Hi Fernando

I’ve just done this myself and I copied NVDA from an old computer to a new one as follows:

1. Created a portable copy of NVDA on a USB stick from my old computer (NVDA 17.4).
2. Plugged USB stick into new computer and ran portable copy of NVDA
3. Opened NVDA menu, pressed t for Tools, then arrowed down to Install NVDA.. and pressed enter.
4. NVDA began installing after pressing alt Y to UAC prompt

At end of installation, NVDA opens a dialog asking:

Start NVDA after loggin into Windows (this was checked)

Start NVDA on log-in screen (this was checked)

Copy profile to installed copy (not checked)

I check to ‘Copy profile’ box and pressed enter on OK button. It created NVDA exactly as it was on my old computer, including synthesizers, ad-ons etc. As far as I’m aware, the only thing it did not replicate from my old computer was I had copied my NVDA profile to the Windows system and this it could not do as it is an admin function, so it just uses the default when voicing the log-in screen.

Cheers

Chris

What about backups or updates? I find many back up programs create this freezing then working again issue. I don't quite know if its just processor overload or what. I luckily cannot use a mouse but before you start looking for mouse specific issues, see if the rest of windows also slows down first.

Folks

I share my laptop with a sighted family member.

The synaptic pad mouse frequently freezes. This occurs intermittently,
without an obvious pattern.

This happens with NVDA and with JAWS, on both my win7 and win10 laptops.

I have ruled out a mechanical fault, and malware. This could be a
mouse driver or a registry key issue, but haven't explored these areas
further.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks, Paul

Re: Trying to install NVDA from a portable copy on new Windows 10 computer but can't focus on the NVDA menu

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I simply installed it over the top, but I first installed it clean. I have no idea why it works better than simply running the portable copy on a machine, then doing an install. It just does for me.
Of course some people who have older machines might get an issue if they use 2017.4 and want it to run on XP, Vista or a Windows 7 machine without sop1!
Those combinations will not work so those buzzing around with a portable version who might encounter any of those machines should use 2017.3 as a separate version on the stick.

Re: My mouse keeps freezing

This could definitely be secondary to an out-of-date driver, particularly on the Win10 machine.

Visit the support page for your respective machines at their manufacturers' websites and get the latest driver available for the respective OS you're using.  If there isn't one specifically for Windows 10 then I'd try whatever the latest version was for either Win7 or, more likely, Win 8.1.

Dear NVDA community,

A few weeks ago I asked on the NVDA users list if I should record an
updated
version of the popular "Welcome to NVDA" tutorial series, and everyone
said
"yes". Thus, I'm happy to announce that production of 2018 edition of this
tutorial series is under way. Due to a completely new synthesizer to be
used, coupled with use of Microsoft Edge for various web browsing
examples,
I'm recording most sections anew. I'm also redoing most recordings to make
the sound quality consistent throughout the tutorial set, as the 2013 and
2015 editions had varying audio quality.

Changes in the 2018 edition (part 1 is completed and waiting to be
assembled
soon):

* Overall: use of Windows oneCore synthesizer. Due to popular request,
each topic will be an mp3 file of its own.
* Introduction (part 1): the new checkbox that offers to start the
portable copy when created is covered, along with restart with debug
logging
option. Due to time constraints, new command line options are not covered
(they'll be covered in an addendum).
* Basics (part 2): the newly expanded welcome dialog will be covered.
Apart from that, there's nothing new in 2018 edition.
* Objects (part 3): stays the same except for new speech synthesizer.
* Web browsing (part 4): most examples will use Firefox and Edge, with
one or two requiring use of Internet Explorer. A new section on MathML
reading will be covered.
* Apps (part 5): Some replacements and new apps. In Microsoft Word
section, I'll briefly demonstrate braille input support.
* Configuration (parts 6 and 7): Windows 10 OCR will be mentioned but
will not be covered, and a host of changes will be done thanks to new and
revised options in NVDA.
* Tools (part 8): Windows 10 OCR will be covered last.
* Add-ons (part 9): instead of OCR add-on, Golden Cursor will be
covered. Also, how to disable individual add-ons will be shown.
* Possible addenda: command-line switches, NVDA on Windows 10 on ARM.

For the most part, content should be identical to the 2015 edition. The
current edition of the tutorial set can be found at:

http://www.josephsl.net/tutorials

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

thanks, the only problem I have found when using this and you have it at 100% using short cut keys such as the nvda short cut key do not work. the only work around is to unload it do the short cut then load it back up again but it does work. my sighted daughter last night said she could see a little sort of outline of something on screen but she could not read anything on screen, this was her practically right up against the screen so it does what it does for me. I don't have it on all the time but some times I get sore eyes from the screen light. thanks again for this little utility.

Subject: [nvda] Welcome to NVDA 2018: production under way

Dear NVDA community,

A few weeks ago I asked on the NVDA users list if I should record an updated
version of the popular "Welcome to NVDA" tutorial series, and everyone said
"yes". Thus, I'm happy to announce that production of 2018 edition of this
tutorial series is under way. Due to a completely new synthesizer to be
used, coupled with use of Microsoft Edge for various web browsing examples,
I'm recording most sections anew. I'm also redoing most recordings to make
the sound quality consistent throughout the tutorial set, as the 2013 and
2015 editions had varying audio quality.

