Re: More on the nvdaHelperRemote (outprocMgrThreadFunc) error in new snapshots

Hi Joseph

Thank goodness, the problem just got fixed and snapshots, master and next, work fine now. The latest Windows update, build 16299.248, must have fixed things. Immediately after this update I tried to update NVDA again and it worked perfectly. I was going to write about this to the list today.

Thank you for the interest you have shown.

Kind regards

Christo

Hello Joseph

Thank you for responding and showing your readiness to assist.

Sorry, yes, my mistake, at that time I had a next snapshot installed.
However, I have just installed the master snapshot as of today and am experiencing exactly the same problem. Here is my NVDA start up log in Debug format:

Hi,
The log and your post doesn't match up. You say you're using master snapshots, but the log says you're actually using a next branch snapshot. Also, for situations like this, an info log won't help - you might want to set log level to debug and see if it can give you more info. Also, please do try using master snapshot (not next) and see if it fixes this.
Cheers,

Subject: [nvda] More on the nvdaHelperRemote (outprocMgrThreadFunc) error in new snapshots

Hello especially to the developers

Some days ago I reported that I have been getting an error with every master snapshot after 4 February. The header of the error message is:

nvdaHelperRemote (outprocMgrThreadFunc)

And the error text is:

Error registering focus winEvent hook

This only happens on my 64 bit machine. I have included the start-up log
for NVDA below. All add-ons were disabled to eliminate any of them as
the cause and UAC is set to 0. Here is the log which I hope will make
sense to some and clarify this very worrying problem:

Re: did you test libreoffice 5.3 and later to read dialogs using screen review?

can someone please confirm the bug which i reported about the problem
of libreoffice?
of course commenting in that website needs subscription.

hi.
is there any settings that change behaviour of displaying dialogs in
libreoffice to the 5.2 and previous?
do you know which change causes this problem?
i think that i should go to 4.3 again, because this version its the
most simplest version and the first one which works without need to
install java and java access briedge!
i reported the bug in bug report website for libreoffice, but anyone
did not help me to confirm it!
i think he was one of developers that told: we press insert 7 numpad
and want to navigate, but nvda just says the title of dialog, not its
content!

Hi,

Yes that problem is also on libreoffice 6.0.
though i have that problem with some of the programs i am using.
not just libreoffice.
also some native windows programs have that problem.
it also took me a while to get used to object navigation.
but if you get the hang out of it it works pretty well.
just continue to try and figure out how it works.
i found a nice tutorial somewhere where i was quickly able to learn it
bout i guess i have lost the link.

i guess it was one of joseph's tutorials though.

Simon

hello every one.
i asked this questions in different posts, but did not recieve reply.
libreoffice since version 5.3, shows dialogs like one combine word

Re: Bug in espeak ng used in NVDA Next

hi.
firefox 52esr is the last version that supports windows xp.
i did not know if developers made programs with something that does
not support xp, the program won't run on xp!
does visual studio 2015 supports xp?
because some versions of nvda which are built with this program, run
on xp and the last supported version on xp is 2017.3.
i dont trust any antivirus and security programs and never use them to
become worried in this regard that they dont support xp anymore!

On 2/24/18, Simon Eigeldinger <simon.eigeldinger@vol.at> wrote:
Hi all,

I wholeheartedly want to say sorry.
If its the issue you are describing.

On the other hand if its possible there needs a way to go forward though.
Because Win XP is nowadays pretty difficult to be used because of many
software aren't supported anymore.
also antivirus, mail and browsers aren't running anymore on xp.
i don't know if Firefox ESR still runs on XP though it is still on the
52 branch so it might.

I also don't know if linux would be an alternative.

unfortunately espeak ng just starts with win 8.1
i also would be happy if it would work on win xp or 7.
though 7 might work.
i also don't know why they are using the win 8.1 sdk to build it.

i don't know if the voice data of espeak ng can be moved to espeak
though that might break the whole thing or no audio would come out of it.

Simon

Hi Simon,

What version of eSpeak-NG are you using?  Looking at:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/releases indicates that the
latest
version is 1.49.2, which we updated to prior to NVDA 2017.4.

