While I agree with all of Gene's comments in this thread, I do suggest that you:

Try NVDA -> Tools -> Run COM Registration Fixing Tool.

Hi,

Depends on which add-ons and versions you’ve got:

  • If you have development snapshots for Windows 10 App Essentials or StationPlaylist, you should switch to stable channel as soon as possible, as newer builds will not even install in 2019.2.1.
  • For other add-ons, you’re okay for now.

Hi Joseph,

I use the screen curtain addon and defined ALT+Shift+s to trigger it. Will that shorcut still function when screen curtain is incorporated into NVDA 2019.3 or will I need to redefine it?

Thanks :)

Re: Broken file list in open/save dialogs?

You should never assume in a case like this that the screen-reader is the problem.  If it works in every other program where it is expected to, then I would consider it far more likely that the Windows update did something to damage or interfere with the program you are working with.

Hi Sarah,
The version I have I believe was released in 2015.
What confuses me is:
1. The problem only happened after an update, so QWS itself isn't bugged.
2. Since the update, I have only seen that problem in the one program,
which makes me think that it's not an incompatibility issue in
communication between Windows and/or NVDA.
3. The problem in question manifests itself in a standard Windows dialog
that has existed since XP, if not earlier, and whose accessibility has
been a stable anchor for the past 20 years.
I have experienced similar issues previously in earlier versions of
Skype 8, and sometimes in GoldWave if an intensive task is in progress,
but those scenarios somehow seemed to fix themselves over time.
Maybe this one will as well, who knows. But, if NVDA is struggling in a
simpkle dialog box, then something is seriously wrong somewhere. Maybe
one of those really annoying hard to reproduce bugs...Some visual aspect
of window positioning, perhaps?
Cheers,
Damien.

Re: Broken file list in open/save dialogs?

Gene

But the question is, why was the files list accessible before and can it be made so now and this question is relevant in general.

First, is it really inaccessible?  What is files of type set on.  Let's say it's mid.  If, somehow, you are unexpectedly in a folder with no subfolders and no mid files, you will see nothing.  Change files of type to all if there is such a setting and see what you find.  If you can't, then backspace in the name list and see if you move to a folder with subfolders where you can down arrow and see folders displayed.

I may have another suggestion or two, but I'll wait to see what happens.

I have at the back of my mind that therewas either a command or an

What is the command, or where can I get the add/on_

Thanks, sorry about this basic question, but I never needed this before.

Re: Changing synth on the fly

Hi Ollie,

I am a bit confused because when I read this thread, I see references to an iPhone.  Since this is the list for NVDA, I would think you were referring to NVDA.

Using NVDA, the hotkey to bring up the list of installed synthesizers is Insert + control + S.  Then use up/down arrow keys to choose a different synthesizer.  Make sure you have installed the desired synthesizer first. Otherwise it will not show up in the list of synthesizers after pressing the hotkey.

On the other hand, if you want to change the voice used by a synthesizer, the hotkey is insert + control + V.  This brings up a box with  the default synthesizer.  Then tab once to choose a different voice.

Now, for the most part I use English as my operating language on pc, but

I do have quite a lot of mail in Italian.

Since i like the English voice / George / of OneCore, but I can-t stand

the Italian voices,

I-d ilke to use another tts for Italian.

I have at the back of my mind that therewas either a command or an

add/on to change tts on teh fly.

Is that true, or have I just made it up_

What is the command, or where can I get the add/on_

Thanks, sorry about this basic question, but I never needed this before.

Ciao,

Ollie

Well, that program is probably quite old, and for me has not gotten an update since about 2004 or so. You can contact the author but if he is no longer updating I would switch to a different midi editor.

Hi,
For some reason, I'm struggling to access the files and folders list
of a standard open/save dialog. Even more strangely, it's only in
one program. This has only started happening today, since I updated
Windows 10 from 1809 to 1909.
When I try to access the list, all I get from NVDA is: "Items view
list". Any attempt to move up and down the list results in silence,
and any attempt to move back to parent directories results in a
repeat of "items view list".
Has anyone got any ideas as to why this might be happening, or how
to fix it?
Cheers.
Damien.

When you want to "take time off" from any Groups.io Group

I have noticed recently that we've had several members who were long time members unsubscribe and then resubscribe several months later, and by all indications this was to "take a break" or "take time off" from the group.   It's not that one cannot do this, but if you do then your membership ceases and when you resubscribe your first message will be held for moderation, as is typical as a spam control measure.

It is, however, possible to simply suspend e-mail messages from this, or any given Groups.io group, but without removing your membership and creating a hold on your first message when you resubscribe.

The easiest way to temporarily turn off messages from a group is to send a message to, GROUPNAME+nomail@groups.io.  In the case of this group, that would be nvda+nomail@groups.io or nvda+nomail@nvda.groups.io; either should work.

When you want to resume your participation, if you've been getting single messages prior to your hiatus, then send a message to, GROUPNAME+single@groups.io.  In the case of this group that would be either nvda+single@groups.io or nvda+single@nvda.groups.io; either should work.

If you were reading via digest or just getting special notices, use one of the following:

GROUPNAME+digest@groups.io

To receive plain digests instead of individual messages

GROUPNAME+fulldigest@groups.io

To receive full featured digests instead of individual messages

GROUPNAME+summary@groups.io

To receive a daily summary instead of individual messages

GROUPNAME+special@groups.io

To only receive special messages

where you'd substitute nvda for GROUPNAME in the addresses above.  The same basic pattern applies with regard to other groups.  You can also use any of the above addresses to switch your subscription type as well, if you're already receiving single messages and want one of the digests, then send a message to the appropriate address for the digest type you want and you'll be switched to it.  Vice versa if you want to go the other direction.

Re: Reading Margin Comments in Word with NVDA

I'd update, if I were you, because later versions do this far better. Anyway, you could To report any comments at the current caret position, press NVDA+alt+c. All comments for the document, along with other tracked changes, can also be listed in the NVDA Elements List when selecting Annotations as the type.

This Microsoft article also gives alternatives, but I've found their screen reader help articles to be more for JAWS folks but still, give it a read.

Reading Margin Comments in Word with NVDA

David Russell <david.sonofhashem@...>

Hi NVDA Group,

I'm returning after a few months hiatus, and have a question per usual.

A friend sent me a response to a word document I produced with
comments said to be in the margin. I tried the key combo
NVDA key or insert, alt c,
and it did not work in regular mode or browse mode, nvda key space.
I could not find the preferences menu choices, so to turn comments on,
if it is off.

I am using NVDA 2018.4 and generally love it!
Any further tips to resolve are appreciated.

Best,
David Russell