Changes in the 2018 edition (part 1 is completed and waiting to be assembled
soon):

* Overall: use of Windows oneCore synthesizer. Due to popular request,
each topic will be an mp3 file of its own.
* Introduction (part 1): the new checkbox that offers to start the
portable copy when created is covered, along with restart with debug logging

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Yahoo is fine as long as you turn on the pop3 part and use it through a client. That is of course not counting the number of privacy hacks they have had and the fact they now belong to aol.

Yeah been there done that.

I had a system that I took to the shop to get fixed.

There was some hardware issue and they fixed that easy enough.

Took it home, had to reformat because it didn't really do much after I turned it on.

I was angry, could have got cross but I didn't I couldn't care.

A good reformat and it was working but I was still angry at the tech.

I understand the privacy argument, but that's only going to be useful for
laptops and tablets. With a desktop, you can leave the monitor off and still
use the computer.
As a previous user stated, it really depends what NVDA's game plan is.
If they're trying to compete with the other screen readers, then they'll
need to add screen shading.
If they do incorporate it into the main screen reader, I'd suggest adding a
bunch of other new and useful features along with it.

Re: competition

Well to be honest being a jaws and old hal user for a while I was always taught that all the screen needed to be intercepted by a special driver.

That the system was not accessible other wise.

With nvda in its natural state and this was back with build 400 or so, it amazed how much was actually available to me, even on xp.

Desktop access, the net, most programs, basically everything jaws can do.

There are a few things nvda could do before jaws.

Being written in a scripting language, you had sub programs to run of this and they could be compiled programs in their own right or scripts.

You could also control the reader with a library.

And while some games and a few other programs need jaws or something, technology has changed a lot.

99.9% of all programs are fully web based or at least has a web component.

Most readers I have used are still ms web browser dependant The others caught on, but only windoweyes got close to our model with programs just for the system.

Jaws does this to now but any large module, ie leasy, you need to pay the price of a digital recorder or my ocr package.

One thing which stands out for nvda is that like linux it was written with the web in mind, not an old outdated os called windows 95 or 98 and then get added on to.

Before then I had used python for games, but that was it.

This actually shows how powerfull python can be as a language and its not even a full one like c its just a script.

Its easy to learn and as far as I know nvda is quite stable compared to some programs.

I always have a dream from time to time that nvda is its own os maybe android, or linux or something like that.

Ofcause it uses keyboard, touch and is voice recognition heavy.

It can do everything it can and more.

Especially when windows gets stressfull, I want to return to the old days where the blind had their own devices for their own things.

I still would like a blindy device for things like mail, and web, and maybe some media playback though my issue is not media as such.

I'd like an easy way to choose the interface of the os without changing the os.

So I'd like to switch interfaces.

a win7 interface, xp, etc, etc without any issues switching to either.

Similar to virtual desktops.

And the ability to use it for different things.

Windows xp for media and a few other things, something modern and safe for the net, and something else for something else.

Sadly no one has thought about this.

I know I can build mods in but if it was part of the system well.

I'm actually up for competition. It will make each product better and better as time goes by.. I didn't want to use nvda in 2006 or 2007 when it came out as jaws at the time was the best. Now I won't touch jaws with a 10 foot pole. I tried to make my work switch but their excuse was that nvda was not meant for the word place and they would not consider it.

Take care

Karim,

They are not included because Add-ons, as the name suggests, are optional. Integrating them into the installer would mean that the installer filesize would be inflated, resulting in a much bigger download for everyone.

A lot of NVDA users won't ever know enough to know that there are add ons nor how to install them. You are free to remove any add ons you don't want and, for experienced users who understand the implications, a no add ons NVDA can be offered if it really matters, which I don't think it does. I'm not talking about including add on after add on in NVDA. I'm saying that some add ons should be included because you aren't serving a lot of blind people well by not doing so, meaning the large number, who will never use add ons they have to download and install. Instead of spending time and resources reinventing the wheel just to make it a part of core NVDA code, just include the add on.

NVDA doesn't have to adopt every popular feature of other screen-readers to compete. I don't have much opinion about whether this feature is implemented in NVDA directly or by an add on. It is a peripheral feature and not an actual screen-reader feature. It is a proper question whether NVDA development time and resources should be put into this project. And an add on wouldn't divert NVDA time and resources. However, when it comes to add ons, NVDA should do what Window-eyes used to do, not because Window-eyes does it, but because it serves users well, is logical and there is no reason of any substance not to do it.

Window-eyes used to accomplish a number of functions by having a number of what it pretentiously called apps, they were really scripts, but they were available to users as add ons and were shipped with Window-eyes and were set to run at the time of installation. Many users of whatever screen-reader they use will never learn enough to know anything about add ons. there are a number of add ons that should be incorporated into NVDA as addons that are downloaded and are running when NVDA is run.

If this were done, the major objection against making a feature an add on would be done away with. the objection is that a lot of people will never know about add ons and never use whatever is being discussed. If this objection were done away with by having many add ons be included in NVDA as running add ons at the time of download and installation or portable use, the whole question and argument about whether something should be an add on could be done away with.