Having said that, I know there are still issues with eSpeak, some
of
which
are tracked on our issue tracker, and some on eSpeak-NG's here:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/issues

Kind regards

Re: did you test libreoffice 5.3 and later to read dialogs using screen review?

hi.
is there any settings that change behaviour of displaying dialogs in
libreoffice to the 5.2 and previous?
do you know which change causes this problem?
i think that i should go to 4.3 again, because this version its the
most simplest version and the first one which works without need to
install java and java access briedge!
i reported the bug in bug report website for libreoffice, but anyone
did not help me to confirm it!
i think he was one of developers that told: we press insert 7 numpad
and want to navigate, but nvda just says the title of dialog, not its
content!

You're welcome,
It does indeed record's what you here, and like stereo mix
you can set it to do that or to combine and records everything going
with the sound card,
in its setting it has the following options to choose from:

Recording from
for Windows XP for Vista, Win7, Win8, etc.
Record input voice (from Microphone)
Record output voice (from Computer), this one is what you here.

Record both in and out Voice, this one is every audio channel going
with the sound card, like sterio mix
Save in different channel, this one is to put the mic input in a
channel, and the speaker output in another one, as in left or right.
Hope it helps

Hello Gene,

Yes in effect, let’s take Audacity as it is a free program, to set it to
record everything regardless of soundcard settings, press Alt and right
arrow to edit, up arrow to preferences and press enter, go to the top of
the
list which is “devices and tab, arrow down to Windows WA sappie and then
tab
on to OK and press enter.
This will give the equivilent of “what you hear”.
I can give more detailed information if necessary, such as saving in MP3
format for which you need the lame mp3 encoder to be installed, also
free.
I would still like to know where the actual file is located as I am
curious
by nature.

Are you describing recording what you hear as the file plays or
something
else such as you can do in replay audio? A lot of recording programs
can't
do what replay audio and Total Recorder can do. If the person wants to
record what his sound card is playing, I can recommend a very simple
program
with which he can very likely do this. To be sure what settings he
should
use, I'd need to know what version of Windows he has and whether it has
a
what you hear or a stereo mix option. Even if it doesn't. he probably
can
do this but we would have to know what version of Windows is being used.

If all else fails and as a last resort, find your file in the browser
and
focus on it,open an audio editor such as Sound forge, Goldwave or
audacity
and start it recording, alt and tab back to your file and press enter,
let
it finish and then go back to the audio editor and stop it, you can then
save this file in whatever format you want.
You must make sure that the audio editor is set to accept input from the
internet.
Perhaps a bit long winded, but it will always work and I have done it on
many occasions.

I discussed the file type briefly but my main point is that using the
context menu will allow you to save files on some sites and not on
others.
this is not related to the file type, it's how the site is constructed.

We don't know, but my guess is that, in this case, Internet Explorer is
being used and the file opens in Windows Media player, hence the
question
of
how to save from there.

In the context of other browsers, not the archaic Internet Explorer, the
file is played in the browser when you press enter on the link. If you
are
on a site where save target as or equivalent doesn't work, you need to
know
that you can use the command control s while the file is playing, and
save
it while in the browser in that way.

Of course, that presupposes that you are dealing with an actual file
that
is
playing from the site as a file, and not a stream. The stream plays a
little of a file and then refreshes the buffer in the browser or player
but
the entire file is never available. Just a little bit ahead of where
you
are listening. It can't be saved because it is a stream, not a file
playing
as a file from the web site. Since this is called a podcast in the
question, the odds are that it is an actual file being played from the
web
site, not a stream as I am using the word.

That is one way you can save many files. But it is important to know
other

Hello,

Pressing enter on the link will probably open it, if it’s to be
downloaded,
try the context menu, [key to the left of the right control key on a
standard keyboard], you get options including maybe “save as” or “save
target as”, this should bring up the normal save as dialogue and the
file
can be saved to a folder, from there it cvan be opened in a program such
as
Windows media player.

We don’t know what kindof file it is so can’t be specific, I hope this
helps
and good luck.

Hi,
The log and your post doesn't match up. You say you're using master snapshots, but the log says you're actually using a next branch snapshot. Also, for situations like this, an info log won't help - you might want to set log level to debug and see if it can give you more info. Also, please do try using master snapshot (not next) and see if it fixes this.

Hi, Sam,

I set outlook to plain text but that didn't fix the problem. It is probably something with NVDA.

It now occurs to me that this began to happen for me when I was running betas a couple of weeks ago, and this behaviour has crept into the NVDA RC1 build. It is an NVDA bug that is worth reporting. Perhaps the Outlook message is somehow being modified. This doesn't happen when an alternate screenreader is tested. Note that you need to navigate past the first line of the message. Happy to report this if nobody has done so.

