StationPlaylist add-on 20.08 released, a note or two regarding Windows 10 App Essentials 20.08
#addonrelease
Hi all,
Two important things:
StationPlaylist add-on 20.08 is now available. This version mainly includes optimizations and localization updates.
Note: if you are using Studio 5.20, you will get a notification after installing add-on 20.08, telling you that the next long-term support (LTS) version will be the last release series to support Studio 5.20. That release series is 20.09.x and it will show up in September.
Moving onto Windows 10 App Essentials, a few announcements:
In addition to delaying version 20.08 release (until next week) due to a showstopper bug in upcoming Windows 10 Version 20H2 (beta at the moment), the upcoming release will include significant changes to modern keyboard support (emoji panel, clipboard history, dictation, hardware keyboard suggestions, and many others). For many of you, you won’t notice changes, but programmers may notice significant changes regarding how events from modern keyboard interface are tracked. Also, a more efficient way to detect appearance/disappearance of modern keyboard interface (emoji panel, for example) was found, which results in making the code behind this feature more stable and simple. These changes are indeed destined for a future NVDA release.
Also, another important thing to remember: Windows 10 App Essentials 20.08 will require NVDA 2020.1 or later (due to add-on support policy), and if the showstopper bug from 20H2 is fixed, it will be the first version to support the upcoming Windows 10 feature update.
Enjoy the new add-on releases. Cheers, Joseph

NVDA and MathML content, plus Hi from Jay at AC
Jason Timms
Hi My name is Jay Timms, Wanted to say hi before blasting some questions to the group. Go gentle I am new here. I am looking for advice on MathML and NVDA. I am working with a student who needs to access Math. I have material encoded in MathML, have connected to try to load MathPlayer on his computer. He has the latest version of NVDA and Windows 10. I have reinstalled his Office to ensure it is 32 bit. His material is in MS Word and has been encoded by a Professional service provider known for their ability to encode in MathML. We can’t seem to get NVDA to speak the content in the book? Any thoughts? Also, I have not worked with someone using MathML before, are there other software solutions or format choices that may work better. The student is new to NVDA and MathML so switching file format is not likely an issue as we are starting from the beginning anyway? Thanks,, Jay @ AC

I recall using Windows XP for several years after Windows 7 was introduced because of just the sort of nonsense you're referring to. But no sane IT department is going to keep an out of support version of Windows 10 or want to pay for "beyond extended" support for one that has, at least if they've got leadership with any sense. It's always worth asking about when the next update is planned, as none of this happens without planning, and even when the update comes, it's usually to a Windows 10 version that is at least one, often two, versions behind the latest one. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 . . . the presumption of innocence, while essential in the legal realm, does not mean the elimination of common sense outside it. Windows 1809 got an extended support for companies due to Covid19 until May 11, 2021. The company I’m working for is one of the biggest in the IT industry and we are internally still running Win10 1803 and from my experience as bigger a company is as less chances we got to influence the IT department in their decission to go to more recent versions.

I'm not sure what you want to do. Do you use read to end when reading mail or just down arrow through the entire message? You can use the read to end command to both stop unwanted repetition and begin reading the message body.

Re: NVDA in windows terminal on older Win 10 versions
Schoepp,
Have you checked with your organization as to when they will be applying whatever Feature Update they intend to apply next? Version 1809 is now very old, and is going out of support later this year or May of next for extended support for Enterprise and Educational editions, and I cannot imagine the IT department won't be updating to something significantly more recent. In the age of Windows As A Service, it's imperative for developers to keep up with whatever the latest supported versions of Windows 10 are, and when a version is about to go out of support there is no good reason to dedicate resources at that late date. I'd be making queries about the next update to Windows 10 on these centrally administered machines, as any changes to NVDA to support version 1809 at this late date would be highly unlikely. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 . . . the presumption of innocence, while essential in the legal realm, does not mean the elimination of common sense outside it. Re: Nvda and multiple reading of subjects in E-mails
Jarek (and anyone else),
What e-mail client are you using? Are you opening your messages in their own windows for reading? I know the behavior you're talking about, but I don't think it's the actual subject being read multiple times, but because the subject is also the window title in a message window, that's getting read, followed by the actual subject. In Outlook 2016, if I open a message sent to me in plain text, and I'll use "Keep Forgetting" as the subject, the window title is "Keep Forgetting - Message (Plain Text)", and the actual Subject entry is just Keep Forgetting. NVDA starts by reading the window title (much like it would say File Explorer when you are in File Explorer or Mozilla Thunderbird if you were using that client and were in the main window) then immediately repeats itself with only the subject because that's the next item in the reading sequence for a message. Getting the subject read twice is an artifact of how the window for reading same is set up. If you're getting more than two times, then I'd have to look at the exact client and how the message is being read to determine if what's in the subject is somehow being presented somewhere that NVDA reads a third time. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 . . . the presumption of innocence, while essential in the legal realm, does not mean the elimination of common sense outside it. NVDA in windows terminal on older Win 10 versions
Christian Schoepplein
Hi,
I have to use Windows 10 version 1809 on my laptop for my job. With this version I have problems to use the windows terminal. I can't e.g. not read file listings. On my private laptop with Windows 10 version 2004 installed I do not have those problems. On both systems the current stable version of NVDA is installed, NVDA 2020.2. Is it possible to improve the support of windows text console on my old system on my working laptop somehow? I don't know when a newer version of Windows 10 will be rolled out, so a workaround for Windows 1809 would be great. Cheers and thanks for any hint, Schoepp
