used the down arrows to move past the
point I couldn't get to using tab. The issue is that I shouldn't have
to press anything but tab if this was working properly.

expected.

I'll have to try that, seems like a decent workaround. I'm used to
navigating these messages by quickly tabbing through them, so that
will take some getting used to. Pressing tab multiple times isn't in
itself the problem though that should be addressed as well, the real
problem is that I can't seem to use the tab key consistently when
navigating in these situations.

Hi all,
I'm having a problem with navigation by tab in certain situations. The
below is copied from NVDA's speech viewer as I read an email from

Re: Word 2013 ribbon and NVDA 2020.3

Lukasz Golonka

I might be able to fix this but I don't have access to any Office 2013
machine. Would you be able to provide me a log as follows:

Restart with add-ons disabled.
Set log level to debug
In NVDA's advanced settings in the debug logging group enable MSAA
logging category - ensure that all other categories are disabled to
declutter the log.
- Try tabbing through the ribbon when it is collapsed.

Please send content of the log viewer privately to me.

Hi Lucas.
Effectively, the operation I have described is when the ribbon is reduced.
I can access to the lower ribbon when ribbon is not reduced.
I hadn't paid attention to this.
However, this is not a problem for NVDA 2020.1 and 2019.3.
Best regards.
Paul.

Hi, I am with NVDA 2020.3, windows 10 2004, french Word 2013 and I have a problem with the ribbon. NVDA speaks only "pane" when I select a tab of the ribbon (by space key) to expand lower ribbon. I can no browse the lower ribbon with "Tab". I have this problem also with NVDA 2020.2 but not with NVDA 2020.1 or 2019.3. Tests done with copy of NVDA and add-ons disabled.
It is possible I am the one responsible for this regression as I've introduced some changes to the way in which ribbons are accessed in older versions of Office during NVDA 2020.2 development cycle. Is this happening for you only when ribbon is collapsed?

Re: DVD ripper that works with NVDA?

On Tue, Dec 29, 2020 at 02:16 PM, George McCoy wrote:
No, I mean .iso images of dvd disks that I want to mount and then rip in windows 10.

George,

I saw your longer reply as well.  Do you actually need to rip them?  I would think that once you mount this sort of ISO as a virtual DVD you should be able to play it directly from that virtual DVD directory.  But what I cannot remember is what "the beginning of DVD content" is named file-wise.

One of the huge advantages in newer versions of Windows is that you can mount ISO files as virtual media and have Windows "play with it" as though it were that media itself.  If push comes to shove, I'd try mounting one, then opening the media player of your choosing, and trying to play that drive that's really not a drive but that Windows has set up as though it were upon mounting.

Yours is an unusual situation, but it may be easier to resolve by doing little to nothing.  It will take some playing to see.
