Re: New Skype Installation a Complete Disaster!

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I've never had it force an update on windows 7. it always asks to which I say politely no thanks.
I'm not sure how one gets the old version.
However there does seem to have been a long history with Skype mucking it up on every update they do. I hardly ever use it these days personally, but for many years the tendency to hi jack the audio settings and not put them back afterwards seemed rather draconian to me.

I have used NVDA successfully with Skype for many years. Suddenly,
tonight, on my Windows 7 laptop, when I entered Skype, a new version was
forcibly installed, something like Version 8.1.2, and it presented me
with an interface that I could not comprehend with NVDA. None of the
shortcut keys that I previously used would work. I received a call from
a friend right after this forced installation and could not answer it,
because the usual alt-PageUp key combo for answering a call was useless,
as were all other previous shortcut keys. What is the solution to this
problem. I totally uninstalled Skype for now. Do we give up on Skype
as NVDA users, or install a different version or perhaps some other chat
program?

I can create new comments, but I am unable to edit or delete comments.
When I move the cursor to commented text and press the applications key, the menu only shos the option to create a new comment. In Office 2013 I am able to delete or reply to comments. Does this work differently in Office 365, and does it work with NVDA?

Trying to update the add-on from W10 app essentials update notification usually fails for me too. I can't remember the last time it actually worked but as you say, using the check for ADD-ON update feature in the Preferences menu does the job.

Both of those have their own settings, both under preferences I think.
If you go in there and check for updates, they should work. It did for Windows App Essentials anyway. I don't know why the automatic check gives an error but last time that happened to me I just went in and told it to check for updates and it worked.

Can VLC show lyrics stored in MP3 files?

Windows Media Player does it, but you have to configure it and arriving at the area of the player where the lyrics are placed is somewhat difficult.

Hi David.

I do use VLC for my videos and I agree that it’s the best. However, I think the playlist features in Winamp are still more to my liking for audio playback. I also find some of the more complex VLC features a little difficult to use for a screen-reader. Setting the equalizer (especially getting the programme to keep your settings), or synchronising video/audio tracks together, is a bit of a  pain, but certainly doable, although I admit to having resorted to sighted assistance a couple of times.

I love VLC media player!

It is also a music editor, you can play DVD’s, or just play your music. There are many key commands for VLC.

Press spacebar to play and pause,

Shift+right arrow to fast forward and rewind a little bit, and press alt+arrow keys and CTRL+arrow keys to do the same by larger amounts. You can access a lot from the menus. VLC has been my favorite media player for two years now!

Me too, or if anybody wants to gives tips on VLC for audio playback, I

can try that too. Gom Audio is gone, I loaded albums into it, it started

playing, and then pretty much locked up my machine, or at least the

keyboard. Nothing would work, not its context menu, Windows key-x, I

couldn't switch windows, you name it. So I hit the power button to shut

down, rebooted, and uninstalled it. I'm fine setting things up and

customizing, but my patience is like zero right now. If it can't even do

the basic thing it's supposed to, it's gone.

I think it depends on how you think of it.
IE there are always two ways.
if it says plus it could mean you have expanded it or it could mean it can be expanded.

I'm not sure what you mean about untagged graphics though. Often if you reproduce the underlying name of the graphic its a very long and meaningless text string in any case.

Hi all:

I have two suggestions about nvda browse on website.

First, nvda will be lost graphic when the graphic has no any "alt text", example: alt = "" or no alt attribute.
this design let us no method click it (if is can onclick) or make something for this graphic (if download the graphic) because this graphic is gone in nvda's world,
so I hope nvda still show this graphic by "gra" or some signed, tell us graphic has exists.
I think if later nvda can do the mark on the graph, then the graph should be displayed anyway.

Second, the wai-aria attribute "aria-expanded" show condition is put upside down.
if aria-expanded = false, nvda will announce "collapsed" is right but braille display show "+" (plus),
if aria-expanded = true, nvda will announce "expanded" is right but braille display show "-" (minus).
Is not the plus and minus the opposite display?
or I would like to know why the plus sign is collapsed and minus is expanded yet?
Because this thinking seems to be somewhat different from our Asians.

Hi

There is a menu called weather plus.

it can be found under the nvda preferences by pressing the following. Press the nvda key + the letter N, arrow down to preferences then right to general settings then down to weather plus. A sub menu will come off it and look for the one down the bottom called check for upgrade or update. it when pressed on with the enter key will tell you what version you have and what the new one is then it is a matter of gettings it.