Hi, everyone,

Yesterday and today I noticed something different in outlook. When I hit
escape to get out of a message, I get a message saying that the body of the
message has changed and do I want to save it. I've never seen this before.
Is there something I might need to change in either outlook or NVDA?

Thanks for your help in advance.

When you install it, does it automatically switch your default playback device.  I ask because I installed a software package once and it changed my computers output sound so my computer went silent and I needed to get sighted assisstence to fix it.

Re: FW: [win10] Version 1709 and beyond: screen readers must support uIA notification event in order to announce various things from apps #advisory

Gene

I haven't used Dolphin and Cobra.  But JAWS and Window-eyes, though they had different interfaces, used the same general approach to accessibility.  You moved the virtual mouse with different commands, but you moved it to accomplish the same things.  Many commands were different.  Read title bar in Window-eyes is control shift t.  In JAWS and NVDA, it is JAWS key or NVEDA key t.  the concept is the same and what is being read is the same and the reason for the command is the same.  A lot of what you do with a screen-reader actually is working with Windows and program commands.  People make far too much of the ddifferences between the major Windows screen-readers I'm familiar with because they don't understand the important and basic concept that a lot of what you do is with Windows and program commands.

Dear all, dear Joseph,

I was an user of Jaws, Window Eyes, Dolphin and Cobra. I had conversations with developers of any of these screen readers and I always got the impression that everyone wants to push his own concept of screen reading. Developers are trying to compete through different concepts. The biggest disadvantage of this approach is that users of these screen readers have a totally different perception of accessibility. Currently I am providing support for Cobra screen reader users who are changing to NVDA. And I am so glad to be in this community! I mean, NVDA tries to put all accessibility concepts into one standard which is very important. This is why NVDA users would cope with almost every screen reader but it is not so easy for users of other screen readers to change to NVDA. The reason is that user of other screen readers would have to learn more concepts of getting information digitally.

In my view, it was a very big step backwards to make a commercial product out of screen readers which should actually provide a high standard for accessibility. Instead of a common standard approach, we have thousants of users who understand accessibility in very different ways. This makes it difficult for Microsoft and other API providers to consider all these requirements.

I can understand that Microsoft cannot answer questions properly because they get lots of different perspectives. And this is the second reason why our community must grow and show that we have a common understanding regarding accessibility. NV Access has to play its important consultant role in conversations with software developers, and ideally other screen reader developers should cooperate with each other to achieve a good standard.

But unfortunately we still have a big debate between screen reader users and developers. Many users think that screen reader development can only take place if we have many screen readers. But in fact this would be the wrong way because this would be a break to improvements.

On the other hand developers of commercial screen readers are focusing on their product and do not have open eyes for other concepts of other screen readers. So, they try to keep their conceptual background away from going public, which could happen if they disclose important technical information to Microsoft etc.

I thank you Joseph for your crucial work and for your engagement in this community. We rely on developers like you when it comes to accessibility.

Best

Adriani

Hi,

No, Jenny is still around and leading accessibility efforts at Microsoft.

In response to a post regarding MS slipping back to dark ages: in this context (the overall thread), both sides (MS and screen reader vendors) are at fault: Microsoft for not communicating things well, and screen reader vendors taking a while to respond. At least NVDA is taking the lead in responding back.

As for what’s going on behind the scenes: NVDA did not respond to UIA notification events. We did have means of tracking it for a while (via an add-on), but it wasn’t until yesterday that we began responding properly (again via an add-on update). For those who know where this is going: yes, NVDA will read UIA notification text starting next week once Windows 10 App Essentials 18.03 is released. But this is just a start: I’m using that ad-on to field test what will eventually be edits to NVDA screen reader source code to let NVDA announce notifications without help from an add-on or two (and I’m working on both of these at the moment). This is the reason why I put “yellow light” for NVDA because work is in progress to let NVDA announce notifications.

Cheers,

Joseph

From what I have read, they lost her. I don't see her name on anything recent when I do a Google search. I'm not completely certain though and, yeah. I hear you. XP still is the best thing Microsoft created.

That's good that it has a loopback feature.

I thank you Joseph for your crucial work and for your engagement in this community. We rely on developers like you when it comes to accessibility.
