Quentin, the main NV Access RSS feed has been imported to the group, as well as the community add ons RSS feed. So, posting through the blog will eventually make it to the list. I believe Groups checks for integration updates every hour? But anyway, this means less work for you. You just post the blog post or any NV Access update and it gets beamed to this list.

NVDA 2020.1 Released

By NV Access

NV Access is pleased to announce that version 2020.1 of NVDA, the free screen reader for Microsoft Windows, is now available for download. We encourage all users to upgrade to this version.

Highlights of this release include support for several new braille displays from HumanWare and APH, plus many other important bug fixes such as the ability to again read math in Microsoft Word using MathPlayer / MathType.

Please note, after updating any software, it is a good idea to restart the computer. Restart by going to the Shutdown dialog, selecting “restart” and pressing ENTER. Updating software can change files which are in use. This can lead to instability and strange behaviour which is resolved by rebooting. This is the first thing to try if you do notice anything odd after updating.

While downloading NVDA, please consider becoming a monthly donor. Contributions like yours help NV Access continue our important work.

We also have a range of training material in the NV Access Shop to help you increase your skills with NVDA. Start with the popular Basic Training for NVDA in electronic text, audio and braille. Save with the NVDA Productivity Bundle. This includes Basic Training, all our Microsoft Office training, and telephone support.

Re: News – NV Access - NVDA 2020.1 Released #nvaccessnewsfeed

It took a few tries for my update to come through. If anybody else is having issues, I'd actually just restart the computer. :) I should do that more often, honestly. But yeah, this is a good update! I'm excited to see what NV Access can do with Python 3.

Re: google and insecure apps

Since GMail considers almost every program to be less secure and since you aren't likely to be hacked using these widely used programs, why bother to learn another program that is more secure but where it doesn't matter?

If you are hacked, you will know immediately.  you will receive a message from GMail to your back up e-mail address telling you that someone logged into your account with this or that device and I believe giving an approximate location.  If you use a good password, unless your machine is infectedd with malware or GMail itself is hacked, I consider the risk of being hacked to be small or negligible.

If I used e-mail for some sort of important purposes, I would encrypt it if privacy were a concern.  for typical discussions such as list mail and conversations with friends, why bother?

Hi.

To those on outlook and other programs as long as your program supports
o auth 2 it will be fine.

Even though thunderbird with normal passwords works fine with o auth I
get a faster experience with sending and recieving.

I did have less secure apps on, but just turned it off since now I am
able to use o auth in thunderbird I have no desire or need to leave that
active.

Becides google keeps complaining about it every so often so I don't have it.

If you currently use outlook as a home user and either don't use any
advanced features or are only using it for mail, I'd personally switch
to thunderbird and turn on o auth so that you can get mail without this
insecure stuff.

You can also buy office 2019 which should have this security standard.

locked Recent Issue with Excessive Verbosity in Thunderbird When Using NVDA (Announcement Only)

I have been following this bug since I contributed to it on the NVDA GitHub.  As of this afternoon, it is officially closed.

The issue was with Thunderbird, not NVDA, and the final note when the bug was closed is, "Fixed in Thunderbird 68.8"

Why?  (And that's a serious question.)

There had been an issue with PDFs in the stable version of the new Edge, but I believe that has been fixed now.  It's not my favorite, though, as I prefer to open PDFs in a dedicated reader or editor for same.  It seems to be very-well-liked in the screen reader forums I participate on.  What is it that you are looking for that Edge isn't giving you?  That's pretty essential to know if alternatives are to be proposed.

I like to use bookworrm. The only problem I notice is: it tweaks the lines to have the same cize, so it adds artificial line breaks.
It makes us not able to read by paragraphs and you need to remove line breaks when you're copying quotes to make a paper.
If you just want to read continuously, it's really nice!

Re: can't get nvda remote to work

Glenn

You said you are using "nvdaremote" for the host. I don't know if you meant that literally, but if so, be aware that it should be "nvdaremote.com".

You were probably just using shorthand there, but I have seen such seemingly obvious oversights cripple many hours of productivity as well, so thought I would point it out.

Hi,
I could not get NVDA remote to work, so I updated the add-on and it didn't work, so I updated NVDA and it still did not work, so I updated the remote to
work with the latest NVDA, and it still tells me that it cannot connect to the remote server.
I am using nvdaremote for the host, and I have tried generating a key and I have made up a 4-digit key and nothing works.
I used to use this all the time, so it isn't from me not having experience with it.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Google Docs Menu Issue

wow, thanks! I don't think I need proper tutorials.. I have friends who can help, but this is the first time I had to use Docs after many years, and, though I have Screen Reader support enabled, I didn't know I could enable braille.

Funny that I see all the mnus, but not the content of edit fields...

Ciao, great help! Thanks,

Ollie

Hello Ollie,

Mystic Access sells tutorials on the google suite " https://www.mysticaccess.com".

In the google suite, you need to enable screen reader support, and on the google suite access menu, you need to enable Braille support.

Hello all,

Taling about Google Docs, I can see the menus and options ok, but when I edit text or enter new text I have no braile output on my pm 40.

Is that normal, orshould I enable or disable anything?

Thanks in advance,

Ollie

ps: Windows 10 1909 and latest NVDA Alpha.

However, when I turn off Focus mode, the Doc window is the only thing

I actually think Google designed it this way. Browse mode should be
turned off when using Google docs. Use it in focus/forms mode. Give
them accessibility feedback at the below link.

Using chrome I get it.  I prefer the new edge.

When I visit:  https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/state-parole-board-releasing-twice-the-amount-of-prisoners-to-ease-crowding-amid-pandemic

I cannot get NVDA to find that play control, either.  If I hover the mouse over it, NVDA announces, "To get missing image descriptions, open the context menu."  And that is whether it's the initial one, or if I start playing, pause the video, and the subsequent play arrow shows in the center.  I also have never seen an embedded video player that uses this style elsewhere.

I have no idea how to get at the context menu to which NVDA is making reference, as if I do SHIFT+F10 I get the standard browser context menu which has nothing to do with unlabeled images or getting image descriptions.  I am using Brave when doing this testing.