I think the wind 10 essentials add on is the same idea.

Hi all. I'm looking for a Winamp replacement, since it keeps crashing,

apparently the amount of music I have is just too much for it. I like

Winamp's minimal interface. I don't have to tab all over the place to

get to things, I don't have to hit weird alt function key combinations,

stuff like that. I loathe iTunes, in case anybody wants to suggest it.

Also, I'm looking for something modern, or at least maintained, so

please don't start telling me about how if you find just the right

website, you can download a version of Windows Media Player from twelve

ears ago that's awesome!

I tried playing with Groove a bit. It works, but there seems to be no

keyboard shortcuts to speak of, at least not that I saw, and it was tab

central through a bunch of stuff I don't really care about. But maybe I

just need to learn it better. I organize my own music, so other than

pointing it at a folder and letting it go on random or shuffle or

whatever, I don't think I need an organizer. I thought of VLC but I'm

not sure if that has enough control or accessibility, though I gather

you can make whatever keyboard shortcuts for it you want, so it's a

possibility.

If anybody's got recommendations, I'd surely appreciate some. I'd keep

using Winamp, but apparently 200 plus GB of music is the point at which

Winamp throws up its hands and runs away to hide in a closet. So I guess

it's time to use something else, which is too bad, because I still dig

VLC is a necessity imo if you play a lot of videos. If you're only in it for the audio, winamp works as well as ever on my Windows 10 setup, except for automatic database retrieval, which is broken because Winamp no longer has a license rather than because of Windows 10. Only thing to do is try it and see. Results always vary on every system, as this thread illustrates.

Hi,

I use foobar2000, it's last stable version is accessible, you can set key commands on the preferences menu (by default many are disabled) it has many plugins to give more functions, for example I use plugins for monkeys audio, an other to cast to chromecast, etc.

I also use VLC, but for music I prefer Foobar2000 wich I feel more accessible.

So the thread here reminded me I wanted to try this out. I’m really interested in getting this one going. Not sure if it’ll replace winamp exactly as I’m quite happy with it, but it’ll be nice to have another audio player that actually works and does everything I want it to. That stuff from Microsoft just will never cut it, and I never did get really used to or happy with using VLC for audio playback (still the only video player for me).

Looking at their site, I notice there are *loads* of extensions  and plug-ins available. So I ask you foobar users – what are those essential add-ons that you use or can recommend?

Also if I remember right from playing with it in my XP days, you assign the keyboard commands by editing ini files. I assume all of you have customised the programme quite extensively. Tell me about this, just so I have a starting point here. What is your setup?

Re: Braille Displays and Multiple Languages/Character Sets

Hello,

Reading in multiple languages depends on the ability of the screen reader to automatically use multiple braille output tables. It doesn‘t matter which braille display you are choosing. As of now, there is the addon braille extender which let you configure 2 output tables to be combined while reading.

This message may be considered off-topic, but there is really nowhere in particular where I can try to engage those who’ve “been there, done that” (or may be there doing that) with this topic.  If the moderator believes this should not be further discussed on the group, then please post with that request.  I am happy to receive input either on the group or via private message or e-mail.

I may soon be taking on some contract work where one of the questions is what braille display would be best suited for use with foreign (non-English) characters both from an input and output perspective.  Since I am sighted and monolingual this particular need is something that’s entirely in the abstract for me.   This is definitely a time where input from those who have already encountered this need and tried things out would be invaluable.

I would also be curious as to whether those who are dealing with multiple languages where non-English-language character sets are being used have found it useful to use a language-specific keyboard.  It certainly makes text entry easier but only if you are able to familiarize yourself with the layout on said keyboard and get as comfortable with it as the keyboard you typically use.  I know that these are available as replacements on laptops so I’d have to presume that the external USB keyboard equivalent is available as well.

Also, if you as a multi-language computer user are willing to be a part of an “e-mail circle” about this please let me know.   This is a time where more input, and possibly conflicting input, is a very good thing provided you can describe how you’ve arrived at your conclusions.  It would be great to be the proverbial "fly on the wall" while those with long experience with this need discuss their experiences with each other.   This may or may not happen, but I thought I'd ask.
