Re: nvda or JAWSnot using the default sound card
Gene
Any time you connect a USB sound card, it is the default. there is no reason to do this for playback settings. In terms of recording settings, you set a specific source as the default, not the entire sound card. for example, in the list of recording devices, you may see something under the external sound card like, line-in. If you want that to be the default, you would set that as the default.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
The question is, how do you get JAWS and NVDA to reliably play through the sound card you want. there are settings in the screen-readers themselves that direct the audio to the sound card you want. Gene

Press the windows key plus R to open the run dialogue. Enter the following into the text field without the quotes. “control /name microsoft.sound” Press enter or tab to the OK button and click on it. At this point, the windows sound properties dialog should open. In the sound properties dialogue, on the playback tab, which should be the tab selected by default, ensure that your external sound card output is set as the default. To do that, use your arrow keys to select it from the list, or have someone with eyesight click on it to select it. Then, right click on it, and choose set as default. Right click on it again, and this time click on set as default communication device. If none of those options show up in the menu after you right click, then the sound card is already set as default. I hope that these steps will help you. You can also set the default on the recording tab in the same way. This should help ensure that your system always sends audio to the external sound card. So do any of you wizards have an idea what to do? This is a Windows ten computer with 12 gb of ram, a SSD one terabyte storage drive and an extra one for storage. -- Laughingthunder

'synthesizer & press the 'change' button. At this point, you can set a default card for NVDA.

nvda or JAWSnot using the default sound card

Greetings all, I have encountered a never before experienced audio issue. I bought a Lenovo computer with Windows ten home on it to use only for audio editing. Where a given product lands depends on exactly how the given organization tests, but you will see clear trends regarding what security suites are best, and have been best for some time. Windows Defender has been a top-shelf product, being in the top ten results consistently, since its major rework under Windows 8, and that has been carried over in to Windows 10. Look at the most recent testing results from the following antivirus/security testing labs, along with the historical results from the past several years if you want to see how Windows Security/Defender has been performing. Windows Security has been solidly in the top 10, often top 5, and frequently beats out several well-known competitors that one must pay for. At this point, I'm requesting that this topic be brought rapidly to a close, though I'm not locking it. Re: office 2019 word and nvda
Well this issue happens on an exit command from word 2019.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
It doesn't happen on 2016. Word exits, it maybe taking time to do so though powering narator at the point word exits shows it has in deed exited to desktop. In 10 seconds or so word will complete exiting to desktop as far as nvda gives a damn. However at that point nvda will not read anything right like search boxes till I restart it. Luckily running nvda again will restart it. I have yet to try it on the rc but assuming it is going on the rc its almost like nvda is waiting for catch up.

I tried sophos home but because of those false positives, the program went through my drive and other things and deleted everything that was bad.

As you can imagine, I had a nice long load of errors, reinstalling several programs, a reformat so windows would stop saying errors at me, etc. I have come to the conclusion that security software doesn't like any disabled people or at least not blind gamers like myself. I like windows defender because I can control it without losing to much and if I do its easy to fix.

Yeah, there is an article on a blog I am on on this.

We have windows defender. That aparently is actually quite crappy now but with so many false positives who knows now days. Someone says that kaspersky cloud is supposed to be good. However I have so many games, and files which are false alarms even to malwarebytes, most of them bgt games, then the virtual recorder program and a few other actual programs, that I have lived with a lot of my drives excluded, my data drive is completely excluded, my backup drives are also excluded. In fact all drive letters through to h are excluded from scanning, so are a lot of folders in program files. Anything which is blindness related is excluded. The only things the checker notices are windows itself and my user account and downloads, I have even excluded all my cloud locations because if there is a virus, the cloud system like dropbox becomes nicely stuck.

Re: McAfee Antivirus does not work with NVDA
David Goldfield
To Gene's point I can tell you that Kaspersky Antivirus, while its accessibility is far from ideal, works much better with NVDA than it does with JAWS. With JAWS I need to use the touch cursor to review the screen, which is similar to NVDA's object navigation. With NVDA navigating with the tab key does at least provide some feedback although there are instances where using object navigation is needed.

It depends. Years ago, Avast wasn't accessible with screen-readers. In order to allow information to reach JAWS from Avast, the developers explicitly told Avast to let JAWS see the information. Without that explicit exception, allowing information to reach the screen-reader was stopped by the self defense system of NVDA.

Hi all,

Based on the log posted by Luke, it appears NVDA is trying to obtain information from a control that no longer exists (according to accessibility API's) or something is grabbing NVDA's attention too long. Technical: I think there is a thread deadlock somewhere. The log fragment in question (see the GitHub issue Luke created) mostly points to threads trying to wait for something from its processing queue. This is evidenced by the fact that multiple threads are waiting for a response from a "dead" UIA element in regards to supported properties. Cheers, Joseph
