Subject: [nvda] New Member Seeking Tutorials

Hello;

I am a new user and just subscribed to this list.  I wonder if one can obtain a daily digest of messages to this list?  Also I’m looking for a good comprehensive tutorisl.  I’ve seen lots of youtube posts that briefly cover one or two features of the program but nothing that I felt was very comprehensive.  I wonder if anyone has any suggestions?

Hi
I may be totally off target here because it's a long time since I used
Jaws but is this referring to the Verbosity level in Jaws? When I
used it, there used to be 3 levels of verbosity you could set based on
your proficiency, the higher the level, the less information about the
environment inwhich you are focused is fed back to the user. You
could possibly create something like this using profiles and Document
formatting settings in NVDA.

To be honest though, I've personally never really seen a need for sleep
mode. In JAWS, which takes control of the whole keyboard (or at least
used to), it would seem logical to put it to sleep for playing games
that use an input system like DirectX or whatever that is sure to
interfere. But NVDA doesn't have such a limitation - I don't think
there's a single game where I've had to put NVDA to sleep and the two
have cooperated very nicely indeed. The one thing I do is to turn
keyboard echo off so I don't get distracted by NVDA chattering at me
every time I press a key, but yet I've got it for other things in case
of crashes, errors or other dialogs that might show up. Add that to the
beauty of configuration profiles, and you're laughing.

Re: New Member Seeking Tutorials

Hi Richard,

As well as all the information previously mentioned, we have some official training material for NVDA you might be interested in.  The main one to start with is the Basic Training for NVDA.  Despite the name, it covers everything from starting NVDA through to advanced concepts like Object Navigation, the Review Cursor and Configuration Profiles.  It is available in a range of formats, starting at just $30 Australian (not much over $20 USD depending on the exchange rate of the day): https://www.nvaccess.org/shop

Kind regards

Quentin.

Depending on how much you know about working with Windows and Windows programs and browsing, you may only need specific information such as how to use object navigation, and screen review.  The quick navigation keys for browsing will be very similar between JAWS and NVDA and my impression is that Window-eyes used roughly the same commands toward the end of its versions.

I can't suggest specific tutorials but that may help you know what to look for.

If you need more instruction, others can suggest a lot of material.

Re: Question for NVDA Compiler Team?

Well as you say, it's been around since 2006 and we don't see it disappearing any time soon.  We have a fantastic team, a great community and NVDA is the most popular screen reader (according to the WebAIM survey:  https://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey8/) so, I'm quite optimistic about the future!

Re: the edward voice

Quentin Christensen

Speech player is somewhat dusty on the back shelf, but eSpeak NG certainly still exists in NVDA.  If you install NVDA from scratch on a Windows 10 computer, it will use OneCore by default.  Press NVDA+control+v to open the voice settings.  Tab to the "change' (synthesizer) button and press ENTER.  Then, press HOME or the arrow keys to find eSpeak-NG and ENTER.  Next, TAB to the variant and select Ed from the list.  Is that the one your were after?

I'm not sure whether NV Speech player will be updated.  If there is anyone who is eager to update it and has the ability and interest to maintain it, let me know. (I'm not sure exactly what Mick wants to do with it yet, but if someone is interested, we can start the dialog).

Is not Windows that install...

It is NVDA that installs...

The Windows association tells Windows that is NVDA that handles NVDA-ADDON files...

NVDA will install the add-on in the running copy...

Well, I guess I didn't know better, but I install add-ons to a portable version in the same way as with an installed version. I just press ENTER on the .nvda-addon and it installs to the running version. Updating add-ons works the same way for me.

I'm quite sure that you must use Manage Add-ons in the tools submenu of NVDA when installing to a portable version.

Yes, of course...

If you have an installed version of NVDA, even running a portable
version of NVDA, pressing enter in a *.nvda-addon file, the add-on will
be installed in the portable version.

If you do not have any NVDA version installed, to install a add-on, go
to add-on manager, go to install button and choose the add-on you want
to install...

Subject: [nvda-addons] Add-on Updater will require NVDA 2019.3 starting March 10, 2020, a speicla change fro alpha snapshot users

Hi all,

A few weeks ago I announced to the NVDA community that Add-on Updater will be the last add-on from me to require NVDA 2019.3. This decision was made in consideration for people who may need to use 2019.2.1 and earlier a little longer.

But the countdown has begun: after March 10, 2020 (the day Add-on Updater 20.03 is scheduled to be released, which happens to be 30 days after 2019.3 is released), Add-on Updater will require NVDA 2019.3. No exceptions, no extensions.

Also, a special change will be implemented in consideration for people using alpha snapshots: starting from Add-on Updater 20.03, those using alpha snapshots (master branch) will no longer receive incompatibility prompts if trying to update add-ons in most cases. The only time you’ll get an incompatibility notice when updating add-ons through Add-on Updater will be when NV Access updates minimum API version for all add-ons (currently set at 2019.3) and the add-on in question does not cover the updated API version in the compatibility range (minimumNVDAVersion <= newAPIVersion <= lastTestedNVDAVersion). This change is destined for alpha snapshot users only – those using betas, RC’s, and stable releases will continue to receive incompatibility notices if an add-on update isn’t compatible with latest NVDA version as seen internally (versionInfo.version_*).

Cheers,

Joseph

I can't get it to download.  I wonder if she has reached her limit for Drop Box.

For Ame,

Had you restarted the computer when you were having this problem?  After restarting the computer did it still recur?  If it's working for Roger, the only other thing I can think of is are you using any add-ons and does restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled help?

Hi all!

Just ran across something a few days ago when I installed the latest nvda update.  I’m a winamp user.  When you hit s for shuffle or r for repeat, you should hear “on” or “off.”  It doesn’t say anything but “off.”  Weird!  I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling winamp.  I always get the light version.  I’m guessing there haven’t been any updates since 5.63.  Radionomy hasn’t done anything with it as far as I know.  Maybe I’m wrong and that’s the issue.  Anyway, like I said, it’s a pretty minor thing in the grand scheme of things but I just wanted someone to know.

Thanks

Ame

Re: Editing of Windows onecore voices

Quentin Christensen

Hi Marco,

You'll need to put your feedback in to Microsoft - the OneCore voices are built into Windows, NVDA just accesses them, it doesn't control how OneCore voices adjust pronunciation etc.  You could talk to the Disabilitry Answer Desk at: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/disability-answer-desk

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hello.

MS Speech mobile isn't compatible for this version. I have one pleasure
to developers of NVDA.

Please, could You edit Windows Onecore to same things, as MS Speech
mobile, for example to correct pronunciation of letters and also, names
of voices viewing, as name of voice and language. Also, there is problem
with sorting of voices, because voices are sorted randomly.

Please, could You look on It?

Thank You.

best regards

Hi,

This trick was employed so an add-on author does not have to worry about setting this flag every time NVDA’s version changes.

I looked at the manifest for the voices I have installed, and it says that the last tested NVDA version is 2099.4, which does not exist. So, I'd assume these haven't been tested to work with the latest version as of yet.
